In this paper, a new method composed of discrete element method and genetic algorithm has been introduced to estimate the safety factor and search critical slip surface on slope stability analysis. In case of estimating the safety factor, conventional methods of slope analysis based on the limit equilibrium do not satisfy the overall equilibrium condition; they must make assumptions regarding the inclination and location of the interstice forces. An alternative slope analysis method based on the discrete element method, which can consider the compatibility condition between force and displacement, is presented. Real-coded genetic algorithm is applied to the search for the minimum factor of safety in proposed analysis method. This search method is shown to be more robust than simple optimization routines, which are apt to find local minimum. Examples are also shown to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method.
This is a leading study to replace the structural analysis methodology on the specific traditional joint by a numerical analysis. Tests were carried out to test the compressive methodologies with the numerical results. The Japanese larch was used as a sample. The Orthotropic property of wood was specifically considered for the finite element numerical analysis. Linear numerical analysis and non-linear numerical analysis for the BEAM element and the two SOLID elements of ANSYS were used to analyze the compressive performance. In addition, more finely divided elements were used to raise the accuracy of the numerical result. Finally, the statistically significant differences were tested between that of the analytical and numerical results. It could be concluded that the SOLID 64 element shows the most optimum result when the non-linear analysis with the more finely divided element was used. However, finely dividing of the element is a considerable time consuming process, and it is quite difficult to raise the accuracy of the non-linear numerical analysis. Therefore, if considering the vertical displacement to be of the only interest, the BEAM element is more efficient than the SOLID element because the BEAM element is reflected as a simple line, which is less time consuming and difficult in dividing the elements. But, the BEAM element cannot accurately model the knot as a strength defect factor which is an important property in the orthotropic property of wood. Therefore, the SOLID element should be used to model the strength defect factor, knot, as it can be efficiently applied on the structural size flexure member which could be more strongly effected by the knot. In addition, it is useful at times when the failure types of members are to be more closely investigated, as the SOLID element is able to examine the local stress distribution of the member. The conclusion drawn by this study is of the good concordance between analytical results and numerical results of compressive wood members, but how orthotropic properties should only be considered. The numerical analysis on the specific Korean traditional joints will be based on the current study results.

Post-earthquake fire (PEF) can lead to a rapid collapse of buildings that have been partially damaged as a result of a prior earthquake. Almost all standards and codes for the design of structures against earthquake ignore the risk of PEF, and thus buildings designed using those codes could be too weak when subjected to a fire after an earthquake. An investigation based on sequential analysis inspired by FEMA356 is performed here on the immediate occupancy (IO), life safety (LS) and collapse prevention (CP) performance levels of two portal frames, after they are pushed to arrive at a certain level of displacement corresponding to the mentioned performance level. This investigation is followed by a fire analysis of the damaged frames, examining the time taken for the damaged frames to collapse. As a point of reference, a fire analysis is also performed for undamaged frames and before the occurrence of earthquake. The results indicate that while there is minor difference between the fire resistances of the fire-alone situation and the frames pushed to the IO level of performance, a notable difference is observed between the fire-alone analysis and the frames pushed to arrive at LS and CP levels of performance and exposed to PEF. The results also show that exposing only the beams to fire results in a higher decline of the fire resistance, compared to exposing only the columns to fire. Furthermore, the results show that the frames pushed to arrive at LS and CP levels of performance collapse in a global collapse mode laterally, whereas at the IO level of performance and fire-alone situation, the collapse mechanism is mostly local through the collapse of beams. Whilst the investigation is conducted for a certain class of portal frames, the results confirm the need for the incorporation of PEF into the process of analysis and design, and provide some quantitative measures on the level of associated effects.

In Hong Kong, large-diameter (${\ge}600mm$) bored piles and large-section excavated rectangular barrettes are commonly used to support tall buildings to resist both vertical and horizontal loads. These piles and barrettes penetrate through and may found in saprolitic soils and decomposed rocks. Generally, the design of these large bored piles and barrettes involves considerable amount of uncertainty and design parameters must usually be verified by field tests. In this paper, over 50 full-scale load tests on large-diameter bored piles and over 15 large-section of rectangular barrettes in Hong Kong are reviewed and interpreted critically, in particular the degree of mobilisation of side shear resistance using a mobilization rating (MR) factor and a displacement index (DI) for floating bored piles and barrettes and rock-socketed piles, respectively. The author was heavily involved with many of these load tests. The diameter of the bored piles tested ranges from 0.6m to 1.8m and the depth varies from 12m to 75m. Sizes of barrettes critically reviewed include $2.2m{\times}0.6m,\;2.2m{\times}0.8m,\;2.8m{\times}0.8m\;and\;2.8m{\times}1.0m$ (on plan) and the depth varies from 36m and 63m. Based on these field tests, a new failure load criterion for large-diameter bored piles and barrettes is developed and proposed. The side shear resistance of the bored piles and barrettes is quantitatively analyzed with respect to local displacements, standard penetration tests, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) for rock sockets and using the effective stress principle. In addition, the effects of construction including post-grouting, construction time, side scraping and excavation tools on side shear resistance are investigated and reported.

