  • This study is about a semi-active quarter car simulation method including a MR(magneto-rheological) damper. The MR damper was modeled as Spencer model that can capture nonlinear and hysteretic behavior. The parameters of the Spencer model were extracted from a random excitation test and optimum treatment of the test data. Then, a suspension control algorithm based on Sky-hook theory was applied for the quarter car simulation. Also, an experiment was dong using a quarter car simulator to confirm the simulation results with the Spencer MR damper model

  • This paper presents investigation of damping characteristics of squeeze mode type MR (magneto-Rheological) mount experimentally. Since damping property of the MR fluid is changed by variation of the applied magnetic field strength, squeeze mode type MR mount proposed in the study has variable damping characteristics according to the applied magnetic field strength. Impact and excitation tests were performed to investigate the dynamic properties of squeeze mode type MR mount. Responses of the mount were compared in proportion to the applied magnetic field strength. The experimental results show that the mount can effectively reduce vibration amplitude in a wide frequency range by changing the applied magnetic field strength.

  • This paper presents property of the squeeze mode type mount using Magneto-Rheological fluid (MR fluid). The mount can isolate multi-directional vibrations, and also effectively reduce the vibrations in a wide range of disturbance frequency by controling the applied magnetic field. The shape of the mount is the same that of squeeze film damper. In the present work, the performance of this mount was experimentally investigated according to changing the magnetic field strength.   • Seismic response control method of the bridge structures with semi-active control device, i.e., magneto-rheological (MR) damper, is studied in this paper. Design of various kinds of clipped optimal controller and fuzzy controller are suggested as a semi-active control algorithm. For determining the control force of MR damper, clipped optimal control method adopts bi-state approach, but the fuzzy control method continuously quantifies input currents through fuzzy inference mechanism to finely modulate the damper force. To investigate the performances of the suggested control techniques, numerical simulations of a multi-span continuous bridge system subjected to various earthquakes are performed, and their performances are compared with each other. From the comparison of results, it is shown that the fuzzy control system can provide well-balanced control force between girder and pier in the view point of structural safety and stability and be quite effective in reducing both girder and pier displacements over the existing control method.

  • This paper provides a new concept of the controllable micro damper using MR(Magneto Rheological)fluids. The damper is composed of four layers which are fabricated by wet etching. The Process of the fabrication is explained and the change of damping property is experimentally shown. Since the damping force is controllable by the applied magnetic field the vibration can be effectively absorbed.

  • In this paper, an assistive device for a knee joint to help a disabled person to stand up by supporting power is presented. The device is designed and controlled by using damping characteristics of the MR (Magneto-Rheological) damper. The MR damper helps the person to sit slowly and safely. A DC motor supports muscle power in the case of standing motion. Thus the device helps the disabled person to sit down and stand up. Through the experiments, it is feasible that an assistive device can help the disabled person to standup according to the foot pressure change.

  • Most washing machines are now produced as a drum-type, where a washing drum mounted on a suspension system with springs and dampers, to minimize the transmittance of the vibration from the drum to the frame. A low-cost MR damper, using magneto-rheological fluids, can produce variable damping forces by changing the current values in the magnetic coil. Experimental results show the comparison of the vibration attenuation performances between two different dampers. One test set-up uses a passive damper and another one uses a MR fluid damper. The test results showed that the vibration amplitude of the washing machine with the MR damper is much smaller than the case with the passive damper.

  • Magneto-rheological fluids and magneto-strictive materials are of the well-known smart materials which are used to control and reduce the vibrations of the structures. Vibration analysis of a smart annular three-layered plate is provided in this work. MR fluids are used as the core's material type and the face sheets are made from MS materials and is assumed they are fully bonded to each other. The structure is rested on visco-Pasternak foundation and also is subjected to a transverse magnetic field. The governing motion equations are derived based on CPT and employing Hamilton's principle and are solved via GDQ as a numerical method for various boundary conditions. Effect of different parameters on the results are considered and discussed in detail. One of the salient features of this work is the consideration of MR fluids as the core, MS materials as the faces, and all of them under magnetic field. The outcomes of this study may be led to design and create smart structures such as sensors, actuators and also dampers.

Effect of Magnetic Force on Rheological and Compressive Properties of Magneto-Rheological Rubber Composites with Iron Particle and Carbon Nanotubes (자기력이 철 분말 및 탄소나노튜브 강화 자기유동 고무 복합재료의 유동 및 압축 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • An orthotropic magneto-rheological rubber composite (MRRC) based on a general-purpose rubber can be manufactured by using an electromagnetic device during the curing processes of rubber mixtures. The magnetic transmissivity of MRRCs increases with the iron particle (IP) content, and that of aligned MRRCs with a 2-T magnetic field is 1.8 to 2 times higher as compared to that of randomly dispersed MRRCs. The effect of a 2-T magnetic field on carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced MRRC has been identified clearly, and the magnetic transmissivity is found to be 3.7%. The compressive stress of MRRC (IP 90 + CNT 5, 2 T alignment) under a magnetic field of 0.49 T is 2.1 times higher as compared to that of the matrix. The MR effect of MRRC increases with the IP content, and that of aligned MRRC with the IP 90 and 2 T magnetic field is 20.4%. It is confirmed that the magnetic field when making the specimen and when performing the compression test greatly impacts the compression characteristics.
