An Economic Analysis of Transportation Equipments at Container Terminals

  • The motivation of this study is the recent advancement of the Straddle Carrier (S/C). Previously Straddle Carrier (S/C) system was used focusing on container lift on/off due to its lower driving speed than that of (Y/T). Shuttle Carrier is evaluated as an upgraded Straddle Carrier. Recently, however, the driving speed of (S/C) has been improved to the level of Yard Tractor and Trailer systems (Y/T), which is 30Km per hour which makes (S/C) qualified as terminal in-yard transportation equipment. This paper, therefore, aims to evaluate three types of terminal in-yard transportation equipments such as (Y/T), (AGV) and the advanced (S/C) from economic perspective. The results revealed that by observing the total costs of equipment, (S/C) is a cheaper option than (Y/T) over 20 years, and than (AGV) over 6 years.

  • Most q the domestic container terminals are inferior to throughput q container. The reason why they have the difference between the handling capacity q planed quay and its real. By putting into quay handling equipment, the productivity of quay can be improved, waiting rate q the ship can be lowed. This paper suggests more resonable terminal construction, throughout comparing with previous construction way, improved handling capacity and the economical efficiency of equipment costs, labor costs, construction costs, operation costs on change of terminal size by adding the equipment.

Design and Implementation of the Simulator for Evaluating the Performance of Container Cranes (컨테이너크레인 성능평가를 위한 시뮬레이터 설계 및 구현)

  • According to the increase of container flows and the appearance of large-sized container vessels, the container handling equipment in ports is evolving continuously. This research introduces the simulation model for evaluating in detail the mechanical productivity of container cranes. The model considers a single trolley and dual trolleys as the mechanism of a container crane and a single lift, a twin lift, and a tandem lift as the spreader type of it. Additionally, the detail specifications such as the dimension and the speed of a container crane are inputted and the kinematic characteristics of it are simulated. The model also considers the size of a vessel, the storage position of containers in the vessel, and the weight of containers as external physical constraints. Experimental conditions can be configured conveniently because various parameters in the model are separated. Moreover, the model can accommodate flexibly new equipment types and the changes of the existing equipment because it is designed and developed in object-oriented concept.

Evaluation on the Procurement Logistics of Automobile Factories Based on the Fuzzy-AHP-TOPSIS (Fuzzy-AHP-TOPSIS를 활용한 자동차 공장의 조달물류 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Automobile industry is facing a variety of risks, including the rise of international oil price and the increase of car prices. In addition to the government's deregulation, efforts should be made to improve management aiming at higher production efficiency. In this study, we established a model for evaluating the procurement logistics based on the Fuzzy-AHP-TOPSIS by using the factors that are actually used in real companies aimed at the improvement of procurement logistics. A total of three automobile factories of Company G were chosen as the evaluation subject. In the result of the Fuzzy-AHP analysis that was conducted on a sample of three car factories, solving the long-term quality problems, minimizing the stop time due to the shortage of materials, preventing the of equipment accident, and solving the short-term quality problems were proven to be the most important factors. TOPSIS analysis result indicated that Factory B had the best procurement logistics. Our study has significance that it can contribute to the improvement of efficiency in the automobile industry as the evaluation model suggested in this study can be used for regular evaluation related to the procurement logistics in the future.

  • This research connected network equipment, including CCTV, PAGA, IP-PBX, and Legacy, in order to enable the operation and configuration of internal IP-based network equipment in maritime plants and vessels, both in the field and from remote places, and to allow for the support of remotely controlling such equipment. It also realized an operating program for the integrated network equipment management system to enable the monitoring and control of equipment status, operation condition, and notifications from distant places. By applying the operating program to satellite stations and vessels sailing on the sea, a performance test was conducted to evaluate data loss and transmission/reception delay in the communication section between the land and vessels. As a result, this research verified the normal operation of CCTV control and of real-time monitoring and control of the network equipment, including PAGA, IP-PBX, and Legacy under the FBB and MVSAT environments. It was observed that the transmission of CCTV video images with a large volume of data as well as the transmission and reception of voice data were found to be slightly delayed, indicating the need to develop technology to compress and convert data for real-time transmission and reception.