In the present study, a numerical analysis of an injection molding process was conducted for predicting the mold deformation considering non-Newtonian flow, heat transfer, and structural behavior. The accurate prediction of mold deformation during the filling stage is important to successfully design and manufacture a precision injection mold. While the local mold deformation can be caused by various factors, a pressure induced by the polymer melt is considered to be one of the most significant ones. In this regard, the numerical simulation considering both the melt filling and the mold deformation was carried out. A mold core for a 2D axisymmetric center-gated disk was used for the demonstration of the present study. The flow behavior inside the mold cavity and temperature distribution were analyzed along with the core displacement. Also, a Taguchi method was employed to investigate the influence of the relevant parameters including flow velocity, mold core temperature, and melt temperature.

An accelerated ultrasonic fatigue test (UFT) was used for analyzing very high cycle fatigue (VHCF, $N_f$ > $10^7$) behaviors of a specimen with a test resonance of 20 kHz. Using the finite element method (FEM), the dynamic behaviors of the specimen was studied by calculating the stresses along its gauge portion, with displacement. The shape of gauge portion profile was assumed to be a hyperbolic according to the stress equation of the UFT. However, as the specimen used in the test had a circular arc profile, the FEM was used for studying the local stresses for two cases of the gauge profile. The results were compared with those obtain from the stress equation of the UFT. The dynamic behavior of the gauge portion could be understood for further comparison with the actual results.
A clinical case of CheMletietlo infestation on a dog born and raised in Korea is reported. A three-year old female Whippet was hospitalized due to a multiple fracture and displacement of the left scapula caused by a recent car accident The mite infestation was not noticed at the time of hospitalization. The dog underwent multiple operations involving internal fixation of the fractured scapula with wire and a plate, followed by extensive chemotherapy with antibiotics and prednisolone. After two months of hospitalization. a pruritic dermatitis near the left scapula developed. Multiple white dandruff-like ilakes were seen on the hair coat. especially over the dorsal spine and neck, and the dog expressed increased pruritus by frequently licking and scratching the affected areas. Local dense accumulations of skin debris that became crusty were also observed. Microscopic examination or a skin scraping revealed a heavy infestation of cheyletiella vnsfuri. as idrntified by the prrsrnce of holes of the palpi and the heart-shaped sensory organ on menu I. Immnosuppression elicited by the extensive administration of prednisolone was suspected for the initiation of the generalized mite infestation.
Concrete-filled square steel tube (CFT) columns have inherently high fire resistance and load-bearing capacity. Nevertheless, it is sometimes necessary to improve their fire resistance using external fire protection. This paper presents the experimental results of the temperature distribution of CFT columns with fire protection. A fire load test was carried out by exposing small-scale specimens to heat in an electric furnace that was especially built for testing loaded columns. The temperature distribution of CFT columns under constant axial loads was determined, as were its significant parameters, such as the types of fire protection and thickness, the thickness of the square CFT, and the fire duration times. The results of this study showed the temperature distribution of each specimen of the electric furnace and the temperature distribution properties of concrete and steel. In addition, the axial displacement and local buckling behavior of CFT columns based on temperature changes was observed.

Effects of fiber-matrix interphases on the micro-and macro-mechanical behaviors of unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composites subjected to transverse shear loading at remote distance have been studied. The interphases between fibers and matrix have been modeled by the spring-layer which accounts for continuity of tractions, but allows radial and circumferential displacement jumps across the interphase that are linearly related to the normal and tangential tractions. Numerical calculations for basic cells of the composites have been carried out using the boundary element method. For an undamaged composite the micro-level stresses at the matrix side of the interphase and effective shear stiffness have been computed as functions of fiber volume ratio $V_f$ and interphase stiffness k. Results are presented for various interphase stiffnesses from the perfect bonding to the case of total debonding. For a square array composite the results show that for a high interphase stiffness k>10, an increase of $V_f$ increases the effective transverse shear modulus G over bar of the composite. For a relatively low interphase stiffness k<1, it is shwon that an increase of $V_f$ slightly decreases the effective transverse shear modulus. For the perfect bonding case, G over bar for a hexagonal array composite is slightly larger than that for a square array composite. Also for a damaged composite partially debonded at the interphase, local stress fields and effective shear modulus are calculated and a decrease in G over bar has been observed.

The structural anisotropy and heterogeneity of rock mass, caused by discontinuities and weak zones, have a great influence on the deformation behavior of a tunnel. A tunnel construction in these complex ground conditions is very difficult. No matter how excellent a geological investigation is, local uncertainties of rock mass conditions still remain. Under these uncertain circumstances, an accurate forecast of the ground conditions ahead of the advancing tunnel face is indispensable to a safe and economic tunnel construction. This paper presents the effect of anisotropy and heterogeneity of the rock masses to be excavated by numerical analysis. The influences of distance from weak zone, the size or dimension, the different stiffness and the orientation of weak zones are analysed by 3-D finite element analysis. By analysing these numerical results, the tunnel behavior due to excavation can be well understood and the prediction of rock mass condition ahead of the tunnel face can be possible.
