  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of green sorting before drying on the high-temperature drying characteristics of southern yellow pine dimension lumber(2"${\times}$6"${\times}$12'). To test the advantages of weight sorting, green lumber was seperated into heavy(above 55 1b), medium(50-55 1b), and light(below 50 1b)weight classes. Pieces in each weight class were subgrouped into high(above 35%) and low(below 30%) latewood groups. Groups were dried and seperated by a standard commercial high-temperature schedule; dry bulb temperature $245^{\circ}$ F, wet bulb temperature $180^{\circ}$ F, and air velocity 1200fpm. The results obtained were as follows; 1. There was a highly significant correlation between annual rings per inch(X) and percent-latewood(Y). The regression equation was Y=24, 5047+1.3272X. 2. There were highly significant correlations between either annual rings per inch($X_1$) or percent-latewood($X_2$) a.d specific gravity in green wood(Y). Their regression equations were Y=0.4260+0.0081$X_1$ and Y=0.3749+0.0029$X_2$, respectively. 3. Heavier weight charges dried more slowly than lighter weight charges. 4. Board-to-board variation in green or dry moisture content was less for all seperate weight classes than for unseperated control charges. 5. Lower latewood pieces had higher initial moisture content than higher latewood pieces, and then drying time for lower late wood pieces was longer than higher latewood pieces.

  • Dry formulation is a limiting step for successful development of microbial bio-pesticides with the antagonistic Gram-negative bacteria because their survival rates are too low during drying and storage. The high concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl) in culture medium that induces osmolyte in bacterial cells is known to increase of survival rate during drying in many Gram-negative bacteria. Effect of NaCl on survival of antagonistic non-pathogenic Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora 9-3 (Ecc 9-3) during drying and storage was studied. Growth rate of Ecc 9-3 was not much different up to 0.5 M NaCl in NB while it was lower significantly with 0.7 M NaCl. Survival rates were twice and 3 times higher with 0.5 M NaCl than with no additional NaCl during drying at room temperature and freeze-drying, respectively. Survival rate was also higher with high NaCl in culture medium during storage after drying. It was not much different on storage at $4^{\circ}C$ both of drying at room temperature and freeze-drying. However, the survival rate was higher on storage at $27^{\circ}C$ and $37^{\circ}C$ with high NaCl concentration. Among the additives tested, lactose affects most to survival rate both of drying at room temperature and freeze-drying, and dextrin influenced significantly to survival rate of drying at room temperature.

  • The objectives of this study were to examine changes in the color and antioxidant compounds of paprika powder under various conditions, as well as to establish the suitable conditions for drying and storage. Paprika was dried using the following methods: freeze-drying, vacuum drying, far infrared-ray drying, and hot-air drying. Measurements of the moisture content, color pigments, and antioxidant compounds (total carotenoids, capsanthin, ascorbic acid, and total polyphenols) were completed during 120 days of storage at 4 and $30^{\circ}C$. We found that drying methods, storage temperatures, and packaging materials affected the American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) and Hunter color values, as well as the antioxidant content of paprika powder. There was a high correlation (r=0.87, p<0.01) between the ASTA color and the $a^*/b^*$ value. The loss of red color was closely related to the reduction of moisture content (r=0.81, p<0.01) during storage. Drying paprika with a low temperature in the absence of air resulted in better retention of the carotenoids and ascorbic acid. Also, as the retention of the carotenoids and ascorbic acid increased, the stability of the red pigment increased. Freeze-drying was found to be the most suitable drying method for the stability of the antioxidant compounds and red pigment.

  • This study was carried out to find the efficient methods for preventing resin exudation from spruce board during high temperature environment service. In the dry-air oven test, in-use temperature related to resin exudation of 110℃ could be obtained by the appropriate kiln drying without any special treatment, and the in-use temperature of the radio-frequency/vacuum (RF/V)-dried boards was about 20℃ higher than that of the conventional kiln-dried boards. In the autoclave test, resin exudation was not found from any board dried in the conventional kiln and in the RF/V kiln after the low pressure steam explosion (SE) treating, while for the control resin exudations were more severe in the autoclave test above 130℃ than in the dry-air oven test. It, therefore, would be suggested that resin exudation during high temperature service condition can be prevented more effectively by super-heated steaming green boards than by high-temperature drying boards with low moisture.

