  • To determine the effect of low dose gamma radiation on the germination and enzyme activities, seeds of Chinese cabbage (Brassica compestris L. cv. Hanyoreum) and radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv. Chungsukoungzoung) were irradiated at the dose of 2-50 Gy. The germination rate of irradiation group was higher than that of the control. Especially it was highest at the early stage. The germination rate of Chinese cabbage was high at 2 Gy and 8 Gy irradiation group and that of radish was high at 2 Gy, 6 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation group. Growth of both seedlings of Chinese cabbage and radish increased positively in low dose irradiation group. The height of Chinese cabbage was noticeably high at 4 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation group and that of radish at 6 Gy irradiation group. The protein contents of seedlings from seeds irradiated with the low dose gamma radiation was higher than the control, especially at the early stage. The enzyme activities of seedlings from seeds irradiated with the low dose gamma radiation was high at 4 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation group. These results suggest that the germination, growth and enzyme activities of old vegetable seeds could be promoted by the low dose gamma radiation.

  • We fabricated a 15 m long position-sensitive plastic scintillation optical fiber (PSOF) detector consisting of a PSOF, two photomultiplier tubes, four fast amplifiers, and a digitizer. A single PSOF was used as a sensing part to estimate the gamma-ray source position, and 137Cs, an uncollimated solid-disk-type radioactive isotope, was used as a gamma-ray emitter. To improve the sensitivity, accuracy, and measurement time of a PSOF detector compared to those of previous studies, the performance of the amplifier was optimized, and the digital signal processing (DSP) was newly designed in this study. Moreover, we could measure very low dose rates of gamma-rays with high sensitivity and accuracy in a very short time using our proposed PSOF detector. The results of this study indicate that it is possible to accurately and quickly locate the position of a very low dose rate gamma-ray source in a wide range of contaminated areas using the proposed position-sensitive PSOF detector.

  • Background: It is controversial issue that heparin decreases thrombosis for microsurgical anastomosis, and its effective role is under discussion. This study is for proving whether low-dose heparin is preventing thrombosis in free flap reconstruction. Methods: Through chart reviews of 134 patients, using low-dose heparin for free tissue transfer from 2011 to 2016, retrospective analysis was performed. 33 patients received low-dose heparin therapy after surgery. And 101 patients received no-heparin therapy. Complications included flap necrosis, hematoma formation, dehiscence and infection. Results: In no-heparin therapy group, comparing the flap necrosis revealed 16 cases (15.84%). And, flap necrosis was 6 cases (18.18%) in low-dose heparin therapy group. The statistical analysis of flap necrosis rate showed no significant difference (p=0.75). The results showed that there was no significant difference of flap necrosis rate between two groups. Conclusion: In this study, patients in the low-dose heparin group had no significantly lower rates of flap failure compared with no-heparin group. This suggests that low-dose heparin may not prevent thrombosis and subsequent flap failure to a significant extent.

  • The present study was performed to investigate the toxicity of low-dose-rate irradiation in BALB/c mice. Twenty mice of each sex were randomly assigned to four groups of five mice each and were exposed to 0 (sham), 0.02, 0.2, or 2 Gy, equivalents to low-dose-rate irradiation to 3.49 $mGy{\cdot}h^{-1}$. Urine, blood, and blood biochemistry were analyzed, and organ weight was measured. The low-dose-rate irradiation did not induce any toxicologically significant changes in mortality, clinical signs, body weight, food and water consumption, urinalysis, and serum biochemistry. However, the weights of reproductive organs including the testis, ovary, and uterus decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Irradiation at 2 Gy significantly decreased the testis, ovary, and uterus weights, but did not change the weights of other organs. There were no adverse effects on hematology in any irradiated group and only the number of neutrophils increased dose dependently. The low-dose-rate irradiation exposure did not cause adverse effects in mice at dose levels of 2 Gy or less, but the reproductive systems of male and female mice showed toxic effects.

  • Soybean (Glycine max L. cv. Hwangkeum) seeds were irradiated with the dose of $0{\sim}20$ Gy to investigate the effect of the low dose ${\gamma}-ray$ radiation on the early growth and resistance to subsequent high dose of radiation. Germination rate was not enhanced in the seeds irradiated with low dos ${\gamma}-ray$ but plant height and fresh weight increased in the low dose irradiation group. The optimal radiation dose for the growth increasing was 8 Gy in soybean plant. Growth inhibition of soybean plants by high dose radiation was noticeably reduced by pre-irradiation of low dose radiation, Resistance to subsequent high dose of radiation was effective in 8 Gy and 20 Gy irradiation group.

