Mg-9wt.%Al and Mg-9wt.%-1.6wt%Zn/SiCp(particle size $40{\mu}m$) metal-matrix-composite specimens were manufactured by rheo-compocasting method, known for its effect of improving the wettability. The ceramic reinforcement particles(SiCp) were dispersed in the semi-solid magnesium alloy matrix slurry being vigorously stirred in a high frequency induction furnace under inert atmosphere. A microstructural study of the dispersed particles in the specimens, prepared under different conditions as regards the time(10min, 20min, 30min) and temperature of the stirring, was made with the aid of optical microscope and SEM. The effect of superheating was also observed. It is revealed that 30 minutes' stirring time of the semi-solid at 40% solid fraction temperature(Mg-9wt.%Al : $590^{\circ}C$, AZ91 : $576^{\circ}C$), as determined by the lever rule, gives a satisfactorily uniform distribution of the particles. The superheating is observed to enhance further the uniformity.
In this paper, the FREECAD 0.14 was used for modeling conventional Selfie-stick and the newly proposed Selfie-stick design. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the utility of FREECAD 0.14, which is open-source and still in development for further use. After modeling the conventional Selfie-stick, CatiyaV5 was used to assemble FREECAD 0.14 drawn elements. Main issue in newly designed Selfie-stick is the portability. To improve portability of the Selfie-stick, folding mechanism was adopted from folding LED stands. Several mechanisms were adopted to improve user convenience as well. Ansys 14.0 was used for structural analyses of conventional Selfie-stick model and the newly designed model as well. Several simplifications for the models were needed to process the analyses. When analyzing the newly designed model various materials were used one by one to find compatible composition. Using Magnesium Alloy for the stick and the hand grip was found to be compatible. FREECAD was useful for suggestion of the newly designed model but not so much useful to design an actual product. Various efforts would make FreeCAD the best choice for industrial use for free as it is named.

Two step PEO ceramic coatings were formed on AZ91 magnesium alloy in $ZrO_2$ nanoparticles and $K_2ZrF_6$ based colloidal electrolyte solution for various voltages. Surface and layers tructure of the coatings was analyzed using SEM (ScanningElectronMicroscope). Structure analysis revealed that surface of the coating was transferred from individual pancake or craters-based structure to cluster-based structure with increasing the voltage of the secondary step process. Further, it was confirmed that the cluster zone was richin Zr-based complexes and formed due to high intensives parks. Increase in the Zr contents as discovered from the EDS analysis confirmed the rise in amorphous form of the Zr-based species, which justified the results of XRD where no increase in the intensity of Zr-based species was observed with increase in voltage. Potentiodynamic polarizariotion and impedance spectroscopy techniques were used to evaluate the corrosion performance of the coatings. The highest corrosion resistance was found for coatings prepared at 240V. The same specimen was found having highest and uniform vickers hardness ~1070.5 HV. The superior mechanical and electrochemical properties of the said coating can be attributed to the defect-less microstructure and the optimal role of $ZrO_2$ nanoparticles in the secondary PEO process at 240V.

