This study examined the effects of estimation activities on children's operation and measurement abilities. Subjects were 60 five-year-old children. This experiment used the untreated control group design with pretest and posttest. Instruments used to collect data were the Number and Operation and Measurement tests part of the Test of Mathematics Ability for Young Children (TMAYC) developed by Hong, Lee and Chung (2006). ANCOVA was employed for statistical analysis. Results of the posttest showed that children in the experimental group scored significantly higher on children's operation and measurement abilities than the control group. Results imply that an estimation program can be an effective teaching model for improving children's operation and measurement abilities.
This study examines how the project approach utilizing beans as the subject matter influences young children's scientific research capabilities and scientific attitudes. This examination ultimately aims at developing effective teaching methods and programs that can promote children's scientific research capabilities and scientific attitudes. Thirty six children at H kindergarten in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do were selected as subjects of this study. The children aged five were divided into an experiment group and a comparison group, with eighteen for each group. Before the experiment, a pre-test was conducted on the children's scientific research capabilities and scientific attitudes. The pre-test results were subject to a t test to identify whether there were differences between the two groups in age as well as the levels of scientific research capabilities and attitudes. A post-test was also conducted to determine the differences between the two groups in these categories. These results have led to the conclusion that the project approach utilizing beans as the subject matter has a positive impact on improving young children's scientific research capabilities and scientific attitudes.
Purpose: This study was done to examine the importance of health promotion behavior for infants and toddlers as perceived by mothers of children in early childhood, and graduate students in nursing and to provide information for health promotion in early childhood. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey research study. The participants were 91 mothers of children in early childhood, and 115 graduate students in nursing. Results: The comparisons showed that graduate students in nursing reported higher perception of the importance health promotion behavior for infants and toddlers than did the mothers. In health promotion behavior, the highest score was in the category of safety. Conclusion: Providing information by nurses is necessary to promote health promotion behavior for mothers of children in early childhood. Therefore, it is important for healthcare professionals to develop effective programs for these mothers who want to promote good health promotion behavior in their children.

The objective of this study is to assess the effect of art activities of young children by utilizing the art therapy techniques on the daily stress and social competence of the young children. Out of children at the age of 5 in two classes of H kindergarten in P city, the study of 25 and controlling group of 25 are allocated to make a total number of 50 study objects. After pretests on the surveyed and controlling groups, 2-3times a week, totaling 12times of experimental treatments are made by selecting the art works of easy application on the education fields for the young children. The outcome of this study is as follow. First, the surveyed group participating in the art activities based on art therapy techniques gets lower points than the controlling group in criticism-attacking circumstance, anxious-frustrated circumstance, pride-deteriorated situation and the general daily stress. Second, the surveyed group participating in the art activities based on art therapy techniques gets higher points than the controlling group in positive-social activities, anxious-contracted activities, angry-aggressive activities and the general social competency.
This study aims to explain the effect of mother's child rearing behavior on aggression of young children and to verify the mediating effect of self-control between two variables. For the purpose, 1,524 children who fit this study among children aged 5 through 7th year of the Korean Children's Panel were selected. The data were analyzed by using the hierarchical regression method and the Sobel test. The main findings are as follows. First, the mother's warmth of rearing behavior was shown to decrease aggression of children, while mother's control of rearing behavior had no influence their aggression. Second, It was shown that the self-control of young children had a negative effect on their aggression. Third, self-control was shown to have a partial mediating effect in the relationship between the mother's warmth of rearing behavior and aggression of children. Accordingly, various programs to reduce the aggression of young children were suggested and an alternative plan was proposed to be applied to child care sites.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare psychosocial adjustment in children aged 4-11 years with cancer between on and off treatment. Method: The data was collected from parents of children with cancer through interviews with structured questionnaire at the pediatric outpatient department and inpatient ward of one university hospital located in Seoul. The instrument were the Child Behavior Check List(CBCL) developed by Achenbach(1991) and revised to standardize for Korean children by Oh et al(1997). Result: Total behavior problem score for children on treatment was greater than the score off treatment but there was no significant difference. Children on treatment reported higher levels of depression/anxiety, withdrawal, internalizing scores than children off treatment. Social competence score of children off treatment was greater than the score on treatment and the difference of school performance score of children between on and off treatment was not significant. The scores on the withdrawal, somatic complaints, social immaturity, internalizing scales in the cancer group including both on and off treatment was greater than normative findings in the general population. The scores on the school competence of children off treatment were lower than the norms for healthy children. Conclusion: Findings from this study support the importance of nursing interventions to facilitate the adjustment of children with cancer both on and off therapy.
Multi-sensory systems, including the visual, somatosensory, and vestibular ones, are involved in maintaining standing balance. The organization of these sensory systems is as important as the efficiency of each individual system in maintaining optimal balance. The purpose of the present experiment was to investigate the developmental changes in static standing balance and sensory organization under altered sensory conditions. This study involved 64 children (from 4 to 15 years of age) and 17 young adults. The children were divided into four age groups: 4~6, 7~9, 10~12, and 13~15 years. Static standing balance was assessed with the one-leg standing test under four different sensory conditions: the children stood on a firm surface with (1) eyes open or (2) closed, and they stood on a foam surface with eyes (3) open or (4) closed. In balancing ability, the age groups exhibited significant differences. The function of sensory organization for balance control was poorer for the children than for the young adults. The functional efficiency of the somatosensory system of the children aged 7~9 years was at the young adults' level, and the visual function of the children aged 10~12 years had also reached the young adults' level. However, the functional efficiency of the vestibular system of children was significantly lower than that of the young adults, even at the age of 15 years. This may indicate that sensory organization and standing balance are still developing after the age of 15 years.

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a safety education program for children in early childhood. The program was developed to enhance young children's disaster preventing ability, especially preparing urban inundation. The program consists of nine 30-minute sessions. 26 4-year-olds (10 boys and 16 girls) participated in this program. The effect of this program was evaluated by preschool children's safety knowledge and problem solving ability for preventing urban inundation. Results showed that there was a significant experimental effect for safety knowledge. Experimental children showed higher scores of safety knowledge than control group. Also there was a significant experimental effect for safety problem solving ability. Experimental children showed higher scores of safety problem solving ability than control group. The results of program evaluation revealed that this program was helpful for preparing young children for urban inundation.
Participants in this study of the effect of story making activity on the language expression and creativity of young children were all forty 5-year-old children in a child-care facility. The experimental group read the fantasy picture book and engaged in story making activity; the control group read the same fantasy picture books the experimental group but didn't have any story making activity. Experimental treatments were given twice a week for 6 weeks. Data were analyzed by MANCOVA using scores of the pre-test as covariance. Differences were found between experimental and control groups in language expression and creativity showing that story making activity using the fantasy picture book was more effective than just reading without story making activity.