  • Objective : Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery (GK SRS) has become an important treatment modality for vestibular schwannomas. We evaluated the tumor control rate, patterns of tumor volume change and preservation of hearing following low-dose radiation for vestibular schwannomas in a homogeneous cohort group in which the mean marginal dose was 12 Gy. Methods : A total of 59 patients were enrolled in this study. All enrolled patients were followed-up for at least 5 years and the radiation dose was 11-13 Gy. Regular MRI, audiometry and clinical evaluations were done and tumor volumes were obtained from MRI using the OSIRIS program. Results : The tumor control rate was 97%. We were able to classify the patterns of change in tumor volume into three categories. Transient increases in tumor volume were detected in 29% of the patients and the maximum transient increase in tumor volume was identified at 6 to 30 months after GK SRS. The transient increases in tumor volume ranged from 121% to 188%. Hearing was preserved in 4 of the 12 patients who had serviceable hearing prior to treatment. There were no other complications associated with GK SRS. Conclusion : Low-dose GK SRS was an effective and safe mode of treatment for vestibular schwannomas in comparison to the previously used high-dose GK SRS. Transient increases in tumor volume can be identified during the follow-up period after low-dose GK SRS for vestibular schwannomas. Physicians should be aware that these increases are not always indicative of treatment failure and that close observation is required following treatments. Unfortunately, a satisfactory hearing preservation rate was not achieved by reducing the radiation dose. It is thought that hearing preservation is a more sophisticated problem and further research is required.

  • Objective : To evaluate the efficacy of low-dose aspirin on IVF outcome and endometrium in patients undergoing IVF-ET. Materials and Methods : From February, 2001 to Jun, 2001, 60 infertile patients were randomly divided into study group (28 cycles) and control group (32 cycles). The study group received a daily oral dose of 25 mg of aspirin for at least 2 weeks from first visiting day. Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation was initiated in all patients with the GnRH agonist starting in the midluteal phase of the previous cycle. Results: There were no significant differences in age of the patients, basal serum E2, LH, FSH level and endometrial thickness among two groups. There were no statistically significant differences between the study group and the control group respectively in dosage ($26.5{\pm}4.8$ vs $26.2{\pm}5.3$ amples) and duration ($10.4{\pm}4.2$ vs $9.8{\pm}5.3$ days) of gonadotropin administration, serum E2 level on the hCG administration day ($1823{\pm}342$ vs $1854{\pm}543$), LH ($14.5{\pm}2.7$ vs $14.8{\pm}3.1$), FSH ($16.7{\pm}3.4$ vs $18.3{\pm}4.7$), the number of follicles > 15 mm ($13.2{\pm}6.3$ vs $12.8{\pm}5.9$), the number of oocytes retrieved ($9.2{\pm}2.4$ vs $8.4{\pm}1.7$), the number of embryos transferred ($4.7{\pm}2.0$ vs $4.7{\pm}2.0$), fertilization rate (68.4% vs 64.5%), implantation rate (21.3% vs 17.6%), and clinical pregnancy rate (28.4% vs 26.2%). The endometrial thickness and the percentage of endometrial trilaminar pattern on hCG day were significantly higher in study group than control group ($12.9{\pm}3.7mm$ vs $10.4{\pm}2.8mm$, 78.3% vs 64.5%). Conclusion: Many reports suggest that low-dose aspirin improve ovarian response, implantation rate, fertilization rate, implantation rate, and pregnancy rate by increasing the blood flow, but we couldn't prove the significant effect of low-dose aspirin on the IVF outcome except on endometrium. This may be affected by dose of aspirin, duration, and number of patients studied. This trial is small, so our results highlight the need for a large randomized controlled trial to identify the effect of low-dose as pirin on IVF-ET outcome.

  • This study was measured the radiation-induced current - X-ray dose, dose rate, X-ray quality, time, temperature, electric field characteristics and the dependence of gap length in insulating oil under of D.C. Voltage before, during and after X-ray irradiation. The obtained results can be summarized as following. 1. The radiation - induced current is more the dependence of X-ray quality (tube voltage) than quantity (tube current), the dependence of quantity is appeared at the high than low X-.ay tube voltage. 2. The dependence of dose rate is appeared at the more dose rate, and ${\triangle}\;=\;0.64{\sim}0.74$. 3. The higher temperature of insulating oil and X-ray tube voltage (X-ray quality) is increased, at the low electric field, the more radiation-induced current. 4. $G_{eq}-G_{o}(={\triangle}G)$ is increased at the low than high temperature, high than low X-ray quality. 5. The dependence of temperature is appeared before than during X-ray irradiation. 6. The RIC saturation region is appeared at the high than low insulating oil temperature during (1000 V/cm above) than before (4000 V/cm above) X-ray irradiation.

  • An Area Radiation Monitoring System (ARMS) ionization chamber, which had an 11.8 L active volume, was fabricated and performance-tested at KAERI. Low leakage currents, linearities at low and high dose rates were achieved from performance tests. The correlation coefficients between the ionization currents and the dose rates are 1 at high dose rate and 0.99 at low dose rate. In this study, an integration-type ARMS ionization chamber was tested over a year for an evaluation of its long-term stability at a radioisotope (RI) repository of the Young-gwang nuclear power plant. The standard deviation of dose rate of 1 day data and over a 100-days mean value were 6.2 $\mu$R/h and 2.9 $\mu$R/h, respectively. The fabricated ARMS ionization chamber showed stable performance from the results of the long-term tests. Design and performance characteristics of the fabricated ionization chamber for the ARMS from performance-tests are also addressed.
