  • Recently, an analysis method using machine learning for solving problems in coastal and ocean engineering has been highlighted. Machine learning models are effective modeling tools for predicting specific parameters by learning complex relationships based on a specified dataset. In coastal and ocean engineering, various studies have been conducted to predict dependent variables such as wave parameters, tides, storm surges, design parameters, and shoreline fluctuations. Herein, we introduce and describe the application trend of machine learning models in coastal and ocean engineering. Based on the results of various studies, machine learning models are an effective alternative to approaches involving data requirements, time-consuming fluid dynamics, and numerical models. In addition, machine learning can be successfully applied for solving various problems in coastal and ocean engineering. However, to achieve accurate predictions, model development should be conducted in addition to data preprocessing and cost calculation. Furthermore, applicability to various systems and quantifiable evaluations of uncertainty should be considered.

  • Deep Learning is one of the machine learning methods to find features from a huge data using non-linear transformation. It is now commonly used for supervised learning in many fields. In particular, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is the best technique for the image classification since 2012. For users who consider deep learning models for real-world applications, Keras is a popular API for neural networks written in Python and also can be used in R. We try examine the parameter estimation procedures of Deep Neural Network and structures of CNN models from basics to advanced techniques. We also try to figure out some crucial steps in CNN that can improve image classification performance in the CIFAR10 dataset using Keras. We found that several stacks of convolutional layers and batch normalization could improve prediction performance. We also compared image classification performances with other machine learning methods, including K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN), Random Forest, and XGBoost, in both MNIST and CIFAR10 dataset.

  • Machine Learning is a process of using computer algorithms to extract information from raw data to solve complex problems in a data-rich environment. It has been used in the construction industry by both academics and practitioners for multiple applications to improve the construction process. The Construction Industry Institute, a leading construction research organization has twenty-five years of experience in benchmarking capital projects in the industry. The organization is at an advantage to develop useful machine learning applications because it possesses enormous real construction data. Its benchmarking programs have been actively used by owner and contractor companies today to assess their capital projects' performance. A credible benchmarking program requires statistically valid data without subjective interference in the program administration. In developing the next-generation benchmarking program, the Data Warehouse, the organization aims to use machine learning algorithms to minimize human effort and to enable rapid data ingestion from diverse sources with data validity and reliability. This research effort uses a focus group comprised of practitioners from the construction industry and data scientists from a variety of disciplines. The group collaborated to identify the machine learning requirements and potential applications in the program. Technical and domain experts worked to select appropriate algorithms to support the business objectives. This paper presents initial steps in a chain of what is expected to be numerous learning algorithms to support high-performance computing, a fully automated performance benchmarking system.

  • Deep learning has made great strides in the field of unstructured data such as text, images, and audio. However, in the case of tabular data analysis, machine learning algorithms such as ensemble methods are still better than deep learning. To keep up with the performance of machine learning algorithms with good predictive power, several deep learning methods for tabular data have been proposed recently. In this paper, we review the latest deep learning models for tabular data and compare the performances of these models using several datasets. In addition, we also compare the latest boosting methods to these deep learning methods and suggest the guidelines to the users, who analyze tabular datasets. In regression, machine learning methods are better than deep learning methods. But for the classification problems, deep learning methods perform better than the machine learning methods in some cases.

  • Recently, artificial intelligence has reached the level of top information technologies that will have significant influence over many aspects of our future lifestyles. In particular, in the fields of machine learning technologies for classification and decision-making, there have been a lot of research efforts for solving estimation and control problems that appear in the various kinds of portfolio management problems via data-driven approaches. Note that these modern data-driven approaches, which try to find solutions to the problems based on relevant empirical data rather than mathematical analyses, are useful particularly in practical application domains. In this paper, we consider some applications of modern data-driven machine learning methods for portfolio management problems. More precisely, we apply a simplified version of the sparse Gaussian process (GP) classification method for classifying users' sensitivity with respect to financial risk, and then present two portfolio management issues in which the GP application results can be useful. Experimental results show that the GP applications work well in handling simulated data sets.

  • The flow from developing a machine learning model to deploying it in a production environment suffers challenges. Efficient and reliable deployment is critical for realizing the true value of machine learning models. Bridging this gap between development and publication has become a pivotal concern in the machine learning community. FastAPI, a modern and fast web framework for building APIs with Python, has gained substantial popularity for its speed, ease of use, and asynchronous capabilities. This paper focused on leveraging FastAPI for deploying machine learning models, addressing the potentials associated with integration, scalability, and performance in a production setting. In this work, we explored the seamless integration of machine learning models into FastAPI applications, enabling real-time predictions and showing a possibility of scaling up for a more diverse range of use cases. We discussed the intricacies of integrating popular machine learning frameworks with FastAPI, ensuring smooth interactions between data processing, model inference, and API responses. This study focused on elucidating the integration of machine learning models into production environments using FastAPI, exploring its capabilities, features, and best practices. We delved into the potential of FastAPI in providing a robust and efficient solution for deploying machine learning systems, handling real-time predictions, managing input/output data, and ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

  • Many recent theoretical developments in the field of machine learning and control have rapidly expanded its relevance to a wide variety of applications. In particular, a variety of portfolio optimization problems have recently been considered as a promising application domain for machine learning and control methods. In highly uncertain and stochastic environments, portfolio optimization can be formulated as optimal decision-making problems, and for these types of problems, approaches based on probabilistic machine learning and control methods are particularly pertinent. In this paper, we consider probabilistic machine learning and control based solutions to a couple of portfolio optimization problems. Simulation results show that these solutions work well when applied to real financial market data.

  • Deep learning methods have been developed, used in various fields, and they have shown outstanding performances in many cases. Many studies predicted a daily stock return, a classic example of time-series data, using deep learning methods. We also tried to apply deep learning methods to Korea's stock market data. We used Korea's stock market index (KOSPI) and several individual stocks to forecast daily returns and directions. We compared several deep learning models with other machine learning methods, including random forest and XGBoost. In regression, long short term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) models are better than other prediction models. For the classification applications, there is no clear winner. However, even the best deep learning models cannot predict significantly better than the simple base model. We believe that it is challenging to predict daily stock return data even if we use the latest deep learning methods.

  • Computer architecture serves as a link between application requirements and underlying technology capabilities such as technical, mathematical, medical, and business applications' computational and storage demands are constantly increasing. Machine learning these days grown and used in many fields and it performed better than traditional computing in applications that need to be implemented by using mathematical algorithms. A mathematical algorithm requires more extensive and quicker calculations, higher computer architecture specification, and takes longer execution time. Therefore, there is a need to improve the use of computer hardware such as CPU, memory, etc. optimization has a main role to reduce the execution time and improve the utilization of computer recourses. And for the importance of execution time in implementing machine learning supervised module linear regression, in this paper we focus on optimizing machine learning algorithms, for this purpose we write a (Diabetes prediction program) and applying on it a Practical Swarm Optimization (PSO) to reduce the execution time and improve the utilization of computer resources. Finally, a massive improvement in execution time were observed.
