Rare earth removal from pyroprocessing fuel product for preparing MSR fuel

  • A series of experiments were performed to produce a fuel source for a molten salt reactor (MSR) through pyroprocessing technology. A simulated LiCl-KCl-UCl3-NdCl3 salt system was prepared, and the U element was fully recovered using a liquid cadmium cathode (LCC) by applying a constant current. As a result, the salt was purified with an UCl3 concentration lower than 100 ppm. Subsequently, the U/RE ingot was prepared by melting U and RE metals in Y2O3 crucible at 1473 K as a surrogate for RE-rich ingot product from pyroprocessing. The produced ingot was sliced and used as a working electrode in LiCl-KCl-LaCl3 salt. Only RE elements were then anodically dissolved by applying potential at - 1.7 V versus Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The RE-removed ingot product was used to produce UCl3 via the reaction with NH4Cl in a sealed reactor.

Excluding molten fluoride salt from nuclear graphite by SiC/glassy carbon composite coating

  • SiC coating and SiC/glassy carbon composite coating were prepared on IG-110 nuclear graphite (Toyo Tanso Co., Ltd., Japan) to strengthen its inertness to molten fluoride salt used in molten salt reactor (MSR). Two kinds of modified graphite were obtained and correspondingly named as IG-110-1 and IG-110-2, which referred to modified IG-110 with a single SiC coating and a SiC/glassy carbon composite coating, respectively. Both structure and property of modified graphite were carefully researched and contrasted with virgin IG-110. Results indicated that modified graphite presented better comprehensive properties such as more compact structure and higher resistance to molten salt infiltration. With the protection of coatings, the infiltration amounts of fluoride salt into modified graphite were much less than that into virgin IG-110 at the same circumstance. Especially, the infiltration amount of fluoride salt into IG-110-2 under 5 atm was merely 0.26 wt%, which was much less than that into virgin IG-110 under 1.5 atm (13.5 wt%) and the critical index proposed for nuclear graphite used in MSR (0.5 wt%). The SiC/glassy carbon composite coating gave rise to highest resistance to molten salt infiltration into IG-110-2, and thus demonstrated it could be a promising protective coating for nuclear graphite used in MSR.

수중드론 운용에 관한 국제법적 논란과 대한민국의 전략 (The Controversy Surrounding the Use of Underwater Drones and the Position of Korea)

  • On 15 December 2015, China seized an underwater drone belonging to the U.S. in the South China Sea. The underwater drone was then about to be retrieved by the Bowditch, a U.S. naval ship.Although China returned the underwater drone to the U.S. on 20 December 2016, the incident resulted in the considerable controversy involving the use of underwater drones. The reason for this is that the seizure of the underwater drone happened in the exclusive economic zone (hereafter referred to as "EEZ") of the Philippines. Part XIII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (hereafter referred to as "UNCLOS") governs the matters of marine scientific research (hereafter referred to as "MSR"). If a State intends to use an underwater drone in the EEZ of another coastal State for the purpose of MSR, the former has to obtain the consent of the latter in accordance with relevant provisions included in Part XIII of the UNCLOS. However, it is not obvious whether the consent of a coastal State should be required to launch an underwater drone in the EEZ of the State for the purpose of hydrographic surveying or military surveying. Maritime powers such as the U.S. regard hydrographic surveying or military surveying as part of "other internationally lawful uses of the sea related to these freedoms, such as those associated with the operation of ships, aircraft and submarine cables and pipelines" found in Article 58(1) of the UNCLOS, or part of the freedom of the high seas. This interpretation is not incompatible with the implications that the UNCLOS has. Nevertheless, Korea cannot accept this kind of interpretation that is supported by maritime powers. The freedom of hydrographic surveying or military surveying could imply that the EEZ of Korea would be full of underwater drones launched by China, Japan or even Russia. Hence, Korea should claim that the data collected for the purpose of MSR cannot be distinguished from that collected for the purpose of hydrographic surveying or military surveying. This means that hydrographic surveying or military surveying without the consent of a coastal State in the EEZ of the State should not be permitted.

