Correlations between Biomechanical Characteristics, Physical Characteristics, and the Ability to Maintain Dynamic Sitting Balance on an Unstable Surface in the Disabled with Spinal Cord Injury

  • Objective: This study aims to analyze the factors that affect the ability to maintain dynamic sitting balance (DSB), biomechanical characteristics, and physical characteristics in spinal cord injuries (SCI) patients. Background: Virtual ski training systems, ski equipment, and training protocols for disabled skiers are being studied to spread awareness. However, few studies have been reported on the sitting balance ability associated with chair mono skiing. Method: A dynamic sitting balance border system was built to investigate the ability to maintain dynamic sitting balance in SCI patients. Trunk muscle activity was evaluated by electromyogram while conducting dynamic sitting balance tests. The trunk muscle strength was tested with a portable handheld dynamometer. Physical activity scores were measured with the physical activity recall assessment. Results: There were high levels of correlation between the ability to maintain DSB and trunk flexor strength, extensor strength, rotator strength, and physical activity score. However, height, weight, and injury level in SCI patients were not correlated with the ability to maintain DSB. Additionally, strong negative correlations were found between muscle activities of the external oblique and lumbar erector spinae muscles and the ability to perform the backward tilt test. Trunk extensor muscle activity during the ball lifting test was significantly higher than in other tests. Conclusion: The results indicate that improving trunk muscle strength and physical activity can increase the ability to maintain DSB. Application: The findings of a close relationship between trunk strength, physical activity, and the ability to maintain DSB need to be reflected in the chair mono ski training program.

Comparison of Shoulder Stabilizer Muscle Activity on Push-up plus in Convergence in Various Posture (다양한 자세의 푸시업 플러스 융합 운동에 따른 어깨 안정근의 근활성도 비교)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the change to the muscle activity from the serratus anterior(SA) of 5th and 7th, upper trapezius(UT), middle trapezius(MT) lower trapezius (LT), and pectoralis major(PM) when push-up plus exercise(PUP) is performed in four postures. 25 healthy, young participants performed various PUP convergence exercise(general posture, $90^{\circ}$, $120^{\circ}$ and BOSU). The muscle activity of the shoulder stability muscles was measured using a surface EMG analysis system during various PUP convergence exercise. One-way repeated-measure of ANOVA was conducted to comparison the activity of each muscle. There was significant difference in SA7, PM, UT, and MT (p <.05) during various PUP. The muscle activity of SA7 had a significance difference between PUP and $90^{\circ}PUP$ or BOSUPUP respectively (p <.05). The muscle activity of PM had a significance difference between $90^{\circ}PUP$ and PUP or BOSUPUP (p <.05). The muscle activity of UT had a significance differnce between $90^{\circ}PUP$ and PUP or BOSUPUP (p <.05). The muscle activity of MT had a significance differnce between $90^{\circ}PUP$ and PUP and also significantly difference PUP and $120^{\circ}PUP$(p <.05). These results suggest that general PUP can be a useful to improve to scapular stabilizer muscle in who has no shoulder dysfunction.

  • To investigate on the biochemical characteristics of muscle fiber, myofibrils and actomyosins were prepared front red muscle and white muscle, and their ATPase activities and SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterns were compared. Also biochemical characteristics of bovine muscle were compared with those of chicken muscle for the detection of species characteristics. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic analysis indicated that red muscle contained nlore 30K component of myofibril than white muscle. Differences in KCI concen-tration dependency of actomyosin ATPase activities and ATPase activity-pH cone were observed, when bovine muscle were compared with chicken muscle.

  • Inpatients are mostly occupied in bed with restricted activity, nearly all patient populations are at risk for the occurrence of skeletal muscle atrophy due to decreased level of activity. Restriction of mobility is far greater in pediatric patients compared with adult patients since almost all the activities of daily living is performed by parents or caregivers. It could be assumed that pediatric patients are more vulnerable to skeletal muscle atrophy than adult patients, however, there have been no attempts to reduce the atrophy of developing muscle. Therefore it is important to determine the effect of exercise in developing muscle during decreased activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of periodic weight support during hindlimb suspension on the mass and cross-sectional area of Type I and II fibers in developing soleus(Type I ) muscle. To examine the effectiveness of periodic weight support activity in maintaining mass and fiber size. the hindlimb of young female Wistar rats was suspended(HS) and half of these rats walked on a treadmill for 45min / day(15min every 4h) at 5m / min at a 15 grade(HS-WS). After 7days of hindlimb suspension, soleus wet weight was 28. 57% smaller and relative soleus weight was 28. 21% smaller in comparison with con-trol rats (p〈0.05) Soleus wet weight and relative soleus weight increased by 67.72% and 71.43% each with periodic weight support activity during hindlimb suspension (p〈0.01, p〈0.005), moreover soleus wet weight and relative soleus weight of the HS -WS rats were greater than those of the control group. No change was observed in fiber type percentage of the developing soleus muscle after 1 week of hindlimb suspension plus weight support activity. Type I and II fiber cross-sectional areas of the developing soleus muscle were 50.45% and 43.39% lower in the HS group than in the control group (p〈0.0001), type I and II fiber cross-sectional areas of the developing soleus were 24.49% and 29.93% greater in the HS - WS group than in the HS rats (p〈0.0001), whereas Type I and II fiber cross-sectional areas of HS - WS group were less than those of the control group, The results suggest that periodic weight support activity can ameliorate developing soleus muscle atrophy induced by hindlimb suspension, even in type II fibers that would not have been expected to be recruited by this type of neuromuscular demand. Clinical experimental study is needed to deter-mine the effect of periodic weight bearing exercise on developing atrophied leg muscle based on these results.

