  • Artificial neural networks are used as a useful tool in distinct fields of civil engineering these days. In order to control long-term quality of Self-Compacting Semi-Lightweight Concrete (SCSLC), the 90 days compressive strength is considered as a key issue in this paper. In fact, combined artificial neural networks are used to predict the compressive strength of SCSLC at 28 and 90 days. These networks are able to re-establish non-linear and complex relationships straightforwardly. In this study, two types of neural networks, including Radial Basis and Multilayer Perceptron, were used. Four groups of concrete mix designs also were made with two water to cement ratios (W/C) of 0.35 and 0.4, as well as 10% of cement weight was replaced with silica fume in half of the mixes, and different amounts of superplasticizer were used. With the help of rheology test and compressive strength results at 7 and 14 days as inputs, the neural networks were used to estimate the 28 and 90 days compressive strengths of above-mentioned mixes. It was necessary to add the 14 days compressive strength in the input layer to gain acceptable results for 90 days compressive strength. Then proper neural networks were prepared for each mix, following which four existing networks were combined, and the combinatorial neural network model properly predicted the compressive strength of different mix designs.

  • Fly ash (called FA hereafter) that results from thermal power plants is a long-term strength improving substance with reactivity to pozzolan and has been used for long. However, large amount of FA shows many advantages such as reduction of hydratio energy, long-term improvement in strength and economic feasibility and also has difficulties from reduction in initial strength and durability. In a preceding study, fine particle cement was applied to test the effects on initial strength. Therefore in this study, the effects of fine particle cement on the quality of FA concrete were reviewed. The results can be summarized as follows. Liquidity was increased by the most at FC substitution ratio of 15%. Air capacity was reduced according to increasing substitution ratio of FA and FC. Compressive strength showed high strength expression at all ages when FC was substituted at 45%. Synthesizing the above results, appropriate mixing of FC in FA concrete can improve liquidity, reduce unit quantity and show improvement in strength. In particular, mixed use of FC seems effective in improving early quality of concrete.

  • At central synapses, activity-dependent synaptic plasticity has a crucial role in information processing, storage, learning, and memory under both physiological and pathological conditions. One widely accepted model of learning mechanism and information processing in the brain is Hebbian Plasticity: long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). LTP and LTD are respectively activity-dependent enhancement and reduction in the efficacy of the synapses, which are rapid and synapse-specific processes. A number of recent studies have a strong focal point on the critical importance of another distinct form of synaptic plasticity, non-Hebbian plasticity. Non-Hebbian plasticity dynamically adjusts synaptic strength to maintain stability. This process may be very slow and occur cell-widely. By putting them all together, this mini review defines an important conceptual difference between Hebbian and non-Hebbian plasticity.

  • Spinal dorsal horn nociceptive neurons have been shown to undergo long-term synaptic plasticity, including long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). Here, we focused on the spinothalamic tract (STT) neurons that are the main nociceptive neurons projecting from the spinal cord to the thalamus. Optical technique using fluorescent dye has made it possible to identify the STT neurons in the spinal cord. Evoked fast mono-synaptic, excitatory postsynaptic currents (eEPSCs) were measured in the STT neurons. Time-based tetanic stimulation (TBS) was employed to induce long-term potentiation (LTP) in the STT neurons. Coincident stimulation of both pre- and postsynaptic neurons using TBS showed immediate and persistent increase in AMPA receptor-mediated EPSCs. LTP can also be induced by postsynaptic spiking together with pharmacological stimulation using chemical NMDA. TBS-induced LTP observed in STT neurons was blocked by internal BAPTA, or $Ni^{2+}$, a T-type VOCC blocker. However, LTP was intact in the presence of L-type VOCC blocker. These results suggest that long-term plastic change of STT neurons requires NMDA receptor activation and postsynaptic calcium but is differentially sensitive to T-type VOCCs.

  • The purpose of this research is to seek properties of flowing light-weight aggregate concrete and possibility of application. The experimental analysis results by using light-weight aggregate and industrial waste such flyash, furnace slag are as follow. 1) The research shows that flowing light-weight aggregate concrete of slump 23~27cm, slump flow 58~69 cm is possible, but material segregation is appeared above slump 26.5cm and slump flow 65 cm. 2) If mixing ratio of flyash is increase, strength deterioration is about 25 % in early age. It showed that effectiveness of long time strength improvement because strength manifestation ratio is above 95% in a long term. 3) This research showed possibility of substitution of blast furnace slag because strength deterioration by using mixing of furnace slag was appeared small deterioration range as below 10 %. 4) Each experimental compressive strength ratios were 77 %(1st week), 86 %(2nd week), 109 %(8th week), 115 %(13th week), 125 % (26th week) on the basis of 28 days. If mixing ratio of flyash is increase, long term strength increase ratio is improved.

  • Long-term deformation of a steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) column is different from that of a reinforced concrete (RC) column due to the different moisture distribution. Wide-flange steel in an SRC column obstructs diffusion and makes long-term deformation slower. Previous studies analyzed the characteristics of long-term deformation of SRC columns. In this study, an additional experiment is conducted to more precisely investigate the effect of wide-flange steel on the long-term deformation of SRC columns. Long-term deformation, especially creep of SRC columns with various types of wide-flange steel, is tested. Wide-flange steel for the experiment is made of thin acrylic panels that can block diffusion but does not have strength, because the main purpose of this study is to exclusively demonstrate the long-term deformation of concrete caused by moisture diffusion, not by the reinforcement ratio. Experimental results show that the long-term deformation of a SRC column develops slower than that in a RC column, and it is slower as the wide-flange steel hinders diffusion more. These experimental results can be used for analytical prediction of long-term deformation of various SRC columns. An example of the analytical prediction is provided. According to the experimental and analytical results, it is clear that a new prediction model for long-term deformation of SRC columns should be developed in further studies.

  • Domestic practices in shotcrete use have developed in many respects even now, but it still has issues about material, construction, quality standard and so on. In overseas, the construction using high strength shotcrete with $39.2{\sim}58.8 MPa$ of compressive strength is becoming common based on the shotcrete technology of high strength and durability. However, domestic shotcrete design strength is low at around 20.6 MPa of compressive strength and a long term durability is also insufficient. In this paper, field tests using high-quality additives and accelerators were performed to obtain the improvement of shotcrete strength and EFNARC standard was used to evaluate the field test results. In addition, deterioration test combined with the freezing-thawing and carbonation was also performed in order to investigate a long-term durability of high-strength shotcrete. As a result of the field test, the promotion ratio of early strength was $90{\sim}97%$ in case of using alkali-free accelerators. And the compressive strength of the shotcrete using Micro-silica fume was $45.2{\sim}55.8MPa$ and flexible strength was $5.01{\sim}6.66MPa$, so the promotion ratio of strength was $37{\sim}79%$ and $17{\sim}61%$ respectively. The promotion effect of strength by silica fine additives ratio of $7.5{\sim}10%$ for cement mass was much superior to the other cases. It was especially examined that using Micro-silica fume reduced deterioration due to mixed steel fiber and improved a long-term durability of shotcrete.
