  • As wireless connectivity is integrated into many handheld devices, streaming multimedia content among mobile ad-hoc peers is becoming a popular application. In this paper, we propose a dynamic service replication algorithm for providing guaranteed continuous streaming services to all nodes in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). First, a MANET is comprised of logical grid hierarchy, and a streaming service is replicated to a lower server region of the logical grid hierarchy by considering the link availability between a mobile node and the streaming server within a server region or the popularity of the streaming service. We evaluate analytically the performance of the proposed algorithm, and compared with that of existing Qin's algorithm. Evaluation results show that our algorithm can achieve better streaming performance than Qin's algorithm. Therefore, the proposed algorithm not only improves the sharing availability of replicated streaming services but also controls efficiently the number of streaming service replications.

  • A high throughput parallel decoding method is developed for context-based adaptive variable length codes. In this paper, several new design ideas are devised and implemented for scalable parallel processing, a reduction in area, and a reduction in power requirements. First, simplified logical operations instead of memory lookups are used for parallel processing. Second, the codes are grouped based on their lengths for efficient logical operation. Third, up to M bits of the input stream can be analyzed simultaneously. For comparison, we designed a logical-operation-based parallel decoder for M=8 and a conventional parallel decoder. High-speed parallel decoding becomes possible with our method. In addition, for similar decoding rates (1.57 codes/cycle for M=8), our new approach uses 46% less chip area than the conventional method.

  • This paper is proposed to present elementary algorithmic thinking-based Squeak E-toy programming problems for flowchart-based programming educations without programming languages in elementary programming educations. Furthermore, this paper proves the validity and effects of developed Squeak E-toy programming problems through measurement analyses of metacognition and GALT logical thinking ability experiments by comparing with the language-based traditional programming education.

  • Corporate databases are usually denormalized, due to the data modelers' impetuous belief that denormalization could improve system performance. By providing a logical insight into denormalization, this paper attempts to prevent every database modeler from falling into the denormalization pit. We indicate loopholes in the denormalization advocates' assertions, and then present four criteria to analyze the usefulness and validity of denormalization; 1) the level of concurrency among transactions, 2) the database independence of the application program, 3) the independence between the logical design and the physical one, and 4) the overhead cost to maintain database integrity under various query patterns. This paper also includes experimental results to evaluate performance of denormalized and fully normalized structures under various workloads.

  • In this study, Pavement Management System(PMS) was developed to overcome the unscientific pavement management limitations of the past. PMS program is economic, efficient and scientific. Also, it produces the best maintenance method through exact judgement and logical analysis of pavement condition. First of all, the logical algorithm, that is such as investigation and analysis of pavement, detailed naked eye investigation and the estimation for whole system etc., was composed on the basis of the domestic and the outside data on PMS and pavement condition data of Seoul metropolitan. And then it was verified that this algorithm is suitable through the research examples of PMS data and the results of detailed naked eye investigation. Also, Geographic Information System(GIS) was integrated on PMS program. Therefore, PMS program was developed so as to use easily on the basis of the logical algorithm.

  • Discriminant analysis is a method to relate whether the objects have a specific characteristic or not with their 'continuous' attribute values and, for given objects, to estimate whether they have a specific characteristic or not by their values of discriminant scores gotten from their attribute values. The author developed the new 'computational' method of discriminant analysis without specific hypotheses or assumptions and, by this new method, we can find 'feasible' solutions under the conditions required by our actual problems. In this paper, the author tried to apply this new method to the discrimination of logical relations. If this trial could be a success, we can apply this new method of discriminant analysis to the problems about relating the specific characteristic of the objects with their 'discrete' attribute values. The result was successful and the applicability of discriminant analysis could be expanded as a method for constructing the models for "estimating impressions".

  • Piaget's revolutionary study on the cognitive development of children has focused on the development of logic. Logical operations and a variety of classifications based on the set of accepted rules involve convergent thinking. Children and adults have logical and creative thinking which deal with a reality of thinking. This study aims to examine a cognitive structure of students, which is closely related to the Piaget's cognitive development theories of students when creative thinking. Students were given an open mathematical problem and were expected to be able to take advantage of sensitivity, fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration which can be seen as clearly of their structure cognitive.

  • CNC machine tool is assembled by central processor, PLC(Programmable Logic Controller), and actuator. The sequential control of machine generally controlled by a PLC. The main fault occured at PLC in 3 control parts. In LC faults, operational fault is charged over 70%. This paper describes diagnosis model and data processing for remote monitoring and diagnosis system in machine tools with open architecture controller. Two diagnostic models based on the ladder diagram. Logical Diagnosis Model(LDM), Sequential Diagnosis Model(SDM), are proposed. Data processing structure is proposed ST(Structured Text) based on IEC1131-3. The faults from CNC are received message form open architecture controller and faults from PLC are gathered by sequential data.. To do this, CNC and PLC's logical and sequential data is constructed database.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the STEAM educational program based on the computer programming. STEAM education has been recently attracted to a lot of people. We had a focus of computer science in STEM fields. We used the programming language f or learning KODU. We selected appropriate topics for STEAM education and learning programming. We developed the educational program of 30 hours about selected topics and had classes for 4th and 5th grade elementary students. In order to verify the effectiveness of the educational program, we analyzed the results of pre- and posttest about GALT(Group Assessment of Logical Thinking), TTCT(Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking), science-related affective domain, and mathematical interests and attitudes tests. In the analysis results, the education program we developed had positive impacts on creativity, logical thinking, and science-related affective domain of elementary school students.

  • This paper discusses jLogic, a mathematical logic education software developed by the author. jLogic is basically a MS-Windows based software that can construct first-order models, formulas and thet their satisfiablity. Logical formulas are easily input by a "keyboard" maintained by jLogic. A special finite model, called the "Toy World" can be visually cinstructed and modified. The user is supposed to answer the following 3 questions about the selected logical expression: 1. Is it a grammatically correct logical formula? 2. Is it a sentence that has a definite truth value? 3. Is th sentence true or false? When the user inputs his answer in the "Inspector window" and then presses the OK button, jLogic instantly tests the validity of the answer and tells the user the result. jLogic is freely downloaded from http://gauss.kyungpook.ac.kr/~jlogic/
