The Anxiety-Depression According to Children's Ordinary Stress : Focused on Exploring the Mediation Variable (학령기 아동의 일상적 스트레스에 따른 불안우울 : 분노조절능력과 부정적 자아개념의 중재효과를 중심으로)

  • This study examined to find out mediating variable between ordinary stress and anxiety-depression. The subjects were 2,844 4th grade elementary school in Korea. The instruments used were questionnaires about anxiety-depression, ordinary stress, anger control ability and negative self-concept. Data were analyzed by t-test and regression. Major findings were as follows: (1) There were significant difference in parent-, appearance-, possession-related stress, anger control ability, negative self-concept and anxiety-depression according to sex. (2) Parent-, schoolwork-, peer-, appearance-related stress and anger control ability had a significant effect on the anxiety-depression. The principal finding was that anger control ability had mediating role between ordinary stress(schoolwork-, peer-, appearance-related stress) and anxiety-depression in male, one side parent-related stress and anxiety-depression in female. (3) Parent-, schoolwork-, peer-, appearance-related stress and negative self-concept had a significant effect on the anxiety-depression. The principal finding was that negative self-concept had mediating role between ordinary stress(parent-, schoolwork-, peer-, appearance-, possession-related stress) and anxiety-depression in male, one side parent-, peer-related stress and anxiety-depression in female.

The Effects of Adolescents' School Adjustment on Depression in Their Transitional Period : The Moderating Effects of Parental Support, Parental Monitoring, and Peer Support (전환기 청소년의 학교적응이 우울에 미치는 영향 : 부모지지, 부모감독, 친구지지의 중재효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of adolescents' school adjustment on depression in their transitional period and to find the moderating effects of parental support, parental monitoring, and peer support on the relationship between school adjustment and depression. The participants were 550 first graders in three middle schools in Incheon Metropolitan City and Kyung-gi Province. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, adolescents' school adjustment had significant effects on depression. The lower the level of school adjustment was, the higher the level of depression was. Second, parental support, parental monitoring, and peer support had moderating effects on the relationship between school adjustment and depression. Parental support decreased the depression of adolescents who were at a lower level of adjustment to peer relationship or school class. Parental monitoring decreased the depression of adolescents who were at a lower level of adjustment to school adjustment. On the contrary, parental monitoring increased the depression of adolescents who were at a higher level of adjustment to school adjustment. Peer support decreased the depression of adolescents who were at a lower level of adjustment to school class.

  • Depression is one of the most important psychiatric disorders worldwide. Most depression-related data mining and machine learning studies have been conducted to predict the presence of depression or to derive individual risk factors. However, since depression is caused by a combination of various factors, it is necessary to identify the complex relationship between the factors in order to establish effective anti-depression and management measures. In this study, we propose a methodology for identifying and interpreting patterns of depression expressions using the method of deriving random forest rules, where the random forest rule consists of the condition for the manifestation of the depressive pattern and the prediction result of depression when the condition is met. The analysis was carried out by subdividing into 4 groups in consideration of the different depressive patterns according to gender and age. Depression rules derived by the proposed methodology were validated by comparing them with the results of previous studies. Also, through the AUC comparison test, the depression diagnosis performance of the derived rules was evaluated, and it was not different from the performance of the existing PHQ-9 summing method. The significance of this study can be found in that it enabled the interpretation of the complex relationship between depressive factors beyond the existing studies that focused on prediction and deduction of major factors.

Stress, Depression, Coping Styles and Satisfaction of Clinical Practice in Nursing Students (일 간호대학생의 스트레스, 우울, 대처방법과 임상실습 만족도)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among stress, depression, coping styles and satisfaction of clinical practice in nursing students. Method: Two hundred fifty-eight nursing college students in 1 city were selected by convenient sample. A questionnaire measured the level of stress, depression, coping styles and satisfaction of clinical practice. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Result: The mean score of stress was 2.82 (${\pm}.39$), depression was 19.23 (${\pm}7.70$), coping styles was 2.42 (${\pm}.42$), and satisfaction of clinical practice was 2.81 (${\pm}.41$). There were significant differences on four variables according to the satisfaction of a nursing major. Stress had a significant positive correlation with depression, and a negative correlation with problem focused coping and satisfaction of clinical practice. Depression had a significant negative correlation with satisfaction of clinical practice. Emotional focused coping had a significant positive correlation with depression, and problem focused coping had a significant negative correlation with depression. Conclusion: From the studies reviewed, one can expect a positive effect on decreasing stress and depression among nursing students when the nursing educators use counseling and instruction for clinical practice.

The Effects of Acculturative Stress and Resilience on Depression of University Students from North Ko (탈북 대학생의 문화적응 스트레스와 레질리언스가 우울증상에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effects of acculturative stress and resilience on the depression of university students from North Korea, and examined the moderating effect of resilience on the relation between acculturative stress and depression. The participants of this study were 116 university students from North Korea (53 males and 63 females) aged between 20 and 35 years. The participants were asked to respond either to a written questionnaire or to an online survey system designed to measure research variables. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and a hierarchical regression. The moderating effect of resilience was examined by means of a hierarchical regression. The major findings were as follows: first, an increase in the level of acculturative stress increased that of depression, whereas an increase in the level of resilience decreased that of depression. Second, the moderating effect of resilience on the relation between acculturative stress and depression was statistically significant. That is, the negative influence of acculturative stress on depression was greater when the level of resilience was low, compared to when it was high. In summary, both acculturative stress and resilience had significant effects on the depression of university students from North Korea. Moreover, resilience buffered the detrimental effect of acculturative stress on their depression.

