  • We investigated the toxicity of zinc and aluminum hot-dip galvanized sheet steel to abalone Haliotis discus hannai via changes in the gill and hepatopancreas using histological and transmission electron microscopy analysis. Experimental groups were composed of one control and four exposure conditions (direct or indirect exposure to zinc and aluminum hot-dip galvanized sheet steel). In the control group, aluminum exposure groups (direct and indirect), and indirect zinc exposure group, abalone mortality was not observed until the end of the experiment, and no histopathological changes were observed in the gill and hepatopancreas. However, the direct zinc exposure group exhibited 100% mortality. Ultrastructural analysis of the cytoplasm of ciliated and microvilli-bearing epithelial cells from gill filaments revealed electron-dense vesicles near the cell membrane and disruption of the nuclear membrane. We also observed swollen mitochondria and a loss of mitochondrial cristae. The hepatopancreas showed similar changes, and we detected highly electron-dense particles within the vesicles. These results suggest that abalone exposed directly to zinc hot-dip galvanized sheet steel experience acute toxicity, causing damage to cell organelles in the gill and hepatopancreas and, finally, inducing mortality.

  • The water-jet technique started by Bridgman can cut metal and alloys without harmful gas and fume. However, while this technique is convenient to cut metals and alloys, in the case of coated pipe, water jet induces the degradation of coatings on the pipes, and may facilitate structural failure, leakage, and loss of products. While there are many reports on the effect of water jet on cut metals and the damage of metallic materials, research on the effect of water impingement on the epoxy coatings has been little studied. In this work, we therefore control the velocity of water jet, distance between nozzle and specimen, and water temperature, and discuss the effect of water impingement on the epoxy coatings. Increasing water velocity and water temperature and reducing nozzle distance increased the degradation rates of three epoxy coatings were increased. Among three test parameters - water velocity, nozzle distance and water temperature, water temperature was relatively effective to increase the degradation rate of epoxy coatings.

  • This study was to investigate the effect of .compressive load and cyclic humidity(2$0^{\circ}C$, 65% and 90% RH) on the physical and mechanical properties of corrugated board. Corrugated boards in the study were under compressive load and under cyclic humidity, and their properties were compared to those without load. Results were summarized as follows ; 1 Statistically significant correlation was shown between the ring crush of the boards and the compressive strength of cylinder specimen made from the boards. So we could study the compressive behavior of board with cylinder specimen. 2. The boards under the compressive load increased their moisture content and thickness much more than those without load both in constant and in cyclic RH. 3. The compressive and tensile strength of board samples were inversely and closely proportional to the sheet moisture content regardless of their load and humidity history. 4. The moisture content did not show any significant proportionality to the change of burst strength of boards within this experiment. 5. Board reconditioning in standard condition led to the recovery of the strength loss that had occurred under various load and humidity condition. 6. The handsheets prepared from the boards that had experienced compressive load and cyclic humidity, and those with no-load and 65% RH did not show any significant difference in strength properties. No physical damage or load-carrying properties of the wood fiber were observed by the compressive load and cyclic humidity history.

  • Cotton, rayon/cotton, and Tencel twill weave fabrics were used to investigate the effect of fiber types on the cellulase washing finish. And twill. basket, and derivative weave cotton fabrics were used to study the weave effect. Various fabrics were treated with neutral cellulase varying treatment times and with acid cellulase, stone, and stone-neutral cellulase respectively for two hours in a rotary washer. Weight loss decreased in the order of rayon/cotton> cotton> Tencel, and basket and derivative weave fabrics lost more weight than twill weave fabric. Color difference decreased in the order of cotton> Tencel> rayon/cotton, and twill weave fabric had larger color difference than derivative and basket weave fabrics. Back staining decreased in the order of cotton> rayon/cotton> Tencel, and twill weave fabric had larger back staining than derivative and basket weave fabrics. Tear strength retention decreased in the order of rayon/cotton> cotton> Tencet and twill weave fabric had larger tear strength retention than derivative and basket weave fabrics. Flex stiffness retention decreased in the order of cotton> Tencel> rayon/cotton, and in the order of derivative> twill> basket weave. In cotton fibers, damage of primary wall was observed. And the cellulase treatment on Tencel seemed to roughen the fabric surface slightly, and to fibril fibers along the fiber axis.

  • The advantage of enzyme scouring over alkali scouring is that the enzymatic process can be carried in a neutral pH, resulting in less damage on the fibers and a drastic reduction of wastewater. Since the pH of scouring bath is neutral, dyeing can be carried in the same bath. Four different types of scouring and dyeing in a single-bath were performed in this work: continuous scouring and dyeing in one-bath I and II, simultaneous scouring and dyeing in one-bath I and II. The difference between process I and II is the existence of an after-treatment process in the scouring. Dyeing was performed with three major colors(red, blue, yellow) and black to investigate the dye-ability. The absorbency of scoured and dyed fabrics was measured using gravimetric absorbency testing system. The fabric weight loss was measured after the treatment. Although the color depth for the three major colored fabrics treated in a single-bath was lower than the fabric scoured and dyed separately, the fabrics dyed with black did not show much difference. In addition, the absorbency of fabric treated in a single-bath was higher than the fabric treated separately.

