  • A 3-dimensional model of curved steel box girder bridges without diaphragm was presented. This model yielded results that were consistent with those of the parameter analysis using the BEF and Ritz methods. Se veralmodels with diaphragms were analyzed to estimate the appropriate diaphragm spacing. In case of 50m span, models A-10, A-20, A-30, B-10, B-20, and B-30 were found to have 5(8.3m), 7(6.25m), 8(5.5m), 4(10m), 6(7.1m), and 7(6.25m) diaphragms, respectively. In addition, a formula that presents the ratio of distortional stress to bending stresswas created from the results of the 3-dimensional FEM model analysis.

  • The surface chemical properties of aqueous kaolinite and halloysite were studied using a potentiometric titration experiment and a computer program FITEQL3.2. Among the surface complexation models a constant capacitance model was selected for this study. The 2 sites - 3 p $K_{a}$ s model, in which the surfaces were assumed to have tetrahedral and octahedral sites, was reasonable for the description of the experimental data. The surface charges of both minerals were negative above pH of 4. The higher the pH, the lower the proton surface charge densities of both minerals. The ≡ $SiO^{[-10]}$ site played an important role in cation adsorption in acid and neutral pH range; whereas the ≡ Al $O^{[-10]}$ site was in an alkaline pH range. The optimized intrinsic constants of kaolinite, p $K_{a2(Si)}$$^{int}$, p $K_{al(Al)}$$^{int}$ and p $K_{a2(Al)}$$^{int}$ were 4.436, 4.564, and 8.461 respectively, and those of halloysite were 7.852, 3.885, and 7.084, respectively. The total Si and Al surface sites concentrations of kaolinite were 0.215 and 0.148 mM, and those of halloysite were 0.357 and 0.246 mM. The ratio of Si and Al surface site densities ([≡SiOH]:[≡AlOH]) of both minerals was 1 : 0.69. The total surface site density of kaolinite, 3.774 sites/n $m^2$, was 1.6 times larger than that of halloysite, 2.292 sites/n $m^2$./TEX>.

  • Tidal computations of $M_2,\;S_2,\; K_1$ and $O_1$ constituents in the northeast Asian sea are presented by blending the Topex/Poseidon (T/P) altimeter data into a hydrodynamic model with $5'{\times}5'$ resolution. A series of sensitivity experiments on a weighting factor, which is the control parameter in the blending method, are carried out using $M_2$ constituent. The weighting factor is set to be in inverse proportion to the square root of water depth to reduce noises which could occur in data-assimilative model by blending T/P data. Model results obtained by blending the T/P-derived $M_2,\;S_2,\; K_1$ and $O_1$ constituents simultaneously are compared with all T/P-track tidal data; Average values of amplitude and phase errors are close to zero. Standard deviations of amplitude and phase errors are approximately 2 cm and less than 10 degrees respectively. The data-assimilative model results show a quite good agreement with T/P-derived tidal data, particularly in shallow water region (h<250m). In deep water regions, T/P-derived tidal data show unreasonable spatial variations in amplitude and phase. The data-assimilative model results differ from T/P-derived data, but are improved to show reasonable spatial variations in amplitude and phase. In addition, the T/P-blended model results are in good agreement with coastal tide gauge data which are not blended into the model.

  • We designed the optimal device parameters of the retrograde well and the gettering layer(buried layer) using the high energy ion implantation for the next generation of CMOS struoture and proposed two models and simulated these models with Athena and Atlas, Silvaco Co. We obtained trigger currents which is more than 600 ${\mu}A/{\mu}m$ when the structure has been combined the gettering layer and the retrograde well. And the second model(twin retrograde well) was obtained that holdingcurrents were over 2500${\mu}A/{\mu}m$. As results, the more heavier dose, the more improved the latch-up immunity. The n'-p' spacing was fixed a 2${\mu}m$ in both models.

  • The Thomsen-Haskell method was used to determine sensitivities of the Rayleigh-wave phase velocities and spectral amplitude of vertical ground motion to insertion of a single velocity-anomaly layer into overburden underlain by a basement. The reference model comprised a 9-m thick overburden with shear-wave velocity (${\nu}_s$ of 300 m/s above a half-space with ${\nu}_s$ = 1000 m/s. The inserted layer, with a velocity of 150, 225, 375, or 450 m/s and a thickness of 1, 2, or 3 m, was placed at depths increasing from the surface in increments of 1 m. Phase velocities were computed for frequencies of 4 to 30 Hz. For inserted layer models, we placed an anomalous layer with thickness of 1 ~ 3 m, shear-wave velocity of 150 ~ 450 m/s, and at depths of 0 ~ 8 m in the overburden. The frequency range of 8 ~ 20 Hz were the most sensitive to the difference of $C_R$ between the inserted and reference models (${\Delta}C_R$) for h = 1 m and the frequency range got wide as h increased. For all of the models, the spectral amplitudes of the fundamental mode exceeded those of the $1^{st}$-higher mode except at frequencies just above the low-frequency cutoff of the $1^{st}$-higher mode.

