  • In this paper, we proposed a fast multi-resolution motion estimation(MRME) algorithm. This algorithm exploits the half-pixel accuracy motion estimation(HPAME) for exact motion vectors in the baseband and block classification for the reduction of bit amounts and computational loads. Generally, as the motion vector in the baseband are used as initial motion vector in the high frequency subbands, it has crucial effect on quality of the motion compensated image. For this reason, we exploit HPAME in the motion estimation for the baseband. But HPAME requires additional bit and computational loads so that we use block classification for the selective motion estimation in the high frequency subbands to compensate these problems. In result, we could reduce the bit rate and computational load at the similar image quality with conventional MRME. The superiority of the proposed algorithm was confirmed by the computer simulation.

  • In this paper, SA (shape adaptive)-DCT is implemented using a datapath with 4 MACs (multiplication & accumulator). DCT is a well-known bottleneck of real-time video compression using MPEG-like schemes. High-speed pipelined MACs presented here implement real-time DCT. A datapath in this paper executes DCT/IDCT algorithms for QCIF 15fps(frame per second), maximum rate of VLBV(very low bitrte video) in MPEG-4. A 32bit accumulator in a MAC prevents distortion caused by fixed-point process. It can be applied to various operations such as ME (motion estimation) and MC(motion compensation) with a absolutor and a halfer.

  • We propose a new frame rate up-conversion algorithm for high quality video. In the proposed scheme bidirectional motion estimation (ME) is performed to construct the motion vector. (MV) field for the frame to be interpolated. Unlike conventional motion-compensated interpolation (MCI) algorithms, the proposed technique does not produce any overlapped pixel and hole region in the interpolated frame, and thus can utilize the overlapped block motion compensation technique to reduce the blocking artifacts. The proposed algoritm is very simple to implement on consumer products when compared to conventional MCI methods. Computer simulation shows a high visual performance of the proposed frame rate up-conversion algorithm.

  • This paper presents a high performance 2D PE architecture for H.264 Motion Estimation(ME). While existing 2D PE architectures reuse the overlapped data of adjacent search windows scanned in 1 or 3-way, the new architecture scan adjacent windows and multiple paths instead of single raster and zigzag scanning of adjacent windows in 4 way(up,down, left, right). By reducing the redundant access factor by 1.4, the new 4-way search window improve the memory bandwidth by 70-58% compared with 1/3-way search window. With Altera Stratix-III implementation, the high performance 2D PE architecture deals with SD ($720{\times}480$) video of 2 reference frame, $48{\times}48$ search area and $16{\times}16$ macroblock by 30fps at 97.1MHz.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast Motion Estimation (ME) algorithm for low computational complexity based on spatial correlations. The proposed algorithm uses the motion vector of neighboring blocks, to decide the location of initial searching point. The number of searching point decreases by changing the location of initial searching point. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces searching points about $7{\sim}13%$ and increases PSNR about $0.1{\sim}0.5$(dB) compared with conventional algorithm.

  • In the new video coding standard H.264/AVC, motion estimation (ME) is allowed to search multiple reference frames for improve the rate-distortion performance. The complexity of multi-frame motion estimation increases linearly with the number of used reference frame. However, the distortion gain given by each reference frame varies with the video sequence, and it is not efficient to search through all the candidate frames. In this paper, we propose a fast mult-frame selection method using all zero coefficient block (AZCB) prediction and sum of difference (SAD) of neighbor block. Simulation results show that the speed of the proposed algorithm is up to two times faster than exhaustive search of multiple reference frames with similar quality and bit-rate.

  • Methylmercury (MeHg) is an environmental pollutant with neurotoxic effects on the central nervous system. The major exposure route of MeHg to humans is via consumption of fish and shellfish which accumulate the chemical through the food web in an aquatic environment. Hair mercury level is an excellent marker for MeHg exposure. We have been conducting a survey on hair mercury contents among general populations from 14 districts to estimate the current Japanese MeHg exposure level. Total mercury levels of all hair samples collected (12923 in total) were analyzed by the oxygen combustion-gold amalgamation method using an atomic absorption mercury detector. Multiple regression analysis revealed that mercury levels were significantly correlated with several covariates, such as sex, age, the amount of daily intake of total fish/shellfish, a preference for certain fish such as tuna or bonito, and artificial waving. The geometric means for the population without artificial waving were 2.47 and 1.65 ${\mu}g/g$ for males (n = 5623) and females (n = 3470), respectively. Hair mercury levels varied with age, and the variations were more significant in males. Since the difference between sexes was not evident at younger ages, some hormonal control might also be involved in the mercury uptake by human hair. The average mercury levels in our hair samples varied among the sampling districts. Tuna is a major carnivorous fish with high mercury accumulations that is often consumed in Japan. The amount of fish consumption and the preference rate far tuna would appear to be responsible far the regional variation in hair mercury levels in Japan. Recently, a provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) of MeHg was revised by 61st JECFA to 1.6 ${\mu}g/kg/week$, which was about half that of the Japanese standard, and corresponded to a hair level of 2.2 ppm. The distribution of hair mercury levels in Japanese populations in the present study indicated that 25% of the Japanese females of child-bearing age were estimated to be exposed to MeHg over the PTWI level. This would reflect the high Japanese consumption of marine products. However, not only mercury contamination, but also the nutritional benefit may have to be considered when discussing the risk involved in the current level of fish and shellfish consumption in Japan.

  • In this paper, Low Computational Adaptive Expanded Block Search Motion Estimation Method is proposed. Proposed method classifies ME blocks as Average Motion Block(AMB) and Local Motion Block(LMB) according to correlation of reference frame. It could reduce the computational complexity with performing Modified Fast Search(MFS). And accuracy of MV is also increased by 4 sub-blocks on LMB and Block Expansion(BE). The experimental results show that the proposed method has better performance that increased 1.8dB than Diamond Search and 0.6dB than Full Search with 7.5 % computation of Full Search. The proposed method could be applied to video compression and Frame Rate Conversion(FRC).
