  • In last several years, a number of volume localization techniques, such as ISIS, VSE, SPARS and STEAM etc., have been developed for the MR spectroscopy. These localizing techniques, however, require application of several RF pulses for the 3-D volume selection and suffer from T1 and T2 decays due to relatively long RF excitation time. In this paper, we propose a single-shot RF pulse localization technique to achieve the localized 3-D volume selection. This technique combines the cylindrical volume selection technique with a radial gradient coil with single-shot RF pulse and the oscillating selection gradient technique, so thai it minimizes the volume selection time. We report some experimental results obtained with the proposed method which appears promising for 3-D volume imaging and localized spectroscopy.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic prostate segmentation technique using image intensity and gradient information. Our method is composed of four steps. First, rays at regular intervals are generated. To minimize the effect of noise, the start and end positions of the ray are calculated. Second, the profiles on each ray are sorted based on the gradient. And priorities are applied to the sorted gradient in the profile. Third, boundary points are extracted by using gradient priority and intensity distribution. Finally, to reduce the error, the extracted boundary points are corrected by using B-spline interpolation. For accuracy evaluation, the average distance differences and overlapping region ratio between results of manual and automatic segmentations are calculated. As the experimental results, the average distance difference error and standard deviation were 1.09mm $\pm0.20mm$. And the overlapping region ratio was 92%.

  • This study has been conducted to compare two cargo handling systems on MR tanker and Panamax tanker. Submerged hydraulic cargo pumps with hydraulic power packs and frequency converter controlled electric deepwell pumps will be investigated and compared on all aspects of initial cost, installation, operation and maintenance. The result of investigation shows Electric Systems have less manufacturing costs, higher environmental friendliness and reliable operation compare to Hydraulic Systems. Furthermore, the present experimental data will provide important database for Electric Systems onboard new ships and practical and empirical guidelines are constructed for further determine the design of the Electric Systems.

  • The water proton relaxation rates increase linearly with concentrations of contrast agents, and could be expressed as a function of the concentrations. In this paper, we have investigated MR properties of two different contrast agents, $GdCl_3$ and $CoCl_2$. Relaxivity coefficients were calculated from individual contrast agent solutions, and used for predicting relaxation rates at mixtures of two contrast agents. From the experimental results, we have discussed the feasibility of constructing water solutions with the desired relaxation times using specific mixtures of contrast agents.

  • A new technique for reducing the susceptibility artifact in gradient echo imaging which uses a tailored RF pulse is proposed. It is applied to the case of imaging where artifacts and distortions arise due to the high local magnetic field inhomogeneity i. e., the susceptibility. The signal loss and void phenomena due to susceptibility in a voxel are studied and a correction method using a tailored RF pulse is proposed. Applications of this method in imaging are given and experimental results obtained using an human volunteer with a 2.0 T KAIS NMR system are presented.

  • This paper describes the extraction method for brain region using cellular automata from the brain MR image. In the first removing the background from the brain MR image, and then extracting the brain region by applying the cellular automata rule obtained from histogram analysis information. The results on some experimental results showed that the PSNR is 42.11(dB) on image quality and also the correlation factor is estimated 98.46%. The result of this study can be used as the auto-diagnostics system.

  • Transient magnetic resonance (MR) signal changes in the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC) arise from many different conditions, including encephalopathy or encephalitis caused by infection, seizures, metabolic derangements, and asphyxia. Few case reports exist on reversible SCC lesions associated with rotavirus infection. A benign convulsion with mild gastroenteritis (CwG) is frequently associated with rotaviral infections. This entity is characterized by normal laboratory findings, electroencephalogram, neuroimaging, and good prognosis. We report a case of a 2.5-year-old Korean girl with rotavirus-associated CwG demonstrating a reversible SCC lesion on diffusion-weighted MR images. She developed 2 episodes of brief generalized tonic-clonic seizure with mild acute gastroenteritis without any other neurologic abnormality. Stool test for rotavirus antigen was positive. Brain MRI done on the day of admission showed a linear high signal intensity and decreased apparent diffusion coefficient values on the SCC. The lesion completely disappeared on follow-up MRI 6 days later. The patient fully recovered without any sequelae.

  • This paper presents a novel approach for achieving both a tight DC voltage regulation and a power factor control by applying the Reaching Law Sliding Mode Control (RL-SMC) and the conventional Sliding Mode Control (SMC). Applying these strategies on a matrix rectifier (MR) can achieve a unity grid side power factor when the DC load changes widely and it can provide a ripple-free output voltage that is easily affected by distortions of the three-phase ac voltage supply. Furthermore, by employing the reaching law on the SMC can solve the chatting problem of the sliding motion. Comparative Matlab simulations and experimental verifications for these strategies have been presented and discussed in this paper. The results show that by applying the SMC and RL-SMC on a MR can achieve a unity grid side power factor and a regulated ripple-free DC output.

  • Investigations of regular and chaotic vibrations of the autoparametric pendulum absorber suspended on a nonlinear coil spring and a magnetorheological damper are presented in the paper. Application of a semi-active damper allows controlling the dangerous motion without stooping of system and additionally gives new possibilities for designers. The investigations are curried out close to the main parametric resonance. Obtained numerical and experimental results show that the semi-active suspension may reduce dangerous motion and it also allows to maintain the pendulum at a given attractor or to jump to another one. Moreover, the results show that, for some parameters, MR damping may transit to chaotic motions.
