Improved mevinolic acid (MA) production by the immobilized cells, and the establishment of on-line measurement system for fermentation parameters using vent gas analyzer

  • Mevinolic acid (MA), a secondary metabolite produced by a filamentous fungus Aspergillus terreus, is acidic form of lovastatin which has been identified as a powerful cholesterol-lowering agent in humans. When immobilized cell culture was performed, MA production was about 5.3-fold higher than the parallel suspended cell culture. Although the immobilized cells proliferated slowly during exponential in comparison with the suspended cells, oxygen uptake rate and oxygen mass transfer coefficient of the immobilized cell culture were about 1.3- and 2.5- fold higher respectively than those of the parallel suspended cell culture. From these results, it was concluded that MA biosynthesis was closely dependent on the cell growth rate, morphology and oxygen availability.

Plasmon-enhanced Infrared Spectroscopy Based on Metasurface Absorber with Vertical Nanogap

  • In this study, we introduce a sensing platform based on a plasmonic metasurface absorber (MA) with a vertical nanogap for the ultrasensitive detection of monolayer molecules. The vertical nanogap of the MA, where the extremely high near-field is uniformly distributed and exposed to the external environment, is formed by an under-cut structure between a metallic cross nanoantenna and the mirror layer. The accessible sensing area and the enhanced near-field of the MA further enhance the sensitivity of surface-enhanced infrared absorption for the target molecule of 1-octadecanethiol. To provide strong coupling between the molecular vibrations and plasmonic resonance, the design parameters of the MA with a vertical nanogap are numerically designed.

Digital engineering models for prefabricated bridge piers

  • Data-driven engineering is crucial for information delivery between design, fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of prefabricated structures. Design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) is a critical methodology for prefabricated bridge structures. In this study, a novel concept of digital engineering model that combined existing knowledge of DfMA with object-oriented parametric modeling technologies was developed. Three-dimensional (3D) geometry models and their data models for each phase of a construction project were defined for information delivery. Digital design models were used for conceptual design, including aesthetic consideration and possible variation during fabrication and assembly. The seismic performance of a bridge pier was evaluated by linking the design parameters to the calculated moment-curvature curves. Control parameters were selected to consider the tolerance control and revision of the digital models. Digitalized fabrication of the prefabricated members was realized using the digital fabrication model with G-code for a concrete printer or a robot. The fabrication error was evaluated and the design digital models were updated. The revised fabrication models were used in the preassembly simulation to guarantee constructability. For the maintenance of the bridge, the as-built information was defined for the prefabricated bridge piers. The results of this process revealed that data-driven information delivery is crucial for lifecycle management of prefabricated bridge piers.

  • This paper calculates the band structure of the GaAs/(Al,Ga) As semiconductor superlttice with the interface3 grading, in consideration of different effective masses in each region. Including the effective masses, superlattice period, well and barrier widths, and the interface, the dispersion relation is derived, and the effects that the above parameters affect the subband (or miniband) structure of the superlattice and effective energy gap are investigated. It is particularly found that this case(ma<>mb<>mc) is significantly different from the same effective mass case(ma<>mb<>mc).

  • The cure characteristics of three kinds of naphthalene type epoxy resins(NET-OH, NET-MA, NET-Epoxy) with a 2-methyl imidazole(2MI) catalyst were investigated for preparing sheet epoxy molding compound(SEMC) for wafer level package(WLP) applications, comparing with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A(DGEBA) and 1,6-naphthalenediol diglycidyl ether(NE-16) epoxy resin. The cure kinetics of these systems were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry with an isothermal approach, and the kinetic parameters of all systems were reported in generalized kinetic equations with diffusion effects. The NET-OH epoxy resin represented an n-th order cure mechanism as like NE-16 and DGEBA epoxy resins, however, the NET-MA and NET-Epoxy resins showed an autocatalytic cure mechanism. The NET-OH and NET-Epoxy resins showed higher cure conversion rates than DGEBA and NE-16 epoxy resins, however, the lowest cure conversion rates can be seen in the NET-MA epoxy resin. Although the NETEpoxy and NET-MA epoxy resins represented higher cure reaction conversions comparing with DGEBA and NE-16 resins, the NET-OH showed the lowest cure reaction conversions. It can be figured out by kinetic parameter analysis that the lowest cure conversion rates of the NET-MA epoxy resin are caused by lower collision frequency factor, and the lowest cure reaction conversions of the NET-OH are due to the earlier network structures formation according to lowest critical cure conversion.

