  • In this paper, we analyzed and measured the characteristics of the ballasts for HID lamps according to the cable properties. The ignition voltage and the steady state voltage and current are depend on the feature and the length of the cables. So we measured characteristics at 25[m] and 100[m] distances used by a low frequency electronic ballast a high frequency electronic ballast and a magnetic ballast. By measured and analyzed result of characteristics for various kinds of ballast and cables, we concluded that the electronic ballast driving with the low frequency is better than my other ballasts, and that the capacitance between the cables is important.

  • The electronic ballast have much more shaking of arc than magnetic ballast because of acoustic resonance phenomenon. but it has used mare than before. In this paper, we made metal halide lamp modeling by modifying modeling of mercury lamp. To avoid acoustic resonance phenomenon, We calculated acoustic resonance frequency band. We proposed design of LCC circuit. Also, electronic ballast simulator for metal halide lamp was developed by simulink LCC parameters of inverter was decided on the basis of simulation results. After development of prototype ballast, it was verified the characteristics of simulator.

  • In this paper, In order to solve the problem is proposed using a new type of electronic ballast that the traditional magnetic ballasts operated at 50-60Hz have been suffered from noticeable flicker, high loss, large crest factor and heavy weight which is composed of rectifier, active power corrector, series resonant half bridge inverter, micro-controller and piezoelectric transformer for driving for driving T5 fluorescent lamp were manufactured. The proposed electronic ballast operated at high frequency (about 75kHz) shows a input power factor of more than 0.995, total harmonic distortion of less than $12\%$ and lamp current crest factor of less than 1.5, respectively. Output power and efficiency showed 28w and $85\%$, respectively. Accordingly, it is considered that the ballast using piezoelectric transformer can replace the typical electronic ballast.

  • In this paper, remote control and surveillance monitoring system of HID street-lamp using low-cost type of Zigbee communication module was developed. A plurality of capacitors with different capacity are attached to magnetic ballast for HID lamps. Changes in the amount of illumination can be adjusted by the changes in capacity so that the electric energy can be reduced. In Zigbee communication module, a ATmega128L microprocessor is used and in main CPU, ARM9 Core is used to construct a low-cost smart system. In surveillance monitoring systems, the system was configured to remote monitoring of presence of error in the lamp abnormalities, the status of leakage current and abnormalities of ballasts and capacitors and the validity of the proposed empirical experiment was confirmed.

  • This paper dealt with the design and fabrication of a low frequency electronic ballast for ruh attracting lamps. The proposed electronic ballast was composed of a full-wave rectifier, a step don converter operated as a constant power controled current source, an inverter operated by 130 Hz square wave, and an ignition circuit. An acoustic resonance phenomenon of discharge lamps could be eliminated by application of 130 Hz square wave. Also, a circuit of high voltage pulse generation for lamp ignition was added to the ballast. From the experimental results, voltage and current of the lamp operated by the electronic ballast were estimated 132.5 V and 7.6 A, respectively. and the power consumption was about 1,000 W. The weight of the ballast, which is one of important advantages, was reduced to one-fifth of conventional magnetic ballasts.

  • To produce low loss amorphous molding cores which are used as choke cores in high efficiency electronic ballast for Metal Halide Lamp, the magnetic properties of amorphous molding cores were investigated with the various fabrication methods. The results are as follows : (1) The total weight of molding core gradually increased as molding time increases. (2) The magnetic properties($B_{10}$, $B_r$, $B_t/B_s$, $H_c$, $W_c$) of molding core drastically deteriorated. This is presumably due to the compressive stress imposed on amorphous core occurred during epoxy curing treatment. (3) Two step annealing process(curing+field annealing) was more or less effective to recover the damaged properties.

  • Light-emitting diode (LED) drivers are recently replacing fluorescent lamps; these drivers can operate adaptively with various ballasts without modifying and removing such ballasts. To satisfy these trends, a LED driver that is compatible with both electronic and magnetic ballasts is proposed in this study. Unlike conventional LED drivers, the proposed driver has a ballast recognition circuit and a mode selection circuit to operate ballasts at optimal conditions. Therefore, it features low voltage stress, high efficiency, and good compatibility with both electronic and magnetic ballasts. Moreover, it can be compatible with a wide selection of ballasts from various manufacturers. To confirm the validity of the proposed LED driver, results of the theoretical analysis and experimental verification performed on a 15 W-rated prototype are presented.

  • It is required small size electronic ballast to fullfill the design philosophy of miniaturizing in the application of slim lamps. However, the traditional magnetic ballasts operated at 50-60Hz have been suffered from noticeable flicker, high loss, large crest factor and heavy weight. In this study, in order to solve these problems, It was proposed for driving 35W Class fluorescent lamp in the new type of electronic ballast, which is composed of rectifier, active power factor corrector, series resonant half bridge inverter and piezoelectric transformer. A 35W class(T5 class) fluorescent lamp is driven to successful by the fabricated ballast with piezoelectric transformer. Experimental results, It is proposed to driving the lamp using a electronic ballast at operating frequency of $75{\sim}79kHz$ approximatively. It is operated after for 25 min that were obtained good results of the input power factor of 0.95 and efficiency of 86%, respectively.

  • As a fundamental study to apply the new flocculation method using ballast in water treatment process, the optimal conditions for general and ballast coagulant dosage, and pH, which are known to have a significant influence, were derived by response surface methodology. Poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and magnetite ballast were used as a general coagulant and ballast, respectively. Coagulation experiments were performed by jar-tester using the kaolin based synthetic water. The effects of three independent variables (pH, PAC, and ballast) on response variables (turbidity removal rate and average settling velocity of flocs) and the optimum condition of independent variables to induce the optimum flocculation were obtained by 17 experimental conditions designed by Box-Behnken procedure. After performing experiments, the quadratic regression model was derived for each of response variables, and the response surface analysis was conducted to explore the correlation between independent variables and response variables. The $R^2$ values for the turbidity removal rate and the average settling velocity were 0.9909 and 0.8295, respectively. The optimal conditions of independent variables were 7.4 of pH, 38 mg/L of PAC and 1,000 mg/L of ballast. Under these conditions, the turbidity removal rate was more than 97% and the average settling velocity exceeded 35 m/h.
