  • In this paper a new approach to adaptive control using a combination of both direct and indirect methods has been proposed. Based on the estimates of the plant parameters and the current values of the control parameters, closed-loop estimation errors .epsilon.$_{\theta}$(t) and .epsilon.$_{k}$(t) are defined. These in turn are used in the adaptive laws for updating both identification as well as control parameters. The global uniform stability of the overall system is shown by constructing a Lyapunov function.n.

  • The analysis of the radiation effect on matter has been performed using stochastic methods. Recently, It was discovered that the detector pulses of radiation can be analysed using deterministic method that utilizes the chaotic behaviour with an attractor found in a noise region. We acquired a time series for pulse tram of Am-241 using scintillation detector and reconstructed a phase space, then performed new analysis for the radiation detection signal by applying embedding theory, Lyapunov exponent, correlation dimension, autocorrelation dimension, and power spectrum.

  • In this paper, we implement an empirical study to test whether the time series of daily returns in stock and Won/USD exchange markets is strictly stationary or explosive. The results indicate that only a few series show nonstationary volatility when dramatic events erupted; in addition, this nonstationary behavior occurs more often in the Won/USD exchange market than in the stock market.

  • This paper deals with the robustness of closed-loop poles of a linear time-invariant system with uncertain parameters. A new method is presented to calculate the perturbation of a pole-located region due to parameter uncertainties. A method to calculate allowable bounds on parameter uncertainties is also presented to retain closed-loop poles in a specified region. Based on Lyapunov equations and norm operations, they provide useful measures on the robustness of closed-loop poles. An example is given to illustrate proposed methods.

  • This paper considers the problem of continuous and discrete time dissipative filter design method for the singular systems with polytopic uncertainties. Two bounded real lemmas (BRL) for the robust filters of dissipative singular systems along with the polytopic uncertainties are proposed on the basis of Lyapunov criterion. The sufficient conditions for both continuous and discrete time dissipative filter design methods are derived using the obtained BRL by linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Finally, the validities of the proposed methods are shown by numerical examples.

  • The problem of testing for a change in the parameter of a stochastic process is particularly important in simulation studies. In studies of the steady state characteristics of a simulation model, it is important to identify initialization bias and to evaluate efforts to control this problem. A simulation output have the characteristics of chaotic behavior because of sensitive dependence on initial conditions. For that reason, we will apply Lyapunov exponent for diagnosis of chaotic motion to simulation output analysis. This paper proposes two methods for diagnosis of steady state in simulation output. In order to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of these methods using chaos theory, M/M/I(.inf.) queueing model is used for testing point estimator, average bias.

  • This paper deals with direct voltage stability analysis using a power system energy function. The structure preserved energy function is proposed as an energy function for voltage stability analysis. With the use of the proposed energy function voltage collapse conditions are derived, which yields the exactly same results with the Jacobian matrix approach. The voltage collapse phenomenon is analyzed by several methods, which shows that all of the methods produce the same voltage condition. This study also investigates the voltage collapse dynamics by using the proposed energy function. As a result, it has been found that the voltage collapse can be classified into two categories: static and dynamic instablilties which have quite different behaviors. In addition a new method is presented to calculate the power capacity limit of transmission lines with respect to voltage stability. The proposed method is tested for a 2-bus sample system, which shows the characteristics of voltage collapse phenomenon via the energy function.

  • Stepper motor is widely used in positioning applications due to its durability and high torque to inertia ratio as well as low cost and ability to be easily controlled with open-loop. Due to increased resolution of position control and improved stability of motion control, microstepping has drawn attention in industry since it was introduced in 1970s. With the increase in computational power and decrease in cost of embedded processors in recent years, drives and control systems for stepper motors have become more sophisticate than ever. Thus, closed-loop control methods have been developed to improve the performance of the stepper motors. In this paper, we review not only basic principles of conventional control methods used for stepper motors but also that of microstepping control. In addition, we surveyed recent development in nonlinear control methods applied to stepper motors. The nonlinear control methods are presented in the view of Lyapunov stability. Nonlinear torque disturbance observer, sliding mode control, and nonlinear phase compensation are also presented.

  • Objective: Moxibustion is one of major healing technique in oriental medicine. It has been widely used in many disease. There is an text which suggest moxibustion is more efficient to the situation of han(寒) and heo(虛) than yeal(熱) and sil(實) in Huangdineijing <黃帝內經>. The aim of this study is to research the effect of moxibustion at Shinmun(H7) is different according to cold or heat tendendy man by analyzing the electroencephalogram(EEG). Methods: We classified objects by their cold or heat tendency using questionnare for cold - heat patternization. (12 cold tendency man, 19 heat tendency man) Before and after moxibustion at Shinmun(H7), EEG raw data were measured during 5 minutes. The correlation dimension(D2), the correlation dimension variability rate(${\Delta}D2$), largest lyapunov exponent(L1) and largest lyapunov exponent variability rate(${\Delta}L1$) were calculated. We analyzed D2, ${\Delta}D2$, L1, ${\Delta}L1$ to see the effect of moxibustion at Shinmun(H7) was statistically different according to Cold or Heat tendendy man. Results : Paired t-test showed significant differences between before and after moxibustion at Shinmun(H7) on the Fp2 in D2(p<0.05), on the Fp2, F3 and F4 in ${\Delta}L1$(p<0.05). Student Hest showed significant differences between cold and heat tendendy man on the F3 in ${\Delta}L1$(p<0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that moxibustion at Shinmun has an effect on stabilizing mind and it is more efficient to the cold tendendy man than the heat tendendy man.

  • A Nonlinear model-based Hybrid Controller (NHC) is developed which consists of the adaptive proportional-integral-feedforward (PIF) gains and variable structure controller. The controller has the robustness against modeling uncertainty and is applied to the trajectory tracking control of single-input, single-output nonlinear systems. The essence of the scheme is to divide the control into four different terms. Namely, the adaptive P-I-F gains and variable structure controller are used to accomplish the specific control actions by each terms. The robustness of the controller is guaranteed by the feedback of estimated uncertainty and the performance specification given by the adaptation of PIF gains using the second method of Lyapunov. The variable structure controller is incorporated to regulate the initial peak of the tracking error during the parameter adaptation is not settled yet. The newly developed NHC method is applied to the power tracking control of a nuclear reactor and the simulation results show great improvement in tracking performance compared with the conventional model-based control methods.
