One of the main objectives of the U.S. Census Bureau is the proper estimation of median household income for small areas. These estimates have an important role in the formulation of various governmental decisions and policies. Since direct survey estimates are available annually for each state or county, it is desirable to exploit the longitudinal trend in income observations in the estimation procedure. In this study, we consider Fay-Herriot type small area models which include time-specific random effect to accommodate any unspecified time varying income pattern. Analysis is carried out in a hierarchical Bayesian framework using Markov chain Monte Carlo methodology. We have evaluated our estimates by comparing those with the corresponding census estimates of 1999 using some commonly used comparison measures. It turns out that among three types of time-specific random effects the small area model with a time series random walk component provides estimates which are superior to both direct estimates and the Census Bureau estimates.

The iterative calculation by least square method was used to determine the source location of acoustic emission in rock, as so called "traditional method". The results were compared with source coordinates infered from the application of neural network system for new input data, as so called "new method". Input data of the neural network were based on the time differences of longitudinal waves arrived from acoustic emission events at each transducer, the variation of longitudinal velocities at each stress level, and the coordinates of transducer as in the traditional method. The momentum back propagation neural network system adopted to determine source location, which consists of three layers, and has twenty-seven input processing elements. Applicability of the new method were identified, since the results of source location by the application of two methods were similarly concordant.
This study examined the role of ethnicity and extended family relationship in the longitudinal patterns of unmarried resident fathers' engagement with young children in the U.S. Using three waves of panel data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS), data obtained from 292 respondents were analyzed by the Linear Mixed Effects Regression (LMER) method. Findings suggested that Black unmarried resident fathers exhibited more engagement with their infants at age one than their White counterparts did, but the initial difference reversed by age five as a result of decreasing engagement among Black fathers over time and comparatively increasing engagement among Whites. Results also suggested that Black unmarried resident fathers with a high relationship level with their extended family members exhibited less engagement with their infants than Black fathers with a low relationship level, but the initial difference reversed by age five as a result of decreasing engagement among Black fathers with a low relationship level over time and comparatively increasing engagement among Black fathers with a high relationship level.
This study examines whether online game motivation, with social and expedition needs, are associated with the degree of loneliness among young adolescents. Using data from a survey of 2014 elementary-, middle- and high-school students in South Korea, a three-wave online survey was conducted to collect data from online players. Two latent growth cause-and-effect models were developed to test whether online game motivation influences degree of loneliness. Results showed that both social and expedition needs are positively associated with loneliness. This study contributes to the knowledge of the underlying needs for a player with loneliness and also highlights the social and expedition needs as potential therapeutic factors.
The purposes of this study were to verify the longitudinal mediating effects of work-family balance on the relationship of role recognition in the family, marital intimacy and job satisfaction of married women, and to introduce longitudinal mediating effects by using latent growth curve modeling and autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. The subjects were married women from the third year data of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Family. Structural equational models were conducted with Amos ver. 21.0. The major findings are as follows. First, the result of the longitudinal mediating effects of latent growth modeling is the rate of change of work-family balance mediated between the rate of change of role recognition in the family and the rate of change of job satisfaction, and the rate of change of work-family balance mediated between the rate of change of marital intimacy and the rate of change of job satisfaction. Second, when using the autoregressive cross-lagged modeling, the more role recognition and marital intimacy of third year were the more work-family balance of fourth year, job satisfaction of fifth year. In both models, work-family balance mediated between role recognition in the family, marital intimacy and job satisfaction. Therefore, through this study, mediating effects of work-family balance can be found that there was a longitudinal effects.
Cardiac myocytes are subjected to fluid shear stress during each contraction and relaxation. Under pathological conditions, such as valve disease, heart failure or hypertension, shear stress in cardiac chamber increases due to high blood volume and pressure. The shear stress induces proarrhythmic longitudinal global $Ca^{2+}$ waves in atrial myocytes. In the present study, we further explored underlying cellular mechanism for the shear stress-induced longitudinal global $Ca^{2+}$ wave in isolated rat atrial myocytes. A shear stress of ${\sim}16dyn/cm^2$ was applied onto entire single myocyte using pressurized fluid puffing. Confocal $Ca^{2+}$ imaging was performed to measure local and global $Ca^{2+}$ signals. Shear stress elicited longitudinally propagating global $Ca^{2+}$ wave (${\sim}80{\mu}m/s$). The occurrence of shear stress-induced atrial $Ca^{2+}$ wave was eliminated by the inhibition of ryanodine receptors (RyRs) or inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors ($IP_3Rs$). In addition, pretreatment of phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitor U73122, but not its inactive analogue U73343, abolished the generation of longitudinal $Ca^{2+}$ wave under shear stress. Our data suggest that shear-induced longitudinal $Ca^{2+}$ wave may be induced by $Ca^{2+}$-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release through the RyRs which is triggered by $PLC-IP_3R$ signaling in atrial myocytes.