  • Recent settlements and sinkhole openings in urban areas have caused social problems such as damage to roads and structures, fear of the public, and loss of property. Several studies have demonstrated that surface subsidence and sinkhole opening are greatly affected by rainfall and rainfall intensity in urban areas. In this paper, we analyzed the relationship with the characteristics of recorded rainfall data using the ground subsidence database reported in major cities. The correlations were found using sedimentation and precipitation data from 2010 to 2014. The duration and intensity of a given precipitation have evolved to obtain an effect on ground sedimentation rate (SR). The results show that the relationship between SR and precipitation is asymptotic and can be modeled by a hyperbolic equation. Through this study, it is possible to predict the occurrence of ground subsidence due to precipitation in advance.

  • In this study, the results of applying cold weather concreting mixed with Accelerator for Freeze Protection(AFP) to full scale structures are presented. Since the determination of W/C and amount of AFP significantly have an effect on strength gain and protection of frost damage in early, a full investigation is needed to determine these values at stage of nux design. The flowability of fresh cold weather concreting with AFP was similar to the same W/C. Lower loss of workability and initial slump flow of concrete using superplasticizer of polycarboxylic ester than that of melamine sulphonate showed that polycarboxylic ester was more effective on elapsed time. Temperature histories of specimens located in insulation boxes at the site was similar to that of structures. Thus, it is cleared that simple adiabatic curing method is effective for evaluating in-place concrete strength than specimens cured by sealing method. The investigation results of development of compressive strength of cold weather concreting included AFP with curing methods by logistic curves indicated that AFP can be effective to gain strength at lower temperature than normal curing temperature. In field testing, vinyl sheets were placed over the concrete sections and AFP enabled concrete to gain $5N/{mm}^2$ to protect frost damage in early ages and specified compressive strength of concrete at 28 days under average temperature of $-2^{\circ}C$ (lowest temperature was $-12^{\circ}C$) during site application.

  • In this study, The report analysed the characteristics of power drop in solar cell through thermal shock test. The solar cells were tested 500 cycles in $-40^{\circ}C$ lowest temperature and $120^{\circ}C$ highest temperature by thermal shock test on ironbound conditions, that excerpted standard of PV Module(KS C IEC-61215). The result of the efficiency analysis through measure of I-V, efficiency of Cell decreased from 13.9% to 11.0% and decreasing rate was 20.9% after test. The result of the surface analysis through EL, solar cell has damage of gridfinger and ribbon joint. Cell cracks were founded in damage of cells through cross section of solar cells. Also, Fill factors were decreased from 72.3% to 62.0% after thermal shock test and decreasing rate is 11.8%. therefore, Yearly power drop is aggravated with facts that cell crack, damage of surface and power loss of cell by change of I-V characteristic curve with decreasing of parallel resistance.

  • Along with the urbanization, the risk of urban flooding due to climate change is increasing. Flood regulation, one of the ecosystem services, is implemented in the different level of function of flood risk mitigation by the type of ecosystem such as forests, arable land, wetlands etc. Land use changes due to development pressures have become an important factor in increasing the vulnerability by flash flood. This study has conducted evaluating the urban flood regulation service using InVEST UFRM(Urban Flood Risk Model). As a result of the simulation, the potential water retention by ecosystem type in the event of a flash flood according to RCP 4.5(10 year frequency) scenario was 1,569,611 tons in urbanized/dried areas, 907,706 tons in agricultural areas, 1,496,105 tons in forested areas, 831,705 tons in grasslands, 1,021,742 tons in wetlands, and 206,709 tons in bare areas, the water bodies was estimated to be 38,087 tons. In the case of more severe 100-year rainfall, 1,808,376 tons in urbanized/dried areas, 1,172,505 tons in agricultural areas, 2,076,019 tons in forests, 1,021,742 tons in grasslands, 47,603 tons in wetlands, 238,363 tons in bare lands, and 52,985 tons in water bodies. The potential economic damage from flood runoff(100 years frequency) is 122,512,524 thousand won in residential areas, 512,382,410 thousand won in commercial areas, 50,414,646 thousand won in industrial areas, 2,927,508 thousand won in Infrastructure(road), 8,907 thousand won in agriculture, Total of assuming a runoff of 50 mm(100 year frequency) was estimated at 688,245,997 thousand won. In a conclusion. these results provided an overview of ecosystem functions and services in terms of flood control, and indirectly demonstrated the possibility of using the model as a tool for policy decision-making. Nevertheless, in future research, related issues such as application of models according to various spatial scales, verification of difference in result values due to differences in spatial resolution, improvement of CN(Curved Number) suitable for the research site conditions based on actual data, and development of flood damage factors suitable for domestic condition for the calculation of economic loss.

  • Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are hematophagous arthropod vectors that transmit epizootic arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses). Arboviruses are recognized as causes of pregnancy loss, encephalomyelitis, and congenital malformations in ruminants. Therefore, continuous monitoring and control of Culicoides, which causes significant damage to industrial animals are necessary. We performed attraction and repellent tests in Culicoides using various essential oils, cow dung, and carbon dioxide (CO2). Culicoides tended to move more to cow dung (60.8%, P<0.0001) and CO2 (63.8%, P<0.01). To the essential oils as repellents, 26.1% (P<0.0001), 18.7% (P<0.001), and 25.5% (P<0.01) of the Culicoides moved to the lavender, lemongrass, and eucalyptus chamber, respectively. The Culicoides that moved to the 3 essential oils chambers showed markedly low activity. Collectively, it was showed that Culicoides tended to be attractive to cow dung and CO2, and repellent from the 3 essential oils.
