This paper presents the development of thin and lightweight ultra-high temperature radar-absorbing ceramic composites composed of an aluminosilicate ceramic matrix-based geopolymer reinforced ceramic fiber and sendust magnetic nanoparticles in X-band frequency range (8.2~12.4 GHz). The dielectric properties with regard to complex permittivity of ceramic/sendust-aluminosilicate composites were proportional to the size of sendust magnetic nanoparticle with high magnetic characteristic properties as flake shape and its concentrations in the target frequency range. The characteristic microstructures, element composition, phase identification, and thermal stability were examined by SEM, EDS, VSM and TGA, respectively. The fabricated total thicknesses of the proposed single slab ultra-high temperature radar absorber correspond to 1.585 mm, respectively, exhibiting their excellent EM absorption performance. The behavior of ultra-high temperature EM wave absorption properties was verified to the developed free-space measurement system linked with high temperature furnace for X-band from 25℃ to 1,000℃.
The magnetoelectric (ME) characteristics for Terfenol-D/PZT laminate composite dependence on bias magnetic field is investigated. At low frequency, ME response is determined by the piezomagnetic coefficient $d_{33,m}$ and the elastic compliance $s_{33}^H$ of magnetostrictive material, $d_{33,m}$ and $s_{33}^H$ for Terfenol-D are inherently nonlinear and dependent on $H_{dc}$, leading to the influence of $H_{dc}$ on low-frequency ME voltage coefficient. At resonance, the mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ dependences on $H_{dc}$ results in the differences between the low-frequency and resonant ME voltage coefficient with $H_{dc}$. In terms of ${\Delta}E$ effect, the resonant frequency shift is derived with respect to the bias magnetic field. Considering the nonlinear effect of magnetostrictive material and $Q_m$ dependence on $H_{dc}$c, it predicts the low-frequency and resonant ME voltage coefficients as a function of the dc bias magnetic field. A good agreement between the theoretical results and experimental data is obtained and it is found that ME characteristics dependence on $H_{dc}$ are mainly influenced by the nonlinear effect of magnetostrictive material.
In order to design light weight and high efficient electromagnetic wave absorbing materials, hollow magnetic particles have been introduced in this study. The electroless plating method has been utilized to coat Ni and Fe on the substrates of synthesized polystyrene particles of submicron size. Removing polystyrene particles by heat treatment resulted in hollow structures. Observation by SEM, TEM and EDS confirmed the surface morphology and coating thickness of Ni and Fe. Polymeric composites containing hollow particles were tested in order to compare the electromagnetic properties between Ni coated and Fe costed particles. The composite of 30 wt% Fe hollow particles showed the higher complex permeability than Ni hollow particles or the conventional barium ferrite particles.

An orthotropic magneto-rheological rubber composite (MRRC) based on a general-purpose rubber can be manufactured by using an electromagnetic device during the curing processes of rubber mixtures. The magnetic transmissivity of MRRCs increases with the iron particle (IP) content, and that of aligned MRRCs with a 2-T magnetic field is 1.8 to 2 times higher as compared to that of randomly dispersed MRRCs. The effect of a 2-T magnetic field on carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced MRRC has been identified clearly, and the magnetic transmissivity is found to be 3.7%. The compressive stress of MRRC (IP 90 + CNT 5, 2 T alignment) under a magnetic field of 0.49 T is 2.1 times higher as compared to that of the matrix. The MR effect of MRRC increases with the IP content, and that of aligned MRRC with the IP 90 and 2 T magnetic field is 20.4%. It is confirmed that the magnetic field when making the specimen and when performing the compression test greatly impacts the compression characteristics.
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based nanocomposites are fabricated by incorporation of boron nitride (BN) nanosheets with anisotropic orientation for a potential high thermal conducting ferroelectric materials. The PVDF is dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF) and homogeneously mixed with exfoliated BN nanosheets, which is then cast into a polyimide film under application of high magnetic fields (0.45~10 T), where the direction of the filler alignment was controlled. The BN nanosheets are exfoliated by a mixed way of solvothermal method and ultrasonication prior to incorporation into the PVDF-based polymer suspension. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and thermal diffusivity are measured for the characterization of the polymer nanocomposites. Analysis shows that BN nanosheets are exfoliated into the fewer layers, whose basal planes are oriented either perpendicular or parallel to the composite surfaces without necessitating the surface modification induced by high magnetic fields. Moreover, the nanocomposites show a dramatic thermal diffusivity enhancement of 1056% by BN nanosheets with perpendicular orientation in comparison with the pristine PVDF at 10 vol % of BN, which relies on the degree of filler orientation. The mechanism for the magnetic field-induced orientation of BN and enhancement of thermal property of PVDF-based composites by the BN assembly are elucidated.
