  • Optical fiber gratings have been intensively studied for applications in optical fiber communications and sensor systems due to their all-fiber configuration, low insertion loss, low cost, and high flexibility. Especially, cladding mode coupling fiber devices such as long period gratings (LPG) and acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF) have been developed as a gain equalization filter in erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems$^{(1-2)}$ . • A $5^{th}$-order low-pass filter (LPF) chip implemented in a six-layer low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) dielectric substrate has been presented. Lumped elements constituting the LPF are designed three-dimensionally in multilayers. In order to improve the parasitic and mutual coupling effects between them, the LPF is designed by sequentially integrating the three-dimensional (3D) lumped elements, by comparing it to the results of the schematic circuit and 3D electromagnetic (EM) analysis. The designed 3D LPF chip was fabricated in a six-layer LTCC substrate as small as $4.0{\times}3.22{\times}0.68mm^3$. The measured return and insertion losses are less than -11 dB and -0.61 dB, respectively, below 1.5 GHz.

  • In this paper, a design of multi-layered BPF(bandpass filter) using LTCC(Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) process by a lumped-elements is proposed for SOP(system-on-a-chip) of wireless communication systems. The proposed BPF improved a characteristic of rejection band to build an attenuation pole caused by structurally adjacent co-inductance and coupling. The simulation data shows a bandwidth of 90MHz from a center frequency of 2.4GHz, a return loss of 27dB, an insertion loss of 3.2dB, and an attenuation of at least 20dBc at $f_0{\pm}250MHz$. Simulations have used serenade circuit simulation and HFSS EM simulation.

  • In this paper, we have designed and fabricated 7-bands (GSM 850/900, DCS/PCS, and UMTS 3 bands) LTCC front end module (FEM) embedded LPF (low pass filter) to efficiently eliminate harmonics generated in TX path. The proposed FEM is composed of flip-chip typed CMOS SP9T switch to select transceiver signals, dual type SAW filters to receive Rx signals, and 0603 size chip components for the antenna matching and ESD protection. The whole size of FEM is $4.5{\times}3.2{\times}1.2mm^3$. The insertion loss of Tx and Rx ports are measured at 1.7 dB and 4.8 dB, respectively.

  • Due to the miniaturization of electrical components and assembles on signal circuits, transient overvoltages caused by switching operation or lightning surges have become more interesting concern to the field of electrical engineering. In this paper, the development of surge protective devices(SPDs) that can protect sensitive signal device on shipboard from overvoltages are described. Two kinds of SPDs are designed and tested by using a combination surge generator which can produce the standard impulse current of 8/20${\mu}s$ 2.1kA according to the IEC 61000-4-5 standard. From the simulation and experimental results, it is confirmed that the proposed SPDs have an enough protection performance with a low insertion loss and a low clamping voltage.

  • With the development of diverse agricultures worldwide, biofortified rice noted for its preferable marketability and palatability plays an important role in the world's agricultural economics and rice breeding programs. In this report, several $M_5$ of T-DNA inserted lines derived from the donor cultivars, 'Hwayong' and 'Dongjin', were selected for high or low protein, high lipid and low amylose content, respectively. The coefficients and ranges of variation for the chemical constituents between $M_4$ and $M_5$ T-DNA inserted lines were evaluated in comparison with those of the donor varieties. Results indicated that T-DNA insertion might be an effective way to generate useful variations for chemical composition of rice grains which could be used for the development of biofortified rice cultivars.

  • Tantalum oxide thin filme has an amorphous structure and a high resistivity. Its stoichiometric structure was $Ta_2O_{5.3}$ and the transmission ratio was 80%. The high resistivity of $Ta_2O_{5.3}$ thin film electrolyte made an EC windows without electrical shottness, but the bleached/colored cur rent was very low because of the low ion conductivith. Upon adding moisture into the system, the $\Delta$T increased upto 25 %. proton concentration increase was the main cases to improve optical property. The influence of adding precious or transition metal film(~100 $\AA$ thickness) in $Ta_2O_5$layer on the color change performance was observed. The metal insertion layers had formed hydroxide and they behaved as a stable proton source. The transmission diffrnece and cycle life were greatly enhanced in the case of Ti inssertion. The $\Delta$T was 50% and the cycle life was 18, 000.

  • In lieu of the excellent radio frequency (RF) performance of microelectromechanical system ( MEMS) switches, these micro switches need higher actuation voltage for their operation. This requirement is secondary to concerns over the swtiches’ reliability. This paper reports high reliability operation of RF MEMS switches with low voltage requirements. The proposed switch is optimised to perform in the Q-band, which results in actuation voltage of just 16.4 V. The mechanical stress gradient in the thin micro membrane is computed by simulating von Mises stress in a multi-physics environment that results in 90.4 MPa stress. The computed spring constant for the membrane is 3.02 N/m. The switch results in excellent RF performance with simulated isolation of above 38 dB, insertion loss of less than 0.35 dB and return loss of above 30 dB in the Q-band.

  • In this paper, a compact fully printable bandpass filter is suggested for a low-frequency channel 3.2 GHz ~ 3.7 GHz in the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) communication system. It is featured with a small geometry of $0.5{\lambda}_g/15$ and a low insertion loss despite using FR4 as a cheap substrate of a high dielectric loss. This is made possible by generating zeroth-order-resonance (ZOR) from one cell comprising two series resonances obviously separated from one shunt resonance as a third-order bandpass filter. Especially, the series resonance elements are combined with spur-lines bent by 90 degrees, which makes the port-impedance matched well and eliminates spurious hikes in the stopband, while the overall size remains almost unchanged. The design is carried out by setting up the equivalent circuit and the circuit simulation is checked by the full-wave EM analysis. The structure is manufactured and measured to show that the circuit modeling and EM simulation results agree with the measured data.

  • This paper presents the see-saw type RF MEMS switch based on a single crystalline silicon structure with narrow gap vertical comb. Low actuation voltage and high isolation are key features to be solved in electrostatic RF MEMS switch design. Since these parameters in conventional parallel plate RF MEMS switch designs are in trade-off relationship, both requirements cannot be met simultaneously. In the vertical comb design, however, the actuation voltage is independent of the vertical separation distance between the contact electrodes. Therefore, the large separation gap between contact electrodes is implemented to achieve high isolation. We have designed and fabricated RF MEMS switch which has 46dB isolation at 5GHz, 0.9dB insertion loss at 5GHz and 40V actuation voltage.