The Effects of Chu-ma Therapy on Decreasing Blood Pressure in Essential Hypertension (추마요법이 본태성 고혈압 환자의 혈압하강에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Chu-ma therapy and to suggest that the therapy is an effective nursing intervention tool to reduce blood pressure. The research design employed was the non-synchronized research method with non- equivalent control group. A total of 30 people with essential hypertension, who were from forty to sixty five years old, participated in the study. The Chu-ma therapy was administered by every day for ten or fifteen minutes for eight weeks from 19, April to 13, June in 1999. In order to evaluate the effects of Chu-ma therapy, blood pressure of the two groups were measured once a week, and physiological parameters (epinephrine, norepinephrine, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides) were measured before and after the treatment. Collected data was analyzed by SAS package. The results of this study can be summarized as follows : 1) There were significant decrease in systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure in the experimental group. 2) There were no significant changes in epinephrine, norepinephrine of the two groups. 3) There were significant decrease in total cholesterol and triglycerides, and HDL- cholesterol increased significantly in the experimental group. 4) The effect of Chu-ma therapy on the measured time on the blood pressure in experimental group was as follows: Both of systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly decreased after 5weeks. The result proved that Chu-ma therapy is an effective nursing intervention tool for clients with essential hypertenion. However further research is still necessary to compare the effect with the different periods and number of times for Chu-ma therapy.

Determination of methamphetamine and amphetamine enantiomers in human urine by chiral stationary phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

  • Methamphetamine (MA) is currently the most abused illicit drug in Korea and its major metabolite is amphetamine (AP). As MA exist as two enantiomers with the different pharmacological properties, it is necessary to determine their respective amounts in a sample. Thus a chiral stationary phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) method was developed for identification and quantification of d-MA, l-MA, d-AP, and l-AP in human urine. Urine sample ($200{\mu}L$) was diluted with pure water and purified using solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge. A $5-{\mu}L$ aliquot of SPE treated sample solution was injected into LC-MS/MS system. Chiral separation was carried out on the Astec Chirobiotic V2 column with an isocratic elution for each enantiomer. Identification and quantification of enantiomeric MA and AP was performed using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) detection mode. Linear regression with a $1/x^2$ as the weighting factor was applied to generate a calibration curve. The linear ranges were 25-1000 ng/mL for all compounds. The intra- and inter-day precisions were within 3.6 %, while the intra- and inter-day accuracies ranged from -5.4 % to 11.8 %. The limits of detection were 2.5 ng/mL (d-MA), 3.5 ng/mL (l-MA), 7.5 ng/mL (d-AP), and 7.5 ng/mL (l-AP). Method validation parameters such as selectivity, matrix effect, and stability were evaluated and met acceptance criteria. The applicability of the method was tested by the analysis of genuine forensic urine samples from drug abusers. d-MA is the most common compound found in urine and mainly used by abusers.

  • In this paper, overdetermined method is used for high resolution spectral estimation in case of short data record length. To reduce the computational effort and to obtain recursive form of estimation algorithm, we modify data matrix to have near-Toeplitz structure. Then, new recursive algorithm is derived in the form of fast Kalman algorithm. Two stage procedure is used for the estimation of ARMA parameters. First AR parameters are estimated by using overdetermined modified Yule-walker equation, and then MA parameters are implicitly estimated by estimating numerator spectral coefficients(NS).

And a new recursive AR parameter estimation is derived in the form of fast algorithm. For ARMA spectral estimation, two stage procedure is used in estimating ARMA parameters. First AR parameters are estimated by using the modified Yule-Walker equations, and then MA parameters are implicitly estimated by estimating numerator spectral(NS) coefficients.

Preparation and Characteristics of P(AN-co-MA) Membrane Imprinted with Lysozyme Molecules (라이소자임 분자각인 P(AN-co-MA) 막의 제조와 특성)

  • Molecularly imprinted membrane (MIM) is a porous polymer membrane incorporating with the molecular recognizing sites. In this study, the supporting P(AN-co-MA) asymmetric membrane was prepared by nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. And then, MIM with lysozyme template sites was prepared using the surface imprinting method on the P(AN-co-MA) asymmetric membrane introducing a photoactive iniferter and then photo-grafting. The P(AN-co-MA) asymmetric membrane was modified with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane and dithiocarbamate as a photoactive iniferter. To prepare a lysozyme imprinted membrane, the modified P(AN-co-MA) membrane was copolymerized with acrylamide as a functional momomer, N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinker and lysozyme as a template in the UV irradiation environment. The lysozyme imprinted MIM was analyzed by using SEM, FT-IR and EDS measurements. Its results confirm that all the P(AN-co-MA) membranes have an asymmetric structure and the iniferter group is successfully introduced on the membrane surface. The process parameters were adjusted to obtain MIM having the excellent lysozyme adsorption. The maximum lysozyme adsorption capacity reaches at 2.7 mg/g, which is 13 times higher than that of the non imprinted membrane (NIM). The permselective membrane filtration experiments of ovalbumin to lysozyme show that the P(AN-co-MA) MIM preferentially bounds a greater amount of lysozyme.