High performance magnetic materials are characterized by the combination of outstanding magnetic properties and optimized microstructures, e.g., nanocrystalline composites of multilayers and small particle systems. The characteristic parameters of the hysteresis loops of these materials vary over more than a factor of $10^{6}$ with optimum values for the coercive field of several Tesla and permeabilities of $10^{6}$. Within the framework of the computational micromagnetism (nanomagnetism) using the finite element method the upper and lower bounds of the coercive field of different types of grain ensembles and multilayers have been determined. For the case of nanocrystalline composites the role of grain size, exchange and dipolar coupling between grains and the degree of grain alignment will be discusses in detail. It is shown that the largest coercivities are obtained for exchange decoupled grains, whereas remanence enhancing requires exchange coupled grains below 20 nm. For composite permanent magnets based on $Nd_{2}Fe_{14}B$ with an amount of ~ 50% soft $\alpha$-Fe-phase coercivities of ${\mu}_{0}H_{c}=0.75\;T$, a remanence of 1.5 T and an energy product of $400\;kJ/m^{3}$ is expected. In nanocrystalline systems the temperature dependence of the coercivity is well described by the relation ${\mu}_{0}H_{c}=(2\;K_{1}/M_{s}){\alpha}-N_{eff}{\mu}_{0}M_{s}$, where the microstructural parameters $\alpha$ and $N_{eff}$ take care of the short-range perturbations of the anisotropy and $N_{eff}$ is related to the long-range dipolar interactions. $N_{eff}$ is found to follow a logarithmic grain size size dependence ${\mu}_{0}H_{c}=(2\;K_{1}/M_{s}){\alpha}-N_{eff}(\beta1nD){\mu}_{0}M_{s}$. Several trends how to achieve the ideal situation $\alpha$->1 and $N_{eff}$->1->0 will be discussed.

The structural, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of $La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$: $Ag_x$ (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) composites were investigated systematically. X-ray and EDX analysis indicated that Ag is not substituted into the main $La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$ phase and remains an additive to the second phase at the grain boundary. The Curie temperature first decreased from 269 K for x = 0 to 257 K for x = 0.1 and then remained nearly unchanged with increasing Ag content. For the x > 0.1 samples, a second transition temperature ($T_{MI2}$) was observed in the resistance curves. At temperatures below 150 K, a significant enhancement in MR was observed while high temperature MR decreased with increasing Ag content. The maximum MR was observed to be 55% in the x = 0.4 sample at 10 K and a 6T magnetic field, this value is larger than that of pure $La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$ (53% at 265 K and 6 T). In addition, at low fields (H < 1T), a sharp increase in the MR was observed.
Soft magnetic composites (SMCs) are especially suitable for the construction of low-cost, high-performance motors with 3-D magnetic fields. The main advantages of SMCs is that the iron particles are insulated by the surface coating and adhesive used for composite bonding, the eddy-current loss is much lower than that in laminated steels, especially at higher frequencies, and the hysteresis loss becomes the dominant component of core losses. These properties enable machines to operate at higher frequencies, resulting in reduced machine size and weight. In this paper, 3-D topologies are proposed that enable the application of SMCs to effectively reduce losses in high-speed permanent magnet (PM) motors. In addition, the electromagnetic field characteristics of the motor topologies are evaluated and compared using a non-linear finite element method (FEM) based on 3-D numerical analysis, and the feasibility of the motor designs is validated.
Magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) were manufactured by incorporation of magnetic responsible powder (MRP) into natural rubber and silicone rubber. The optimum loading amounts of MRP was 30 vol.% and the natural rubber based MRE (NR-MRE) showed better mechanical property than that of silicone rubber based MRE (S-MRE). However, the modulus shift ratio caused by S-MRE, measured by Self-modified Electromagnet Applied Fast Fourier Transform Analyser (SEFFTA), was higher than that of NR-MRE. The modulus shift ratio caused by NR-MRE was 10%, while the modulus shift ratio caused by S-MRE was 35.7%. The modulus shift ratio could be improved by orienting the magnetic direction of MRP before crosslinking the MRE. The degree of orientation of MRP was analyzed using SEM.
The particulates reinforced metal matrix composites(PMMC) have a number of interesting mechanical properties. including high strength and good resistance to wear at high temperature and low thermal expansion. The equipment structure to obtain the homogeneous distribution in composites are proposed for the continuous pouring of reinforcement at the desired temperature. The particulates reinforced metal matrix composites(A357/SiCp) were fabricated by the process of the combined stirring method with the various fabrication process. The combined stirring method to niform distribution of particle is consisted of two stirring force both electro-magnetic stirring generated from induction heating and mechanical stirring with graphite stirrer. PMMC billets were fabricated with the volume fractions ranged from 0% to 20% and particle sizes ranged from 14${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. It is important to cont the size of primary $\alpha$-Al solid particles because it could become the cause of the particle pushing or capture phenomena from the fact that secondary dendrite arm spacing size depends on the cooling rate during the solidification in hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy. Therefore, the effect of primary $\alpha$-Al on the reinforcement distribution in matrix alloys has been investigated. The microstructure of PMMC fabracated with various volume fractions(0%, 10%, and 20%) and particle size were observed.
