  • A computerized design system of axial fan is developed for constructing 3-D blade geometry and predicting both aerodynamic performance and noise. The aerodynamic blading design of fan is conducted by blade angle distribution, camber line determination, airfoil thickness distribution and blade element stacking along spanwise distance. The internal flow and the aerodynamic performance of designed fan are predicted by the through-flow modeling technique with flow deviation and pressure loss correlations. Based on the predicted internal flow field and performance data, fan noise is predicted by two models for discrete frequency and broadband noise sources. The present predictions of the flow distribution, the performance and the noise level of actual fans are well agreed with measurement results.

  • In this paper, floor impact noise reduction in cruise ship cabin is studied. A mock-up is built by using 6t steel plate, and two identical cabins are made where 25t panel is used to construct wall and ceiling inside the steel structure. Various floating floor systems are tested for which normalized impact noise is measured according to ISO 140-7. In addition, floor SBN (Structure-borne Noise) and floor damping are measured to study the effect of floating floor structure. It is shown that VL(Visco-elastic Layer) is more effective when hard plates are added above the VL.

  • Rotating machinery has two typical faults with clearance, one is partial rub and the other is looseness. Due to these faults, non-linear and non-stationary signals are occurred. Therefore, time-frequency analysis is necessary for exact fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. In this paper newly developed time-frequency analysis method, HHT(Hilbert-Huang Transform) is applied to fault diagnosis and compared with other method of FFT, SFFT and CWT. The results show that HHT can represent better resolution than any other method. Consequently, the faults of rotating machinery are diagnosed efficiently by using HHT.

  • Various shapes of the noise barrier frame and construction of the sound absorbing panels are studied. It is found that insertion of the sound absorbing panel into barrier frame results in the decrease of the sound absorption coefficient, while the empty frame shows a peak around 250Hz. Using double sound absorbing panels with air gap can increase sound absorption coefficient up to NRC 0.85.

  • In this paper, SBN (Structure-Borne Noise) reduction of resiliently mounted machinery and effect of the foundation impedance on mount performance is studied. SBN reduction through the mount is analyzed by using two theoretical models; mass-spring model and wave model, in which longitudinal wave propagation is included. It is found that floor impedance greatly affects SBN reduction through lower mount, while it is almost negligible to SBN reduction through upper mount. Comparisons between measurement and predictions shows that the mass-spring model is valid only in low frequency range below few hundred Hz, while for high frequency ranges longitudinal wave propagation in the mount must be considered.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of design parameters on the volume flow-rate and the noise level and to finally find the optimal design variables. Eighteen cross-flow fans were designed by the method of orthogonal array, and the flow-rate and the noise level were measured. These data were analyzed by the neural network system. The effects of eight design variables(scroll exit angle, scroll arc length et al.) on the fan performance and the noise level were valuated and discussed. This experiment shows that the design solutions suggested by neural network system may increase its volume flow-rate and reduce noise simultaneously.

  • InThe purpose of this work is to analyze the flow characteristics and aerodynamic noise generated from a shroud fan at a constant 2,100 rpm using LES and FW-H noise model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Velocity distributions around the shroud fan obtained by using FLUENT code show good agreement with experimental results. The sound pressure level is decreased by about 6 dB as the distance from the fan increases twice. The directivity at 1st BPF shows a tendency of increasing SPL toward the axis of rotation.

  • An aero-acoustic performance analysis method of regenerative blower is developed as one of the FANDAS codes. The aerodynamic performance of regenerative blower is predicted by using momentum exchange theory coupled with pressure loss and leakage flow models. Based on the performance prediction results, the noise level and spectrum of regenerative blower are predicted by discrete frequency and broadband noise models. The combination of the performance and the noise prediction methods gives aero-acoustic performance map and noise spectrum analysis results, which are well-agreed with the actual measurement results within a few percent relative error.

  • In this paper, noise and vibration reduction of double-resiliently mounted pump-like machinery is studied. SBN(Structure-borne noise) reduction through upper and lower mount is analyzed by assuming that the system is modeled as a mass-spring system. In addition, the impedance of the floor is included in the prediction. The comparison of the SBN difference through upper mount show that the effect of impedance is negligible, while the measurement differs significantly from the prediction for high frequency range. It is found that the assumption of point mass-spring system leads to the disagreement between prediction and measurements.

  • Fan selection procedure and fan noise evaluation method are presented for the system electronic cooling by combining FNM(Flow Network Model) and fan noise correlation model. Internal flow paths and distribution in electronic system we analyzed by using the FNM with the flow resistances for flow elements of the system. Based on the fan operation point predicted from the FNM analysis results, the present fan noise model predicts overall sound power, pressure levels and spectrum. The predictions of the flow distribution, the fan operation and the noise level in electronic system by the present method are well agreed with 3-D CFD and actual test results.