  • Macrophage scavenger receptors (MSRs) induce microglial interaction with ${\beta}$-amyloid fibrils (fA${\beta}$) that are associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although microglia are know n to have a dual effect on formation of plaque and clearance of fA${\beta}$ in the AD brain, receptor-mediated phagocytosis is a very important tool for preventing amyloid plaque via activated microglia in the early stage of AD. In the study, we examined whether ginsonoside Rg3 enhances the microglial Phagocytosis of A${\beta}$1-42 through Phagocytosis assay, gene expression (RT-PCR) and protein assay (western blots) for the cell responsiveness presented between Rg3-treated and non-treated groups. Fluro-labeled Ac-LDL and E.coli particles were used as control proteins for phagocytosis. In previous studies, this was a particularly interesting property of Rg3 in the stimulation and phagocytosis of macrophages in the periphery. We report here that ginsenoside Rg3 increased the expression of type-A MSR (MSR-A) in microglia and thus accelerated the phagocytosis with an effective degradation of engulfed fA${\beta}$. This result suggests that Rg3 may play an important role in removing fA${\beta}$ by enhancing the receptor-mediated phagocytosis. In addition, Rg3 could be a potential candidate for balancing the rate of production of fA${\beta}$ in AD brain.

Effect of Biosurfactant Addition on the Biodegradation of Phenanthrene in Soil-water System

  • The extent of solubility enhancement by biosurfactant was examined at various pHs prior to the biodegradation experiments. The molar solubilization ratio (MSR) was calculated from the batch solubilization experiments and the highest MSR was detected at pH 5. The effect of the biosurfactant, rhamnolipids, on the phenanthrene mineralization in soil-water system was investigated. The strain 3Y was selected for the mineralization assay and large amounts of phenanthrene were degraded at neutral pH in soil-water system without the biosurfactant. The addition of 150 mg/L rhamnolipids showed no effect on mineralization of phenanthrene in soil-water system, and total mineralization rates after 6 weeks incubation at each pH showed no differences in presence and absence of rhamnolipids. Our result indicated that the toxic effect of rhamnolipids can disappear when soil particles exist, and also the enhanced solubility of phenanthrene does not work for mineralization enhancement in this soil-water system.

  • Copper (Cu)-based catalysts have been widely used in a methanol steam reforming (MSR) reaction for hydrogen production for air-independent propulsion (AIP) applications and their good catalytic activities have attracted much attention. However, the agglomeration of the catalytic active site Cu causes deteriorating the catalytic performance and suppression of Cu agglomeration is a crucial issue in the AIP applications that the MSR system is typically operated at 250-300℃ for a long time. R. Sakai et al. recently showed a computational study on the anchoring effect that reduces an agglomeration of active sites by doping in a supporter. In order to present the anchoring effect on 𝛾-Al2O3 supported Cu-based catalysts, in this study, the adsorption energies of Cu on X-doped (X=ruthenium, phosphorus, silicon) 𝛾-Al2O3 were calculated and Cu adsorption energy decreased due to a change of the electronic structure originated from doping, thereby proving the anchoring effect.

Mesh Screening Reactor와 결합된 A2O 공정의 처리효율에 관한 연구 (A Study on the treatment efficiency of A2O Process coupled with Mesh Screening Reactor)