  • This study was conducted to provide basic information on the effects of drying temperatures (45, 65, and $85^{\circ}C$) on saponins and free sugar contents of a 5-year-old Platycodon grandiflorum Radix. Platycodin D levels decreased with increase in drying temperature (956, 334, and 197 mg% at 45, 65, and $85^{\circ}C$, respectively). Polygalacin D levels were the highest at $45^{\circ}C$ (577 mg%), while platycodin $D_3$ and deapioplatycodin D were high at $65^{\circ}C$ (304 and 272 mg%, respectively). Sucrose levels were 3,825 mg% at $85^{\circ}C$ and 1,226 mg% at $45^{\circ}C$, and decreased when the drying temperature was decreased. The sucrose content showed significant negative correlation with saponin levels in dried P. grandiflorum ($-0.987^{**}$, p<0.01). These results suggested that drying P. grandiflorum at low temperatures is more economically viable.

  • In order to improve the performance of green emitting phosphors for plasma display panel, the $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn,Al$ phosphors were synthesized using sol-gel technique and studied using SEM and VUV photoluminescence spectrometer. pH values of the starting solutions (pH = 0.5$\~$2.34) were controled by HCl as the catalysis of hydrolysis and wet gels were dried at $80^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$, respectively. We investigated the effects of pH and drying temperatures during sol-gel processes. The results indicated that the phosphor prepared at pH = 1 showed the maximum emission intensity in both drying conditions and the effect of pH of the starting solution on morphology were increased with particle size as HCl and phosphor dried at high temperature showed more spherical and smaller particles than at low.

  • This study was performed to determine the effects of drying methods on the quality and physiological activities of blueberry. Blueberries(Vaccinium ashei) were dried by hot-air ($60^{\circ}C$), cyclic low pressure ($50^{\circ}C$), and freeze drying methods. They contained high properties of carbohydrates(68.48~80.00%), crude protein(1.63~5.41%), crude fat(0.58~1.25%), and ash(0.71~1.11%) regardless of the drying methods. There were no differences in pH according to the drying methods. Browning index increased as the drying temperature increased. The L, a values of the freeze-dried sample were higher than those of the other dried samples, whereas the b value of the cyclic low pressure dried sample was higher than that of the other samples. The free sugar contents of the hot-air sample were higher than those of the other samples. Vitamin C content of the freeze dried sample was higher than that of either the hot-air or cyclic low pressure dried sample. The contents of total polyphenols and anthocyanins were higher in the freeze dried sample. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of freeze drying sample was higher than that of either the hot-air or cyclic low pressure dried sample. The result indicated that there were no differences in product quality depending on the freeze-drying and cyclic low pressure drying methods.

  • Hot air drying of Lentinus edodes was studied using the microcomputer drying system that can control the drying parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity and a weight-loss of water. The physico-chemical properties of dried products were measured in order to investigate the drying characteristics. The mechanism of water movement during air drying of Lentinus edodes closely followed the Page model. That was $M-M_c/M_0-M_c\;=\;\exp\;(-0.275t^{1.154})$ at $50^{\circ}C$ and 20% RH. The free amino acids increased with increased relative humidity. The color and browning degree increased with increased air temperature and relative humidity. The rehydration rate was low when the air temperature and relative humidity were high.

  • To provide the basic data to dry vegetate the sweetpotato leaves, the total contents of tannin, flavonoid and polyphenol in the methanol extract from the hot-air dried sweetpotato leaves were analyzed and DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging ability, nitrite scavenging ability, and others were comparatively analyzed. The total tannin content was decreased from Shinmi of 10.87 mg/g at $40^{\circ}C$ to 7.28 mg/g at $70^{\circ}C$ and the total flavonoid was decreased from Hayanmi of 55.37 mg/g at $40^{\circ}C$ to 39.63 mg/g at $70^{\circ}C$. That is, the low temperature drying contained more of these substances than in the high temperature drying. The DPPH radical scavenging activity was the highest in Shinmi and Hayanmi of 84.33% and 85.25% at $40^{\circ}C$, and the ABTS radical scavenging ability was a high value of over 80% in the treatment plot at $40^{\circ}C$. The nitrite scavenging ability was highest in Shinmi and Hayanmi of 76.15% and 73.74% at $40^{\circ}C$ but low at $70^{\circ}C$. That is, the antioxidant effect of the hot-air dried sweetpotato leaves was high in the sample of $40^{\circ}C$ and low in the sample of $70^{\circ}C$. Affected by the drying temperature, the high antioxidant effect is resulting from the little decrease of active ingredient when drying at low temperatures.
