  • Recent developments in MS-based glycomics and glycoproteomics have rapidly advanced the field and pushed the boundaries of glyco-analysis into new territories. This review will lay out current workflows and strategies for characterization of the glycoproteome, including (in order of increasing complexity and information content) preliminary site mapping, compositional glycan profiling, isomer-specific glycan profiling, glycosite-specific glycopeptide profiling, and finally, glycoproteomic profiling.

  • The number of matched peaks (NMP) is estimated as the spectral similarity measure in tandem mass spectral library searches of small molecules. In the high resolution mode, NMP provides the same reliable identification as in the case of a common dot-product function. Corresponding true positive rates are ($94{\pm}3$) % and ($96{\pm}3$) %, respectively.

  • The hydrolysis of penicillin G, carbenicillin and ampicillin in pure water at room temperature was studied by high pressure liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Hydrolysis of ampicillin did not occur under these conditions; however, penicillin G and carbenicillin were completely hydrolyzed after seven days. A short interpretation of this difference is proposed. The mass spectrometric behaviour, namely ESI response and fragmentation pathway, of hydrolyzed penicillin G and hydrolyzed carbenicillin have been also discussed.

  • Metabolomics has become an important research field with many areas of applications ranging from disease biomarker discovery to global biology systems study. A key step in metabolomics is to perform metabolome analysis to obtain quantitative information on metabolic changes among comparative samples. Mass spectrometry (MS) is widely used for highly sensitive detection of many different types of metabolites. In this review, we highlight some of the more commonly used MS techniques for metabolome analysis.

  • Pseudopodia are dynamic actin cytoskeleton-based membrane protrusions of cells that enable directional cell migration. Pseudopodia of cancer cells play key roles in cancer metastasis. Recent studies using pseudopodial subcellular fractionation methodologies combined with mass spectrometry-based proteomic profiling have provided insight into the pseudopodiome that control the protrusions of invasive metastatic cancer cells. This review highlights how to characterize the protein composition of pseudopodia and develop strategies to identify biomarkers or drug candidates that target reduction or prevention of metastatic cancer.

  • Atmospheric aerosols have become a major environmental concern because of their adverse effects on human health, air quality, and climate change. Over the last few decades, several mass spectrometry (MS)-based techniques have been developed and applied in the field of atmospheric aerosol research. Particularly, real-time measurement of ambient aerosols using an aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) has become one of the most powerful tools for aerosol chemistry. This review provides a brief description of AMS and its applications for understanding the physicochemical properties of atmospheric aerosols, as well as its sources and evolution processes.

  • Purpose: Multiple symmetric lipomatosis (MSL) is a relatively rare disorder characterized by presence of multiple, symmetric, nonencapsulated fat masses in face, neck, shoulder and other areas. There has been only a few cases reported in Korea. The main purpose of this research is to examine the Korean patients to see what kinds of special characteristics occurred due to this disease and to decide the proper treatment. Methods: A total of 16 patients were evaluated retrospectively. 5 patients were treated at our hospital. The other patients were reviewed from literature. We analyzed the biological characters of patients, location of fat deposit, morphologic characters of patients, clinical evidence of neuropathy, associated metabolic disorders and treatment modality. Results: All cases were male patient. The mean age of onset was 47.43 years. All patients were moderate to heavy alcoholics. The most common location of fat deposition was posterior neck and abdomen. In neurologic exam of 9 patients, 5 patients showed muscle weakness, tremor, pain and autonomic nerve dysfunction. In metabolic studies of 9 patients, total cholesterol values were higher in 1 patient. A glucose tolerance test was abnormal in 1 patient. In treatment modality, 14 patients were treated with surgical resection, 1 patient was treated with liposuction and surgical excision, 1 patient was treated only with liposuction. Conclusion: To treat MSL patients successfully, we should concentrate not only on the removal of the fatty tissue but also on neurologic abnormities, metabolic disorders and associated diseases.

  • The characteristics and burial ages of sand sediments on the Jiduri coast in Daechung-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon were investigated. Daecheong Island is the area where the characteristics of the rocky coast and sand coast are shown. Various studies have been conducted on the Okjukdong sand dune that appears in the north of the island. However, there has been no study on the sandy sedimentary topography of the Jiduri and Moraewul area in the south. The sandy sedimentary terrain of Jiduri is divided into sandy beaches, sand dunes and sand deposits along the slope including climbing dune. Overall, the depth of sandy sediments in Jiduri is not deep. The characteristics of sandy sediments and burial ages were investigated at an elevation of about 23 m above sea level at the back of Jiduli Beach and 46 m above sea level at the ridge line between Jiduri and Moraewol. From the Jiduri coast to the hillside behind, the average grain size decreases and the sorting becomes better as it moves from the intertidal zone to the beach and the foredune. This indicates the selective sand transport by the wind and can be judged by the terrain formed under the current sedimentation environment. The average grain size at the upper part of the section of JD-1 (elevation of about 23m MSL) was $1.6918{\varphi}$ of medium sand. The sorting was $0.4584{\varphi}$, skewness was -1.0491 and kurtosis was -1.2411, respectively. Particularly, the average particle size of the crosssection issomewhat uniform, but the color of the constituent material changes from brown to black. In the case of JD-2 (about 46 m MSL), the mean grain size of the section was $1.7943{\varphi}$, the sorting was 0.4931, the skewness was -1.1163, and the kurtosis was 1.2133. On the other hand, the brown and black layers of JD-1 exhibited a burial age of $0.1{\pm}0.0ka$ and the JD-2 had a burial age of $0.7{\pm}0.0ka$.
