Study on Design Parameters of LED Secondary Lens with Very Close Range (초근접 LED 2차 렌즈의 설계 변수에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the performance of a system was analyzed according to the design parameters of a LED secondary lens that can be applied at a very close range, e.g., for direct lighting or display systems. We designed the secondary lens of the very-close-range LED using an aspheric equation and analyzed its performance-particularly the angle of the beam spread, central luminous intensity, and light uniformity-with respect to the thickness of lens, radius, conic constant, and asphericity (4th). Our analysis shows that four parameters affect the performance. The simulation results indicate an optimal thickness of 1 mm and show that a larger radius yields higher performance. The optimal range for the conic constant was determined as -1.21 to -1.25, the optimal range for the asphericity was determined as 0.0047xx to 0.0049xx (4th).

  • In this paper, we have measured and compared the optical and electrical characteristics of LED(light emitting diode) and CNT(carbon nano-tube) lightings. Especially, the IES format files are used for each of the luminaire LlD(luminous intensity distribution) analysis and light level simulation for analyze the maximum, minimum, and average light level. In the future, when CNT and the LED based lighting technology standards are writing, this data will be used in judging.

A Dimming Method for the UHD Broadcast LED Lighting (UHD 방송용 LED 조명의 조도제어 방법)

  • This paper proposes a dimming method and a hybrid LED driving circuit suitable for the ultra high definition (UHD) broadcasting. There are major two problems during the dimming control for traditional LED broadcast lightings; one is a flicker that occurred when camera filming to these lightings, and the other is that linear control is impossible for LED luminous intensity under 10% due to LED electrical characteristics. The proposed dimming method and the driving circuit are designed to solve two problems simultaneously. For high level dimming control region from 10 to 100%, the analog control method was applied to the switching regulator constructed by MOSFET operated in the saturation region. For low level dimming control region under 10%, the fast PWM control method with the linear regulator constructed by MOSFET in the ohmic region was used. We verified experimentally that the dimming method is able to control the luminous intensity linearly from 1 to 100% and the flicker disappears on images taken by the charge coupled device (CCD) and the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) cameras. Therefore, the proposed method is suitable for the UHD broadcasting.

Optimization of the Optical System for an Aircraft Warning Light Using a Fresnel Lens (프레넬 렌즈를 이용한 항공장애등 광학계 최적 설계)

  • In this paper, an aircraft warning light's optical system was designed using an LED light-source module and a collimating Fresnel lens. As for the optical system, a collimator Fresnel lens was designed for each module to satisfy a vertical-elevation center luminous intensity of 20,000 cd and the divergence-angle luminous-intensity standard conditions of the Ministry of Land for Infrastructure and Transport for aircraft warning lights. In addition, the optical system was optimized by adjusting the position and tilt of the LED light-source module and Fresnel lens. By analyzing and comparing the light-distribution characteristics of the optical system, an aircraft-warning-light optical system with optimal performance was obtained.

  • The high efficiency tubular LED lamp has been developed. But, it occurs optical losses in consists of LED package, module, diffuser etc.. By Measuring the tubular LED lamp's luminous flux, we compared and analyzed about the effect of optical losses for each component and actually using measured luminous intensity distribution data, illuminance distribution was simulated by Relux. Optical losses are 24[%] from LED package to luminaire and the tubular LED lamp can be replaced with fluorescent lamp. In this paper, we could provide data for optimum lighting design by analyzing the optical characteristics for developing and propagating the tubular LED lamp.

  • We proposed the new structure of ac plasma display panel(PDP) to improve the luminous efficacy and driving voltage characteristics. Through two-dimensional numerical simulations, we analyzed the effects of new counter discharge type, which consists of counter sustain electrodes and auxiliary electrodes. Generally, an advantage of AC PDP with the counter sustain electrodes has been known for the driving characteristics of the low voltage. In this work, the new counter structure using the ignition discharge by the auxiliary pulse applied to the address electrode showed the result of the increased luminous efficacy. The short gap discharge between two auxiliary electrodes on the front plate could intensity the long gap discharge between counter electrodes. The reliability of simulation result could be confirmed by the experimental result in the test panel.

  • The mechanical properties and surface luminous intensities of copper foil have been studied with variation of the amount of additives into the electrolyte. Especially, organic compound of HEC was added from 0.1 to 10ppm for the propose of increasing the mechanical property and the surface state. The total thickness of electrodeposited copper foil was decreased with increasing the amount of organic compounds. There was not so much significant effect of the current density. It has been observed that mechanical property and surface luminous intensity increase with increasing concentration of organic compounds.

Improvement of Luminance and Luminous Efficacy in Mid-gap AC Plasma Display Panels (중간간격을 갖는 교류형 플라즈마 디스플레이 표시기의 효율향상을 위한 연구)

  • In a surface type ac PDP having $200{\mu}m$ gap between the surface electrodes, the luminous efficacy has a reciprocal dependence on the sustaining frequency. The discharge current flowing to the address electrodes are measured to investigate the phenomena and spectral intensity from visible light to infra red is measured to verify phosphor saturation with the frequency. Experiments show the discharge between the address and surface electrodes deteriorates the efficacy in high sustaining frequencies. Pulse width modulation is introduced to improve the efficacy. In optimum conditions, we obtained 1.99lm/w and 1.79lm/w at 200kHz and 250kHz, respectively.

Self-Illuminated Smart Window Based on Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal Mixed with Cu-doped ZnS

  • Novel self-illuminated smart windows were fabricated consisting of Cu-doped ZnS (ZnS:Cu) powder and polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC). This smart window shows not only switchable transparency but also self-illumination without any attachable luminous body. Its electro-optical characteristics, transmittance, and luminance were investigated in relation to various applied voltages and composition ratios. The optical transmittance and luminous intensity increased with increasing applied voltages. However, the optical transmittance decreased with increasing ZnS:Cu powder content. One of the self-illuminated smart windows, which was fabricated with 9 wt% of ZnS:Cu, achieved the optical transmittance of 60.5% (at 550 nm) and the luminance of 11.0 cd/m2 at 100 V. This smart window could be used as a normal switchable smart window in daytime and light-emitting signage at night.
