An Analysis of Causes of Marine Incidents at sea Using Big Data Technique (빅데이터 기법을 활용한 항해 중 준해양사고 발생원인 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Various studies have been conducted to reduce marine accidents. However, research on marine incidents is only marginal. There are many reports of marine incidents, but the main content of existing studies has been qualitative, which makes quantitative analysis difficult. However, quantitative analysis of marine accidents is necessary to reduce marine incidents. The purpose of this paper is to analyze marine incident data quantitatively by applying big data techniques to predict marine incident trends and reduce marine accident. To accomplish this, about 10,000 marine incident reports were prepared in a unified format through pre-processing. Using this preprocessed data, we first derived major keywords for the Marine incidents at sea using text mining techniques. Secondly, time series and cluster analysis were applied to major keywords. Trends for possible marine incidents were predicted. The results confirmed that it is possible to use quantified data and statistical analysis to address this topic. Also, we have confirmed that it is possible to provide information on preventive measures by grasping objective tendencies for marine incidents that may occur in the future through big data techniques.

Effects of Urban Freeway Incidents on Traffic Congestion (도시고속도로 유고가 교통혼잡에 미치는 영향)

  • Nonrecurring congestions are generally caused by random or less predictable events, such as accidents, spilled loads stalled or broken-down vehicles that, temporarily reduce the capacity of the freeway. The purpose of this paper is to present the effect of incidents on the traffic congestion on the urban freeway by simulation method. The simulation scenario is composed of two level traffic conditions, two level incident severities, and eight level incident durations. After incident, the recovering duration to the normal traffic flow, increased by linear of incident duration. Total vehicles travel time increased and average travel speed decreased by squares curve of incident duration. Considering incident impacts, incident management system is evaluated the major function of the urban freeway traffic management system. Also, necessary the related research to detect, verify, and develop effective response strategies for traffic incidents.

  • To find the pattern of personal data leak incidents and confirm which distribution is suitable for, this paper searched the personal data leak incidents reported by the media from 2011 to 2014. Based on result, this research estimated the statistical distribution using the 'K-S Statistics' and tested the 'Goodness-of-Fit'. As a result, the fact that in 95% significance level, the Poisson & Exponential distribution have high 'Goodness-of-Fit' has been proven quantitatively and, this could find it for major personal data leak incidents to occur 12 times in a year on average. This study can be useful for organizations to predict a loss of personal data leak incidents and information security investments and furthermore, this study can be a data for requirements of the cyber-insurance.

An Investigation of Elementary School Teachers' Epistemological Beliefs about Science on the Bases of Their Strategies for Coping with Critical Incidents (위기 상황에의 대처 전략을 통한 초등교사들의 과학에 대한 인식론적 신념 연구)

  • In this study, we examined the types and the characteristics of elementary school teachers' strategies for coping with critical incidents in science classes. Teachers' epistemological beliefs about science were then investigated on the bases of the types of their coping strategies. The teachers (N=107) in 23 elementary schools were asked to respond to an open-ended question about the critical incidents they had experienced in science classes and how to cope with them. Seven types of coping strategies were identified as follows: avoiding, reinterpretation, adjusting, prevaricating, justifying, exploring, and explaining. Among them, adjusting and justifying were the major strategies. In order to classify teachers' epistemological beliefs about science, their coping strategies were grouped into four categories such as transferring facts, constructing facts, transferring meanings, and constructing meanings. The results indicated that most teachers still possessed traditional epistemological beliefs about science. The potential of critical incidents as a probe for revealing teachers' epistemological beliefs about science is discussed.

  • The railway system is worldwide recognized as a safe mean of transportation. However, railroad accidents and incidents continue to occur. Due to the nature of the railway system that consist of many mechanical parties, it is apparently difficult to eliminate probability of accidents and incidents completely. Therefore, through the analysis of railroad accidents and incidents, it is very important to trace the various factors affecting the accidents and incidents. In this study, we performed the analysis of rail-road accidents due to track defects in foreign countries; United States of America, England, Canada, Australia. As a result of its investigation of the accidents, major risk factors are proposed in this study.

  • Recent massive data breaches or major security incidents show that threats posed by insiders have greatly increased over time. Especially, authorized insiders can cause more serious problems than external hackers can. Therefore there is a growing need to introduce a system that can monitor the insider threats in real time and prevent data breaches or security incidents in early-stage. In this paper, we propose a EITMS(Enterprise Insider-Threats Management System). EITMS detects the abnormal behaviors of authorized insiders based on the normal patterns made from their roles, duties and private activities. And, in order to prevent breaches and incidents in early-stage, a scoring system that can visualize the insider threats is also included.

  • Larger and more sophisticated building construction requires more input resources such as worker, materials and devices. Growing resource volume brings risks at a construction site. The industry makes an effort to protect probable incidents at the site by organizing a safety management team. conducting a safety instruction and etc, but losses especially in the construction are higher than other industries. Major reason is that the safety management program is conducted only at the step of construction work and a root cause is not eliminated. Conventionally a concerned party shifts the blame to other parties such as constructor and site workers who are direct participants in the construction site. However, the whole causes of incidents go to the all subject of the construction not only the constructor but the client, designer and others related in the construction, and especially the clients are heavily involved in general concerns of the project. Therefore, this study is defined the role of the clients in nations and domestic condition of construction safety management is investigated. And it is analyzed surveys to prevent incidents at construction sites, and suggested the role of the clients which is classified pre and post construction, and in the middle of construction, and also categorized planning and design & construction schedule especially for the pre-construction level.

  • Despite the high efficiency of nuclear power plant, people in Korea do not give approvals and supports the facilities because the risk of the accidents and incidents. In particular, the low level of safety culture is a crucial mechanism that damages the robustness of the NPP. By considering the various definitions of safety culture and analyzing the major reasons of incidents, the conceptual safety culture model is made by using Causal Loop Diagramming. For sustaining development of nuclear power, social supports, incentives and organizational learning are needed. It also requires the coordination of work schedules and the expansion of human resource for protecting the rules and procedures in NPP. Decommissioning aging nuclear power plants will prevent a serious accident. In order to promote the safety culture, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Corporation should disclose more information to the public and promote the internal and external communications.

  • As recent construction projects aim to build higher and bigger buildings, lifting operation is getting increasingly important in construction sites. Accordingly, as tower cranes get higher and higher, disasters involving tower cranes are also on the rise. According to occupational incident statistics of the Korea Occupational Health & Safety Agency (KOHSA), most of such incidents occur in installation, dismantling and climbing phases of tower crane. Therefore, it is essential to develop preventative measures to secure safety of tower crane operations, with critical focus on installation, dismantling and climbing of tower crane. Hence, this research attempts to measure criticality of key risk factors in installation, dismantling and climbing phases of tower crane on construction site and propose necessary safety measures. As a result, conclusions herein will contribute to minimize disasters and incidents involving tower cranes in high-rise building construction sites.

  • Railway accidents/incidents occur because of many reasons. Human error by the railway staff or personnel takes a major part of those reasons. In order to reduce and prevent railway accidents/incidents, appropriate measures should be developed to remove root causes induced in human error. A systematic study for analysing causes of human errors and for developing an effective management is necessary. Detailed analysis of the railway traffic signaller's tasks should be preferentially performed for this purpose. This paper introduces the results of analysis for the types and characteristics of the railway traffic signaller's tasks. As a result of the analysis, the railway traffic signaller's tasks can be decomposed into 24 tasks in total, and also be divided into the general task and the emergency task. The railway traffic signaller's tasks are characterized to require continual confirmation and observation activities, and sometimes immediate decision and action.