Interfacial characteristics of aluminum borate whisker reinforced AS52 matrix composite was investigated. Peak hardness of AS52 composite was obtained aging at $170^{\circ}C$ for 15h and the aging process was accelerated by the presence of the aluminium borate whisker. The MgO layer, which was the interfacial reaction product between the reinforcement and the Mg matrix, was produced with 20 nm thickness in as-cast condition. As the aging time increased, the thickness of the interfacial reaction layer increased to 50 nm in peak aged condition. The nano-indentation test results indicated that the strength of interface was improved by the aging but over-aging degraded the reinforcement and decreased the interfacial strength which resulted in the decrease of overall composite strength.
A 76.5wt%Mg - 23.5wt%Ni (Mg-23.5Ni) sample was prepared by reactive mechanical grinding (RMG) and its hydriding and dehydriding properties were then investigated. Activation of the Mg-23.5Ni sample was completed only after two hydriding (under 12 bar $H_2$) - dehydriding (under 1.0 bar $H_2$) cycles at 593K. The reactive mechanical grinding of Mg with Ni is considered to facilitate nucleation and shorten diffusion distances of hydrogen atoms. After hydriding - dehydriding cycling, the Mg-23.5Ni sample contained Mg2Ni phase.
Mg and Mg-based alloys are regarded as strong candidate hydrogen storage materials since their hydrogen capacity exceeds that of known metal hydrides. One of the approaches to improve kinetic is addition of metal oxide. In this paper, we tried to improve the hydrogenation properties of Mg-based hydrogen storage composites. The effect of transition metal oxides, such as $Nb_2O_5$ on the kinetics of the Magnesium hydrogen absorption kinetics was investigated. $MgH_x$-5wt.% $Nb_2O_5$ composites have been synthesized by hydrogen induced mechanical alloying. The powder fabricated was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (Fe-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), BET and simultaneous Thermo Gravimetric Analysis / Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TG/DSC) analysis. The Absorption / desorption kinetics of $MgH_x$-5wt.% $Nb_2O_5$ (type I and II) are determined at 423, 473, 523, 573 and 623 K.
Mg-Zn-Zr ternary alloys containing 6wt% Zn and (0, 0.4, 0.6)wt% Zr, which is added for grain refinement, can be cast into complex shape by squeeze casting. The influence of Zn and Zr as additional elements on microstructure and mechanical characteristics is investigated by OM, SEM, WDX, XRD and microvickers hardness measurement. The microstructure of Mg-Zn-Zr alloys consists of primary ${\alpha}-Mg$ and MgZn eutectic compound between dendrites. The grain size is decreased from $136{\mu}m$ to $97\;{\mu}m$ by Zr addition, resulting in that the hardness is increased from 42Hv to 59Hv. Furthermore, the grain size is changed to $83{\beta}$ and the hardness is increased to 65Hv by additional infiltration pressure. These results indicate that the Zr addition and additional infiltration pressure are effective for grain refinement acting as an important factor to increase the hardness. The increment in hardness by the Zr addition is slightly larger than that by the additional infiltration pressure.
A 71.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni-5 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ (Mg-23.5Ni-$5Fe_2O_3$) sample was prepared by a quite simple process, reactive mechanical grinding, and its hydriding and dehydriding properties were then investigated. The reactive mechanical grinding of Mg with Ni and $Fe_2O_3$ is considered to facilitate nucleation and shorten the diffusion distances of the hydrogen atoms. After the hydriding-dehydriding cycling, the Mg-23.5Ni-$5Fe_2O_3$ sample contained $Mg_2Ni$ phase. Expansion and contraction of the hydride-forming materials (Mg and $Mg_2Ni$) with the hydriding and dehydriding reactions are also considered to increase the hydriding and dehydriding rates of the mixture by forming defects and cracks leading to the fragmentation of the particles. The temperature dependence of the hydriding rate of the sample is discussed.
Titanium is the fourth most abundant structural metal, after aluminum, iron, and magnesium. However, it is classified as a 'rare metals', because it is difficult to smelt. In particular, the primary titanium production process is highly energy-intensive. Recycling titanium scraps to produce ingots can reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions by approximately 95 %. However, the amount of metal recycled from scrap remains limited of the difficulty in removing impurities such as iron and oxygen from the scrap. Generally, high-grade titanium and its alloy scraps are recycled by dilution with a virgin titanium sponge during the remelting process. Low-grade titanium scrap is recycled to ferrotitanium (cascade recycling). This paper provides an overview of titanium production and recycling processes.

Electropulsing treatment (EPT) has been developed as an alternative to furnace heat treatment (FHT) to exploit its engineering advantages in rapidly annealing metallic materials. Conventionally, the separation of thermal and athermal effects of EPT has been attempted by comparing EPT and FHT specimens processed under identical temperature and duration. However, this method inherently introduces experimental and measurement errors. This study proposes a novel approach to distinguish the thermal and athermal effects of EPT-processed metals using T-shaped specimen with two observation points, namely 'C' and 'D'. For verification, the thermal gradient of T-shaped Mg alloys was examined under various EPT conditions. The points C exhibited higher temperatures compared to those at points D at a given electric current density, because only the former received both thermal and athermal effects. It was confirmed from twelve specimens that the point C at an electric current density of 65 A·mm-2 and point D at 70 A·mm-2 exhibited similar temperatures. This developed method is expected to reduce measurement errors in distinguishing thermal and athermal effects, thus providing a deeper understanding of their quantitative contributions in future studies.