  • This study aims to provide a real-time information to the driver by effectively operating the advanced safety device attached to the freight vehicle, thereby minimizing insecure behavior of the driver such as speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden braking, And improve driving habits to prevent accidents and save energy. Advanced safety equipment is a device that warns the driver that the vehicle leaves the driving lane regardless of the intention of the driver and reduces the risk of traffic accidents by mitigating or avoiding collision by detecting a frontal collision during driving.The main contents of this report are as follows: In case of installing a warning device on a lane departing vehicle (excluding a light vehicle) and a lorry or special vehicle with a total weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes, the driver must continue to operate unless the driver releases the function.In addition, when the automatic emergency braking system is installed, the structure should be such that the braking device is operated automatically after warning the driver when the risk of collision with the running or stopped vehicle in the same direction is detected in front of the driving lane.

On the Theoretical Solution and Application to Container Loading Problem using Normal Distribution Based Model (정규 분포 모델을 이용한 화물 적재 문제의 이론적 해법 도출 및 활용)

  • This paper introduces a container loading problem and proposes a theoretical approach that efficiently solves it. The problem is to determine a proper weight of products loaded on a container that is delivered by third party logistics (3PL) providers. When the company pre-loads products into a container, typically one or two days in advance of its delivery date, various truck weights of 3PL providers and unpredictability of the randomness make it difficult for the company to meet the total weight regulation. Such a randomness is mainly due to physical difference of trucks, fuel level, and personalized equipment/belongings, etc. This paper provides a theoretical methodology that uses historical shipping data to deal with the randomness. The problem is formulated as a stochastic optimization where the truck randomness is reflected by a theoretical distribution. The data analytics solution of the problem is derived, which can be easily applied in practice. Experiments using practical data reveal that the suggested approach results in a significant cost reduction, compared to a simple average heuristic method. This study provides new aspects of the container loading problem and the efficient solving approach, which can be widely applied in diverse industries using 3PL providers.

  • In order to solve the rapidly increasing domestic delivery volume and various problems in the recent metropolitan area, domestic researchers are conducting research on the development of "Urban Logistics System Using Underground Space" using existing urban railway facilities in the city. Safety analysis and scenario analysis should be performed for the safe system design of the new concept logistics system, but the scenario analysis techniques performed in previous studies so far do not have standards and are defined differently depending on the domain, subject, or purpose. In addition, it is necessary to improve the difficulty of clearly defining the control structure and the omission of UCA in the existing STPA safety analysis. In this study, an improved scenario table is proposed for the AGV horizontal transport device, which is a key equipment of an urban logistics system using underground space, and a process model is proposed by linking systematic STPA safety analysis and scenario analysis, and UCA and Control Structure Guidelines are provided to create a safety analysis.

A Study on the Improvement of Life Safety Code for Logistics Warehouse Facilities (물류창고 시설의 인명안전기준 개선 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The number of fires in the Korean distribution warehouse increased by about 350 from 1,070 in 2014 to 1,416 in 2020. In addition, the fire load increases with the scale of the distribution warehouse, and even if the automatic sprinkler operates, there is a limit to the direct intrusion of the water source into the ignition source, and the detector is often installed on a high ceiling. The sensing time is often delayed. In order to improve the fire safety of such distribution warehouses, the US NFPA stipulates in detail the contents related to the facility, such as sprinkler water discharge standards, rack-type warehouse installation height restrictions, and regulations on collection and equipment. However, in Japan, the goods loaded inside the distribution warehouse are not classified in detail, and it is considered that the fire safety for the distribution warehouse is low due to the relaxation regulations of the fire prevention section. Therefore, in this study, common problems are classified into material, spatial, and safety management characteristics through the cases of distribution warehouse fires that occurred in Korea and abroad, and the problems related to distribution warehouses in Korea and abroad are compared and analyzed. And present basic materials for improving the life safety standards of future distribution warehouse facilities.

  • Facility layout is the early stage of system design that requires a mid-term or long-term plan. Since improper facility layout might incur substantial logistics cost including material handling and re-installment costs, due consideration must be given to decisions on facility layout. Facility layout is concerned with low to arrange equipment necessary for production in a given space. Its objective is to minimize the sum of all the products of each equipment's amount of flow multiplied by distance. Facility layout also is related to the issue of NP-complete, i.e., calculated amounts exponentially increase with the increase of the number of equipment. This study discusses Hybrid GA developed, as an algorithm for facility layout, to solve the above-mentioned problems. The algorithm, which is designed to efficiently place equipment, automatically produces a horizontal passageway by the block, if a designer provides the width and length of the space to be handled. In addition, this study demonstrates the validity of the Algorithm by comparing with existing algorithms that have been developed. We present a Hybrid GA approach to the facility layout problem that improves on existing work in terms of solution quality and method. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is able to produce better solution quality and more practical layouts than the ones obtained by applying existing algorithms.