Surface EMG Verification according to the Electrode Location in Biceps Brachii during Arm Curl Isometric Exercise (암컬 등척성 운동 시 상완이두근에서의 EMG 전극 위치에 따른 근 활성 검증)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the muscle activity by electrode location in the biceps brachii during the arm curl isometric exercise and to provide the basic data needed to develop the proper electrode location of the biceps brachii based on the study results comparing the muscle activity by the angle of the elbow joint. Method: 17 adult males (Age: 21.50±4.63 yrs, height: 175.29±5.97 cm, weight: 63.79±15.31 kg, upper-arm length: 30.10±1.22 cm) participated in the study. In the arm curls isometric exercise, the experiment was divided into 1st and 2nd steps to compare muscle activity according to electrode location in the biceps brachii and muscle activity according to elbow angle change. In the first experiment, the surface electrode was attached at one-third point on the line from medial acromion to cubital fossa, according to the measurement method indicated by SENIAM. The elbow angle was set to 90°. In the second experiment, according to the proposed method of this study, the electrodes were separated at one finger's width in the left and right direction at one-third point on the line from medial acromion to cubital fossa, attached at the long head and short head. From the long head electrode, in about a width of two fingers in proximal direction, a total of three electrodes were attached at the myotendinal junction of the long head. The elbow angles were set as 70°, 90°, and 110°, and the isometric exercise (100% MVC) for 5 seconds was maintained with keeping the forearm and the rope to be 90° for the first and second experiments. Results: During the arm curl isometric exercise, there was no significant difference in SH and SENIAM proposition location proposed by this researcher. LH was shown to be lower than the muscle activity of the location proposed by SENIAM and there were significant (p<.01) differences. MJ appeared lower than the muscle activity of the location proposed by SENIAM and there were significant (p<.001) differences. The muscle activity by the elbow joint angle of SH in the biceps brachii was shown in large order of 70°<90°<110°, but there was no significant difference. The muscle activity by the elbow joint angle of LH was shown in large order of 90°<70°<110°, but there was no significant difference. The muscle activity by the elbow joint angle of MJ was shown in large order of 110°<90°<70°, but there was no significant difference. Conclusion: During the arm curl isometric exercise of the biceps brachii, it is judged appropriate to attach surface electrodes to the location proposed by SENIAM.

The Swallowing Pattern in TMD Patients with Anterior Open Bite (전치부 개방교합을 동반한 측두하악장애가 연하에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study explored the influence of temporomandibular disorders(TMD) with anterior open bite on swallowing. Fifteen subjects with anterior open bite(group A), 9 subjects with anterior open bite and TMD(group B), and 24 subjects without malocclusion or TMD symptoms (group C) were included. BioPAK system(Bioresearch Inc., Milwaukee, WI, USA) was used to record the muscle activities of anterior temporal, masseter, sternocleidomastoid(SCM) and anterior digastric muscles during maximum clenching and swallowing. Positional change of the mandible during swallowing was also recorded using the same system. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Group A, B, and C did not show significant differences each other in the muscle activity of resting position in most of head and neck muscles. 2. Group B showed significantly lower muscle activity in maximum clenching than group C in anterior temporal(p<0.01), masseter(p<0.05), SCM(p<0.05) and digastric muscles(p<0.05). 3. Group A showed significantly lower muscle activity during swallowing than group C in anterior temporal and masseter muscles(p<0.01). Group B showed significantly lower muscle activity during swallowing than group C in anterior temporal(p<0.01), masseter(p<0.01), and SCM muscles(p<0.05). 4. Group A and B showed increased positional change of the mandible during swallowing measured from vertical, anteroposterior and lateral aspects, and prolonged swallowing(p<0.05). 5. After given instructions for normal swallowing pattern, group A and B showed increased muscle activity during swallowing in anterior temporal, masseter and SCM muscles(p<0.01). Positional change of the mandible and time elapsed for swallowing also decreased after the instruction(p<0.01). 6. Occlusal splint did not change the muscle activity during swallowing. However, vertical change(p<0.01) and swallowing time(p<0.05) were decreased with splint.

