In general, the high cost, long time, and complex steps are required in the design and implementation of MPSoC(Multi-Processor System on a Chip), therefore a platform is used to test the functionality and performance of IPs(Intellectual Properties). In this paper, we study a platform architecture to verify IPs based on Interconnect Network among processors, and show that the MPSoC platform gives better performance than a single processor for an application program.
Since embedded software is very dependent for target hardware architecture, characteristics of the platform must be considered when designing the software. Furthermore, MPSoCs consists of heterogeneous hardware components that are specified in micro level. Thus mapping of embedded software for MPSoCs should be considered the characteristics. In this paper, we provide an approach to automatic mapping PIM (Platform Independent Model) of an embedded software to PSM(Platform Specific Model) for MPSoC(Multi Processor System On Chip) and verify its effectiveness with simulation. In the proposed approach, tasks are derived from an object oriented model based on the UML (Unified Modeling Language). And then the types of the derived tasks are identified. With the identified types and inter relationship between tasks, the tasks are assigned to appropriate heterogeneous hardware components. We expect that the approach improve accuracy of the assigning and concurrency of the deployed software.

Optimization of interconnects among processors and memories becomes important as multiple processors and memories can be integrated on a Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC). Since the optimal interconnection architecture is usually dependent on the applications, systematic design methodology for various data transfer requirements is necessary. In this paper, we focus on bus interconnection for MPSoC applications which use 4 ~ 16 processors. We propose a new systematic bus design methodology under performance constraints using Single Arbitration Multiple Bus Accesses (SAMBA) style bus architectures. Optimized bus architecture is found to satisfy performance constraints for a single or multiple applications. When compared to the unoptimized architecture, our method can reduce the bus switch logic circuits significantly (by more than 50% sometimes). Furthermore, low cost bus architectures can be found to satisfy the performance constraints for multiple applications.

In this paper, we presents a hybrid on-chip bus architecture based on the AMBA 3.0 AXI protocol for MPSoC with high performance and low power. Among AXI channels, data channels with a lot of traffic are designed by crossbar-switch architecture for massively parallel processing. On the other hand, addressing and write-response channels having a few of traffic is handled by shared-bus architecture due to the overheads of (areas, interconnection wires and power consumption) reduction. In experiments, the comparisons are carried out in terms of time, space and power domains for the verification of proposed hybrid on-chip bus architecture. For $16{\times}16$ bus configuration, the hybrid on-chip bus architecture has almost similar performance in time domain with respect to crossbar on-chip bus architecture, as the masters's latency is differenced about 9% and the total execution time is only about 4%. Furthermore, the hybrid on-chip bus architecture is very effective on the overhead reduction, such as it reduced about 47% of areas, and about 52% of interconnection wires, as well as about 66% of dynamic power consumption. Thus, the presented hybrid on-chip bus architecture is shown to be very effective for the MPSoC interconnection design aiming at high performance and low power.
Bus splitting technique reduces bus energy by placing modules with frequent communications closely and using necessary bus segments in communications. But, previous bus splitting techniques can not be used in MPSoC platform, because it uses cache coherency protocol and all processors should be able to see the bus transactions. In this paper, we propose a bus splitting technique for MPSoC platform to reduce bus energy. The proposed technique divides a bus into several bus segments, some for private memory and others for shared memory. So, it minimizes the bus energy consumed in private memory accesses without producing cache coherency problem. We also propose a task allocation technique considering cache coherency protocol. It allocates tasks into processors according to the numbers of bus transactions and cache coherence protocol, and reduces the bus energy consumption during shared memory references. The experimental results from simulations say the bus splitting technique reduces maximal 83% of the bus energy consumption by private memory accesses. Also they show the task allocation technique reduces maximal 30% of bus energy consumed in shared memory references. We can expect the bus splitting technique and the task allocation technique can be used in multiprocessor platforms to reduce bus energy without interference with cache coherency protocol.

In this paper, we propose a novel hardware MPI(Message Passing Interface) unit which supports message passing in multiprocessor system which use distributed memory architecture. MPI Hardware unit processes data synchronization, transmission and completion, and it supports processor non-blocking operation so it reduces overhead according to synchronization. Additionally, MPI hardware unit combines ready entry, request entry, reserve entry which save and manage the synchronized messages and performs the multiple outstanding issue and out of order completion. According to BFM(Bus Functional Model) simulation result, the performance is increased by 25% on many to many communication. After we designed MPI unit using HDL, with synopsys design compiler we synthesized, and for synthesis library we used MagnaChip $0.18{\mu}m$. And then we making prototype chip. The proposed message transmission interface hardware shows high performance for its increase in size. Thus, as we consider low-cost design and scalability, MPI hardware unit is useful in increasing overall performance of embedded MPSoC(Multi-Processor System-on-Chip).
