  • Diamondback moth (DBM, Plutella xylostella L.) is known as the most destructive pest of cruciferous crops worldwide. As most insecticides targeted to mainly larval stage, new insecticides which have hatching-inhibitory or ovicidal activity could be more efficient to control DBM. Therefore, we developed an easy and efficient method for screening ovicidal activity of DBM eggs using aluminum foil. The aluminum foil ($4{\times}12$ cm) coated with filtered juice of chinese cabbage leave (hereinafter called oviposition foil) exposed to 300 newly-emerged adults for 24 hours inside the rearing container. The oviposition foils were replaced every 4 days consecutively after mating, but it was better to discarded over then. Oviposition foil were divided into 6 to 12 pieces depending on egg mass volume. After dipping into test solutions for 10 seconds using faucet, oviposition foil pieces were placed into common petri dish, and then investigated hatchability. The effect of methanol solvent (50%) for 10 seconds dipping on the toxicity against DBM eggs was negligible. In addition, whether covering the petri dish or not should be dependent on nature of active compounds tested. With applying the new bioassay method, methanol extracts from 50 plants were tested the ovicidal activity to DBM eggs. Among them, four plant extracts; Angelica tenuissima root, Lycium chinense root, Cnidium officinale root and Polygala tenuifolia root, showed high ovicidal activity of over 90% control efficacy, against DBM eggs.

  • This study was carried out to define the optimum drying conditions for Lycium chinense Miller as a useful healthy food, because recently the cultivation area and yield of this fruit are increased. The experiments of two varieties were performed at the temperature of $45^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, $55^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. The drying ratio was the slowest and quality was the best at the drying temperature of $45^{\circ}C$. The drying temperature was higher, drying ratio was more faster and the quality became worse. The difference of drying ratios between the varieties was insignificant. The energy consumption per hour was the minimum at the drying temperature of $45^{\circ}C$, but the total energy consumption was the maximum for the long drying time. Also, the energy consumption at the drying temperature $50^{\circ}C$, $55^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ was not very different from others. Considering the drying ratio, quality and energy consumption, the drying time of 36 hours at the drying temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ was the most optimum condition.

  • Background: The leaves of the goji berry (Lycium chinense Mill.) are used as raw materials in processing and by replace fruits to some extent. The reason is that the leaves are cheaper, however, betaine content is higher than in the fruits. These experiments were conducted to determine the planting density and cutting height for producing a large number of leaves. Methods and Results: The cultivar 'Myeongan' with many branches was used. When the shoot height reached 50 cm - 70 cm, harvesting was possible four times a year. The time to next harvest was approximately 38 days after regeneration of new shoots. Leaf quantity was in the order of 1st > 2nd > 4th > 3rd harvest. Insect damage occurred during the third harvest in late July and early August, therefore, eco-friendly control was necessary. The total yield was higher at the planting density 60 cm × 30 cm than that of 60 cm × 20 cm or 60 cm × 40 cm. The yield at cutting for shoot height of 60 cm was increased by 6.3 percent compared to that of 50 cm, At the cutting height of 70 cm, harvest was difficult owing to hardening of stems and thorns. Betaine content, an indicator component of goji berry, was not significantly different according to planting densities and cutting height. Conclusions: The ideal cutting period to produce leaves of goji berry for processing is when the shoots grow to approximately 60 cm, and the leaves can be harvested 4 times a year. The dried-leaf yield was highest at the planting density of 60 cm × 30 cm.

  • Bacterial antibiotic resistance is a real and growing problem for both Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial pathogens in the hospital setting. Among Gram negative bacteria, the ubiquitous bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a particular concern in immunocompromised and burn patients. The present study evaluated antibacterial activity and efficacy of a Korean herbal medicine against eight multi-drug resistant clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa (0225, 0254, 0347, 0826, 1113, 1378, 1731, and 2492) isolated at Daegu Catholic University Hospital. Methanol extracts of Galla rhois (5 and 10 mg/mL) displayed inhibition diameters for isolate 2492 of 10 and 12 mm, respectively, in a conventional disc diffusion assay. In seven kinds of Korean herbal medicines, increased inhibitory power of Lonicera japonica, Gardenia jasminoides, Galla rhois, and Scultellaria baicalensis was evident with the fermentation of six kinds of lactic acid bacteria. Three lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. plantarum KCTC 3108, L. casei KCTC 3109, and L. fermentum KCTC 3112) were identified as excellent strains for the production of antibacterial materials. In the six Korean herbal medicine extracts, strong inhibitory activity of fermented Forsythia suspensa, Glycyrrhizae radix, Lycium chinense, Platycodon grum, and Schizandra chinensis with five kinds of lactic acid bacteria was evident for seven multi-drug resistant P. aeruginosa isolates.

  • This study was undertaken to test for anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) activity of the aqueous extracts prepared from 9 medicinal plants of Korea (Cornus officinalis, Caesalpinia sappan, Rubus coreanus, Lycium chinense, Artemisia capillaris, Isatis tinctoria, Phyllanthus urinaria, Lysimachia christinae, Lonicera japonica). Aqueous extracts were tested for cytotoxicity and assayed for inhibition of HBV replication by measurement of HBV DNA and surface antigen (HBsAg) levels in the extracellular medium f HepG2 2.2.15 cells. The extract from Rubus coreanus, Artemisia capillaris, Phyllanthus urinaria decreased the levels of extracellular HBV virion DNA at concentrations ranging from 128 to $256\;{\mu}g/ml$ and inhibited the production fo HBsAg dose-dependently without showing cytotoxicity. Our findings suggest that these three hebal medicinal plants may have potential to develop as specific anti-HBV drugs in the future.