This paper describes a predictive fault diagnosis algorithm for autonomous vehicles based on a kinematic model that uses a sliding mode observer. To ensure the safety of autonomous vehicles, reliable information about the environment and vehicle dynamic states is required. A predictive algorithm that can interactively diagnose longitudinal environment and vehicle acceleration information is proposed in this paper to evaluate the reliability of sensors. To design the diagnosis algorithm, a longitudinal kinematic model is used based on a sliding mode observer. The reliability of the fault diagnosis algorithm can be ensured because the sliding mode observer utilized can reconstruct the relative acceleration despite faulty signals in the longitudinal environment information. Actual data based performance evaluations are conducted with various fault conditions for a reasonable performance evaluation of the predictive fault diagnosis algorithm presented in this paper. The evaluation results show that the proposed diagnosis algorithm can reasonably diagnose the faults in the longitudinal environment and acceleration information for all fault conditions.

In the advanced information age, learning is an activity in which learners access information resources through computers and Internet to acquire and evaluate information on their own. The emergence of an online learning platform based on the fourth industrial revolution technology is developing into an environment in which elementary and secondary learners learn and study based on constructivism learning theory. In the online learning environment, the researches on the information retrieval ability of the elementary and secondary learners and the self-directed learning ability were found to be highly related. However, it is necessary to analyze the relation between information retrieval ability and self-directed learning ability through a cross-sectional study that is limited to specific curriculum and contents and expands the longitudinal research. In this study, the panel data of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study collected over 8 years are used to find the difference in self-directed learning ability according to the longitudinal pattern of information retrieval ability and frequency.
This study examines the longitudinal effect of goal perception, mathematics class factors(perceptions about mathematics teachers (PMT), mathematics classroom attitude), and mathematics academic achievement. This study consists of three research models. First, we examined the longitudinal change of goal perception, perceptions about mathematics teachers (PMT), mathematics classroom attitude, and mathematics academic achievement using latent growth curve modeling. Secondly, the slope of PMT is a critical mediator between the slope of goal perception and the slope of mathematics academic achievement. Finally, the slope of mathematics classroom attitude is a critical mediator between the slope of goal perception and the slope of mathematics academic achievement. Data were extracted from Seoul Education Longitudinal Study from 2010 to 2012 (in three waves), and the analysis used by middle school students, measured by 4163 students of the three-wave surveys. Latent growth modeling was applied to verify the research problems. The results of the research are as follows. First, the slope of goal perception had positive and significant effects on the slope of PMT and mathematics classroom attitude, respectively. Second, the slope of PMT and mathematics classroom attitude had positively significant effects on the slope of mathematics academic achievement. Finally, it was confirmed that the slopes of PMT and mathematics classroom attitude are critical mediators between the slope of goal perception and the slope of mathematics academic achievement.
Logistic models with a random intercept are useful to analyze longitudinal binary data. Traditionally, the random intercept of the logistic model is assumed to be parametric (such as normal distribution) and is also assumed to be independent to variables. Such assumptions are very strong and restricted for application to real data. Recently, Garcia and Ma (2015) derived semiparametric efficient estimators for logistic model with a random intercept without these assumptions. Their estimator shows the consistency where we do not assume any parametric form for the random intercept. In addition, the method is computationally simple. In this paper, we apply this method to analyze toenail infection data. We compare the semiparametric estimator with maximum likelihood estimator, penalized quasi-likelihood estimator and hierarchical generalized linear estimator.