Factors Predicting Depression in Hemodialysis Patients (혈액투석 환자의 우울 예측 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was done to provide fundamental data for developing a depression prediction model by discovering main factors that affect depression in patients who do maintenance hemodialysis. Method: The subjects were 191 patients doing maintenance hemodialysis selected from outpatient dialysis clinics at 9 major general hospitals, The Instrument tools utilized in this study were adapted from depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, stress, adaptation, symptoms, daily activities, and role limitation and thoroughly modified to verify reliability and validity. The collected data was analyzed with a SPSS-PC 11.0 Window Statistics Program for real numbers, percentage, average, standard deviation, and multiple regression. Results: The correlation factor for depression was (M=2.54) fatigue(M=3.12), sleep disturbance (M=2.82), stress(M=3.04), adaptation(M=2.53), daily activities(M=2.24), symptoms(M=2.37), and role limitation(M=2.24). The strongest factor that affected depression was explained by symptoms of the patients who performed hemodialysis. The analysis of the factors that affected depression revealed a $58.4\%$ prediction in symptoms, stress, role limitation, and adaptation. Conclusion: It has been confirmed that the regression equation model(Depression=7.351 + .266$^{\ast}$symptoms + .260$^{\ast}$stress -.l89$^{\ast}$adaptation + .057$^{\ast}$fatigue) of this research may serve as a prediction factor for depression in Hemodialysis Patients.

The Stress Perception, Depressive Symptoms and Medical Comorbidity in Healthcare Center (대학병원 건강검진센터 내원자의 스트레스 지각 정도, 우울 증상 및 신체질환 이환율)

  • Objectives : We surveyed this study for knowing the relation within stress, depression and medical comorbidities, and finding the risk factors of major depression. Methods : 1764 subjects were enrolled from Jan. 2009 to Dec. 2009 who visit Korea University Guro hospital healthcare center. The subjects answered the questionnaire of PSS(Perceived Stress Scale), PHQ-9(Patient Health Questionnaire-9) and the demographic data. We categorized them as the stress group, depressive group, medical comorbidity group and analyzed the correlation analyses and logistic regression analyses. Results : 198 of 1764 subjects(11.8%) were applied to major depression, and the depressive group showed the higher mean stress score(23.19) and mean depression score(12.95) than the normal group. The total PHQ-9 score was increased by perceiving more stress, having more medical comorbidities. The subjects with female, visiting due to recent health problems, irregular exercise, current smoking, history of angina and cerebrovascular disease showed the increased risk of major depression. Conclusions : In this study, we find the PSS, PHQ-9 were valuable for mental health screening in healthcare center. As perceiving more stress and having more medical comorbidity, risk of major depression were increased. Accordingly the individuals with medical diseases or unhealthy lifestyle would need the mental health screen.

Can Obesity Cause Depression? A Pseudo-panel Analysis

  • Objectives: The US ranks ninth in obesity in the world, and approximately 7% of US adults experience major depressive disorder. Social isolation due to the stigma attached to obesity might trigger depression. Methods: This paper examined the impact of obesity on depression. To overcome the endogeneity problem, we constructed pseudopanel data using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 1997 to 2008. Results: The results were robust, and body mass index (BMI) was found to have a positive effect on depression days and the percentage of depressed individuals in the population. Conclusions: We attempted to overcome the endogeneity problem by using a pseudo-panel approach and found that increases in the BMI increased depression days (or being depressed) to a statistically significant extent, with a large effect size.

The Effects of Depression and Stress on College Life Adjustment of Ophthalmic Optics Students

  • This study is intended to look into the effects of depression and stress on college life adjustment of ophthalmic optics students. To achieve this, a survey was empirically carried out to 142 male and female students majoring in ophthalmic optics at colleges in Gangwon-do. The findings are as follows: Depression had a significant effect on academic adjustment and social adjustment, but no significant effect on emotional adjustment and college satisfaction. Stress also had a significant effect on academic adjustment, but no significant effect on social adjustment, emotional adjustment and college satisfaction. The above results showed that depression and stress were major factors affecting academic and social adjustments, and academic adjustment, respectively. Which means that depression restricted the activities of academic adjustment and social adjustment, and did not have a close relationship with psychological mechanisms - emotional adjustment and college life satisfaction. Stress also had a significant effect on academic adjustment, but did not have a direct relationship with social adjustment, emotional adjustment and college satisfaction.

Perceptions of Parenting, Peer Relationship and Depression of Adolescents from Divorced and Non-divorced Family (부모의 이혼여부에 따른 청소년의 우울지각 : 청소년이 지각한 부모의 양육태도와 교우관계를 중심으로)

  • This study was to investigate differences in depression, parenting, and peer relationship perceived by adolescents from divorced and non-divorced families. Also, aim that identifies variables which have influences on adolescents' depression. The subjects were 356 middle and high school students who live in Seoul and Incheon. All respondents answered by self-report questionnaire. Data were analyzed by t-test and hierarchical regression. The major findings were as follows. First, adolescents from divorced families perceived more depression than those from non-divorced families. Second, adolescents from divorced families perceived parenting attitude less warm than those from non-divorced families. Third, adolescents from divorced families perceived themselves more isolated and less understood in their peer relationships than those from non-divorced families did. Finally, adolescents from divorced families who feel less isolated and perceive parenting attitude more warm and less maturity-demanding perceived less depression.