  • Three Mesh Screenning Reactors (MSRs) were operated in three different modes to investigate the effect of the mesh opening size and the filtrate flux on the removal of particulate matters and the production of soluble organic matters. The mesh opening size was $82{\mu}m$ (Mode 1), $61{\mu}m$ (Mode 2) and $38{\mu}m$ (Mode 3), respectively, and each mode has three different filtrate flux; $0.47m^3/m^2/d$, $0.95m^3/m^2/d$ and $1.42m^3/m^2/d$, respectively. TSS removal efficiency of mode 1, 2, and 3 fed with 191 mgTSS/L was 27%, 36%, and 60%, respectively. The SCOD concentration of 91mg/L in influent for the mode 1, 2, and 3 increased to 117 mg/L, 127 mg/L, and 155 mg/L, respectively. For the all MSRs, there was no significant effect of filtrate flux on the removal of particulate matters and the production of soluble organic matters. However, the mesh opening size greatly affected the removal of particulate matters and the production of soluble organic matters in wastewater. Three parallel A2O processes consisting of anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic reactors maintaining mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) of 3,000 mg/L were operated to investigate the effectiveness of MSR on the removal efficiencies of the organic matters, nitrogen, and phosphorus; MSR influent was introduced to System 1 (183 mgTSS/L, 324 mgTCOD/L, 87 mgSCOD/L, 45.2 mgTKN/L, and 6.6 mgTP/L) and MSR efluent was introduced to System 2 and 3(72 mgTSS/L, 289 mgTCOD/L, 141 mgSCOD/L, 40.2 mgTKN/L, and 4.2 mgTP/L). HRTs of the anaerobic reactors in systems 1, 2 and 3 were 1 h, 1 h and 0.6 h, respectively and anoxic reactors were 2 h in all systems. HRTs of the aerobic reactors in systems 1, 2 and 3 were 5 h, 3 h and 3 h, respectively. TSS concentration in effluent of both system 2 and 3 is about 8 mg/L and lower than that of system 1 effluent. Despite higher TCOD loading and SCOD loading, both Systems 2 and 3 had a greater TCOD and SCOD removal efficiency at 91% and 92% than System 1 was at 88% and 82%, respectively. The nitrification efficiency for system 2 was greater than observed for System 1 (99% verses 97%). The denitrification efficiency for systems 1, 2 and 3 was 78%, 88% and 87%, respectively. System 2 and 3 showed about 12% higher TN removal efficiency than system 1 (85% verses 73%). The effluent TP concentration for system 2 was less than observed for system 1 and 3.

Assessing the Potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Spent Nuclear Fuel Management: A Review of the Generation IV Reactor Progress

  • The initial development plans for the six reactor designs, soon after the release of Generation IV International Forum (GIF) TRM in 2002, were characterized by high ambition [1]. Specifically, the sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) and very-high temperature reactor (VHTR) gained significant attention and were expected to reach the validation stage by the 2020s, with commercial viability projected for the 2030s. However, these projections have been unrealized because of various factors. The development of reactor designs by the GIF was supposed to be influenced by events such as the 2008 global financial crisis, 2011 Fukushima accident [2, 3], discovery of extensive shale oil reserves in the United States, and overly ambitious technological targets. Consequently, the momentum for VHTR development reduced significantly. In this context, the aims of this study were to compare and analyze the development progress of the six Gen IV reactor designs over the past 20 years, based on the GIF roadmaps published in 2002 and 2014. The primary focus was to examine the prospects for the reactor designs in relation to spent nuclear fuel burning in conjunction with small modular reactor (SMR), including molten salt reactor (MSR), which is expected to have spent nuclear fuel management potential.

신쥬꾸 스테이션 빌딩의 배수 재이용 설비

  • 이 빌딩은 JR신쥬꾸역에 인접한 상가빌딩으로 화장실 세정수는 우물물을 사용하고 있었으나 1972년부터 법규제에 의해 시수로 바꾸었다. 근년에 상하수도 요금이 올라서 배수 재이용 설비의 설치를 검토하면서 (1)경제효과를 얻을 수 있다. (2)2중배관$\cdot$지하수조 등 기존설비를 이용할 수 있다. (3)원배수는 주방폐수를 이용할 수 있는 것에 착안하여 산키공업(주)의 MSR시스템을 채용하였다. 1985년부터 실제 운전에 들어갔으며 유분이 많은 배수를 이용함에도 불구하고 중수는 고도의 수질을 얻을 수 있어서 화장실 세정수로 이용하였다. 또한 상하수도 요금 지불이 대폭적으로 내려가고 경제효과가 크다는 것이 확인 되었다. 이와같이 기존빌딩도 조건만 조정하면 배수 재이용 설비의 설치가 가능한 예로서 아래에 기술한다.
