  • This paper describes extended fault location algorithm using estimated remote source impedance. The method uses data only at the local end and the sequence current distribution factors for more accurate estimation. The proposed algorithm can respond to variation of the local and remote source impedance. Therefore, this method is especially useful for transmission lines interconnected to a wind farm that the source impedance varies continuously. The proposed algorithm is very insensitive to the variation in fault distance and fault resistance. The simulation results have shown the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of number and location of finger joints on the bending strength of glue-laminated lumbers. Urea resin adhesives were used in this experiment and the resin content was 70% for cold pressing. The lamina were edge-jointed and end-jointed. The specimen were composed of one or three layers. The obtained results are summarized as follows; The effects of finger joints on the decrease of bending strength of glue laminated woods were different according to the number and location of finger joints. The decrease of MOR was highest on the middle position of laminated woods. The effects of several arrangements of finger joints on the bending strength of glue laminated woods showed on Figure 7 and 8. The variance of thickness-laminating on the bending strength of glue laminated woods were larger than those of width-laminating.

  • In case of considering the shear effect, the complete solutions are obtained for dynamic plastic response of a rigid, perfectly plastic hinged-free beam, of which one end is hinged and the other end free, subjected to a transverse strike by a travelling rigid mass at an arbitrary location along its span. Special attention is paid to new deformation mechanisms due to shear sliding on both sides of the rigid mass and the plastic energy dissipation. The dimensionless numerical results demonstrate that three parameters, i.e., mass ratio, impact position of mass, as well as the non-dimensional fully plastic shear force, have significant influence on the partitioning of dissipated energy and failure mode of the hingedfree beam. The shear effect can never be negligible when the mass ratio is comparatively small and the impact location of mass is close to the hinged end.

  • Recently, augmented reality has been proved immensely useful on a day to day basis when tied with location-based technology. In this paper, we present a new method for displaying augmented reality contents on mobile devices. We add 3D models on the view of the camera and use location-based services, motion sensors to calculate the transformation of models. Instead of remaining at a fixed position on camera view while moving around a 3D model, the model rotates on display in the opposite direction that the user is walking. We also design client as a ubiquitous client to reduce constraints on disk space and memory capacity on mobile devices. Implementation results show effective use in creating GPS-based 3D view augmented reality contents for Smart Mobile Devices.

  • In this paper, the confirmation method of target detection for the vehicle mounted metal detector (MD) has been described. The vehicle mounted MD with the arrayed 6 coils to detect the width of 2.4 m was demonstrated. It is important and necessary to inform the location of the objects detected by the MD. The confirmation method of target detection was verified by using the MD GUI and the analysis of the receive signal processing. The receive signal processing is performed by comparing the threshold and the difference of the signal calibrated at initial location and the signal detected at present location.

  • This paper presents a new numerical algorithm for fault location estimation and for faults recognition based on the synchronized phasors. The proposed algorithm is based on the synchronized phasor measured from the synchronized PMUs installed at two-terminals of the transmission lines. In order to discriminate the fault type, the arc voltage wave shape is modeled numerically on the basis of a great number of arc voltage records obtained by transient recorder. From the calculated arc voltage amplitude it can make a decision whether the fault is permanent or transient. The results of the proposed algorithm testing through computer simulation are given.

  • The object of this study is to investigate the effect of compounded welding by using an acoustic emission (AE) signals and doing a source location for weld heat affected zone (HAZ) through tensile testing. This study was carried out a SM 490A high tension steel for electronic shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), $CO_2$ gas arc welding and TIG welding. Data displays are based on the measured parameters of the AE signals, along with environmental variables such as time and load. These history plots are displays showing the chronological course of the test. Also, source location gives the X- and Y-coordinates of the AE source.

  • In excavating tunnels, shield tunneling machines having many cutters on their cutter planes are used. Not many observation data being available in the detection system, optimal observation policy is very important. From this viewpoint, we previously considered the optimal location of acoustic sensors on the cutter plane and also the optimal observation policy for the case where three receiving transducers were used, and showed that the optimal sensor location was given as arbitrary equally-spaced points on the cutter plane circle, and that the optimal rotating angles were also found to be arbitrary. In application, however, it is often difficult to locate sensors at arbitrary positions or to use three sensors from the viewpoints of machine structure and cost. This paper considers the optimal observation policy for detecting anomlous plane objects for the case where two receiving transducers are used and the case where three receiving transducers are located only on a diameter of the cutter plane.

  • Density of Phase-Change Memory (PCM) devices has been doubled through the employment of multi-level cell (MLC) technology. However, this doubled-capacity comes in the expense of severe performance degradation, as compared to the conventional single-level cell (SLC) PCM. This negative effect on the performance of the MLC PCM detracts from the potential benefits of the MLC PCM. This paper introduces an efficient way of minimizing the performance degradation while maximizing the capacity benefits of the MLC PCM. To this end, we propose a location-aware hybrid management of SLC and MLC in compressed PCM main memory systems. Our trace-driven simulations using real application workloads demonstrate that the proposed technique enhances the performance and energy consumption by 45.1% and 46.5%, respectively, on the average, over the conventional technique that only uses a MLC PCM.