  • Smoke grenade is the most primary counteract of tank for its survival against threats, therefore a number of related researches and developments of M&S are being conducted. In this research, a vehicle-launched smoke grenade model is developed, that covers the essential engineering-level parameters, and also is applicable to engagement-level simulations because of its unheavy computational load. First of all, input parameters of the model were determined to include the principal factors from engineering to engagement level. In the model, smoke and LOS are modeled as simple figures, a disk and a line, so that the computational load is not as much as that of particle-model-based M&Ss. A test simulation is also carried out to analyze the effect of smoke grenade for a tank. This model is to be inserted into a basic tank model on AddSIM. The users of AddSIM will be able to simulate various scenarios including smoke grenades.

  • This study was aimed to assess the effects of microclimate factors on lettuce chlorophyll fluorescent responses and to develop an environment control system for plant growth by adopting a simple genetic algorithm. The photosynthetic responses measurements were repeated by changing one factor among six climatic factors at a time. The maximum Fv'/Fm' resulted when the ambient temperature was $21^{\circ}C,\;CO_2$ concentration range of 1,200 to 1,400 ppm, relative humidity of $68\%$, air current speed of $1.4m{\cdot}s^{-1}$, and the temperature of nutrient solution of $20^{\circ}C$. In PPF greater than $140{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, Fv'/Fm' values were decreased. To estimate the effects of combined microclimate factors on plant growth, a photosynthesis efficiency model was developed using principle component analysis for six microclimate factors. Predicted Fv'/Fm' values showed a good agreement to measured ones with an average error of $2.5\%$. In this study, a simple genetic algorithm was applied to the photosynthesis efficiency model for optimal environmental condition for lettuce growth. Air emperature of $22^{\circ}C$, root zone temperature of $19^{\circ}C,\;CO_2$ concentration of 1,400 ppm, air current speed of $1.0m{\cdot}s^{-1}$, PPF of $430{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, and relative humidity of $65\%$ were obtained. It is feasible to control plant environment optimally in response to microclimate changes by using photosynthesis efficiency model combined with genetic algorithm.

  • A Land-Atmosphere Modeling Package (LAMP) for supporting agricultural and forest management was developed at the National Center for AgroMeteorology (NCAM). The package is comprised of two components; one is the Weather Research and Forecasting modeling system (WRF) coupled with Noah-Multiparameterization options (Noah-MP) Land Surface Model (LSM) and the other is an offline one-dimensional LSM. The objective of this paper is to briefly describe the two components of the NCAM-LAMP and to evaluate their initial performance. The coupled WRF/Noah-MP system is configured with a parent domain over East Asia and three nested domains with a finest horizontal grid size of 810 m. The innermost domain covers two Gwangneung deciduous and coniferous KoFlux sites (GDK and GCK). The model is integrated for about 8 days with the initial and boundary conditions taken from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Final Analysis (FNL) data. The verification variables are 2-m air temperature, 10-m wind, 2-m humidity, and surface precipitation for the WRF/Noah-MP coupled system. Skill scores are calculated for each domain and two dynamic vegetation options using the difference between the observed data from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and the simulated data from the WRF/Noah-MP coupled system. The accuracy of precipitation simulation is examined using a contingency table that is made up of the Probability of Detection (POD) and the Equitable Threat Score (ETS). The standalone LSM simulation is conducted for one year with the original settings and is compared with the KoFlux site observation for net radiation, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, and soil moisture variables. According to results, the innermost domain (810 m resolution) among all domains showed the minimum root mean square error for 2-m air temperature, 10-m wind, and 2-m humidity. Turning on the dynamic vegetation had a tendency of reducing 10-m wind simulation errors in all domains. The first nested domain (7,290 m resolution) showed the highest precipitation score, but showed little advantage compared with using the dynamic vegetation. On the other hand, the offline one-dimensional Noah-MP LSM simulation captured the site observed pattern and magnitude of radiative fluxes and soil moisture, and it left room for further improvement through supplementing the model input of leaf area index and finding a proper combination of model physics.

  • Although the evaluation of the mechanical properties and behavior of jointed rock masses is very important for the design of tunnel and underground openings, it has always been considered the most difficult problem. One of the difficulties in describing the rock mass behavior is the selection of the appropriate constitutive model. This limitation may be overcome with the progress in discrete element software such as PFC, which does not need the user to prescribe a constitutive model for rock mass. In this paper, a 30\;m\;\times\;30\;m\;\times\;30\;m m jointed rock mass of road tunnel site was analyzed. h discrete fracture network was developed from the joint geometry obtained from core logging and surface survey. Using the discontinuities geometry from the DFN model, PFC simulations were carried out, starting with the intact rock and systematically adding the joints and the stress-strain response was recorded for each case. With the stress-strain response curves, the mechanical properties of jointed rock masses were determined. As expected, the presence of joints had a pronounced effect on mechanical properties of the rock mass. More importantly, getting the mechanical response of the PFC model doesn't require a user specified constitutive model.