Effect of Taping Method Using Elastic Tape and Non-elastic Tape on Pain, Grip Strength, and Muscle Activity in Middle-aged Female Patients with Lateral Epicondylitis (가쪽 위관절융기염이 있는 중년 여성 환자에게 탄력테이프과 비탄력테이프를 이용한 테이핑 적용이 통증과 악력, 근활성도에 미치는 영향)

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of taping method using elastic tape and non-elastic tape on pain, grip strength and muscle activity in middle-aged female patients with lateral epicondylitis. METHODS: The subjects were 40- to 50-year-old female patients with lateral epicondylitis. A total of 22 subjects were divided into two groups, and each group had 11 patients. The intervention was carried out three times a week for 4 weeks. One group applied tape using elastic tape (ETG) while the other group applied tape using non-elastic tape (NETG). The measurement factors were pain, grip strength, and muscle activity. Pain was measured using VAS. Grip strength was measured using a grip dynamometer, and muscle activity was measured using EMG in the affected extensor carpi radialis brevis. Changes in interventions were compared among the groups using a paired t-test. The comparison between groups compared delta values (Changed values) between pre- and post-intervention using an independent t-test. RESULTS: In both groups, there was a statistically significant decrease in VAS. However, there was no statistically significant decrease in the delta value of VAS between ETG and NETG. In both groups, grip strength and muscle activity increased after intervention. There were statistically significant differences in delta values between ETG and NETG. CONCLUSION: Taping is a good intervention method for patients with lateral epicondylitis. Both elastic tape and non-elastic tape were effective. In particular, taping using elastic tape is an effective method for improving muscle function with pain reduction.

Relationship between Exercising Activity, Muscle Mass, Muscular Strength and Cognitive Function in the Elderly (노인의 운동참여, 근육량, 근력 및 인지기능과의 관련성)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among Exercising Activity, muscle mass, Muscular strength and cognitive function of 274 elderly people aged 65 years and older living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do As for the data collection methods, were measured the Exercising Activity, muscle mass and muscular strength and the Korean version of Mini Mental State Examination(MMSE-K) and digit span test were measured. The results are as follows First, there was a statistically significant correlation between Exercising activity, muscle mass, muscular strength, and cognitive function of the elderly. Second, Exercising activity of the elderly showed a positive (+) influence on muscle mass, muscular strength, and cognitive function. Third, the muscle mass of the elderly showed a statistically significant (+) influence on muscular strength and cognitive function. Fourth, the strength of the elderly showed a positive (+) influence on cognitive function.

Comparative Analysis of the Serratus Anterior Muscle Activity When Right and Left Knee Lift during Quadruped Position on Push Up Plus

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of the right or left knee lift during push up plus in the quadruped position on the serratus anterior (SA) muscle activity. Methods: Twenty-one subjects (male 11, female 10) performed the quadruped position on push up plus. The muscle activities of the lower trapezius (LT), SA, and upper trapezius (UT) were measured by surface electromyography. Repeated measurements of one-way ANOVA were performed for statistical analysis of the data, and the criterion for statistical significance was set to p<0.05 and comparative analysis of the UT and SA ratio using a Paired t-test. Results: The right SA increased the muscle activity of the right knee lift during quadruped position push up plus (p<0.05). In particular, the right SA muscle activity was higher than the left. In addition, comparative analysis of the UT and SA ratio to the right knee lift during quadruped position push up plus was performed (p<0.05). The right was found to be a significant statistic compared to the left, but the left SA increased the muscle activity of the left knee lift during quadruped position push up plus (p<0.05). The left SA muscle activity was higher than right. In addition, comparative analysis of UT and SA ratio to the left knee lift during quadruped position push up plus was performed (p<0.05). The left was found to be a significance statistic than the right. In addition, the interaction effect between the groups showed significant differences (p<0.05). Conclusion: Knee lift during push up plus is recommended for the selective activation of a research exercise protocol of one side of the serratus anterior.

Comparison of Muscle Activity of Thigh and Plantar Pressure according to the Change in Base of Support during Lunge (런지 시 기저면 변화에 따른 넙다리 근육의 근활성도와 족저압 비교 연구)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to suggest effective lunge exercise methods for various purposes by comparing differences in the muscle activity of thigh and plantar pressure according to changes in base of support during lunge exercises. Methods: The subjects were 20 college students who agreed to participate in the experiment. They performed three types of lunges-a basic lunge (BL), wide lunge (WL), and narrow lunge (NL). In a static position during each lunge, the muscle activity of the thigh and plantar pressure were measured. Each movement was maintained for 7 seconds, and the muscle activity for the 3 seconds in the middle was measured and analyzed. The plantar pressure was divided into six areas for analysis. The subjects randomly performed the lunges to prevent the influence of an experimental sequence. Each movement was performed three times, and the mean value of the three measurements was analyzed. Results: The analysis of muscle activities in the thigh during the three lunge movements showed statistically significantly higher muscle activity of biceps femoris in WL and NL than BL. Moreover, the analysis of plantar force showed statistically significant differences between BL and WL and WL and NL on the medial-forefoot and medial-midfoot, as well as between BL and WL and BL and NL on the lateral-midfoot. The analysis of plantar contact pressure exhibited statistically significant differences between BL and NL and WL and NL on the medial-forefoot, as well as a statistically significant difference between WL and NL on the medial-midfoot and lateral-hindfoot. Conclusion: This study suggests that changing the base of support during lunges can be useful to suit the purposes of various rehabilitation programs.
