The main objective of the present study is to elucidate a correlation between ship resistances from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and brake horse powers (BHP) from towing tank in container carriers. The tests were conducted for a range of combinations of trim conditions and speeds. To achieve this goal, 295 cases of numerical simulation have been performed using Star-CCM+ which had been statistically verified to predict ship resistances (Lee & Lee, 2014). Based on the normal distribution of resistance errors in all cases of the 4 container carriers, the confidence interval of numerical error was estimated as [-2.33%,+2.42%] with 95% confidence. The correlation coefficients between the ship resistances of CFD and the brake horse powers of the experiments were higher than 0.93. As a result, the numerical calculation of ship resistances is able to be utilized in order to provide a quick guidance in selection of the optimum loading condition.
Numerical analyses were performed to analyze the behavior of a suction pile under lateral loads with different soil layer conditions (uniform clay layer, uniform sand layer, and multi layers consisting of clay and sand layers) and different loading locations (top, middle, and bottom of the suction pile). The results of the analyses revealed that, regardless of the soil layer conditions, the lateral resistances at the loading location of the middle of the suction pile were the maximum. For the given loading locations, the lateral resistances of the suction pile for the uniform sand layer were relatively higher than those for the multi layer. By analyzing translations and rotations of the suction pile, it was identified that the amount of translation was highly dependent on both the soil layer condition and the lateral loading location while the rotated angle varied significantly with the lateral loading location, but not much with soil layer condition.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of reinforcing materials on the fracture resistances of glass fiber mesh- and Cr-Co metal mesh-reinforced maxillary complete dentures under fatigue loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Glass fiber mesh- and Cr-Co mesh-reinforced maxillary complete dentures were fabricated using silicone molds and acrylic resin. A control group was prepared with no reinforcement (n = 15 per group). After fatigue loading was applied using a chewing simulator, fracture resistance was measured by a universal testing machine. The fracture patterns were analyzed and the fractured surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS. After cyclic loading, none of the dentures showed cracks or fractures. During fracture resistance testing, all unreinforced dentures experienced complete fracture. The mesh-reinforced dentures primarily showed posterior framework fracture. Deformation of the all-metal framework caused the metal mesh-reinforced denture to exhibit the highest fracture resistance, followed by the glass fiber mesh-reinforced denture (P<.05) and the control group (P<.05). The glass fiber mesh-reinforced denture primarily maintained its original shape with unbroken fibers. River line pattern of the control group, dimples and interdendritic fractures of the metal mesh group, and radial fracture lines of the glass fiber group were observed on the fractured surfaces. CONCLUSION. The glass fiber mesh-reinforced denture exhibits a fracture resistance higher than that of the unreinforced denture, but lower than that of the metal mesh-reinforced denture because of the deformation of the metal mesh. The glass fiber mesh-reinforced denture maintains its shape even after fracture, indicating the possibility of easier repair.

This paper is aimed at investigating the effect of multiple longitudinal stiffeners on the patch loading resistance of slender steel plate girders. Firstly, a numerical study is conducted through geometrically and materially nonlinear analysis with imperfections included (GMNIA), the model is validated with experimental results taken from the literature. The structural responses of girders with multiple longitudinal stiffeners are compared to the one of girders with a single longitudinal stiffener. Thereafter, a patch loading resistance model is developed through machine learning (ML) using symbolic regression (SR). An extensive numerical dataset covering a wide range of bridge girder geometries is employed to fit the resistance model using SR. Finally, the performance of the SR prediction model is evaluated by comparison of the resistances predicted using available formulae from the literature.
Three prestressed concrete(PC) piles were installed for research purpose at Seosan area of west sea of Korea, and also cone penetration tests (CPT) were performed near two pile locations in order to compute PC pile shaft resistance by using CPT data measured. Three common CPT prediction methods that ia, Schmertmann method, Tumay Sl Fakroo method and LCPC method in France were used to predict pile shaft resistance. The pile shaft resistance predicted by each method was compared with that obtained by full-scale loading test and pile driving analyzer to estimate reliability of each prediction method. The predicted resistances based on three CPT-based methods underestimated significantly the resistances obtained from by fullrcale loading test, performed at 25 days and 42 days text pile installtion. There were, however, good agreements of predicted shaft resistance of piles between three CPT-based methods and pile driving analyzer tested two weeks after pile installtion.

In this study, the performance of group suction anchors installed in sand and subjected to pullout loading was investigated by numerical analysis. The group suction anchors consist of two or three units rigidly connected to each other in parallel array and the pullout resistances were compared with that of a single anchor. Parametric study was performed using numerical models to study the effect of the physical conditions of the group anchor. The parameters include the skirt length to diameter ratio of a unit suction anchor, the pad-eye location, inclination of loading and the spacing between unit suction anchors. The analysis shows that the ratios of the pullout capacity of double suction anchor and triple suction anchor to that of single anchor are 1.7 and 2.4, respectively. The ratio increases with the increase in the spacing between the unit anchors. The other parameters such as the skirt length to the diameter ratio, the location of the pad-eye and the loading inclination have negligible effect on the ratio of pullout resistances of the group anchor to the single anchor.

In this paper, a Four-wired antenna was designed and manufactured using Four-wires in order to perform EMI/EMC experiments. As compared with a TEM cell, the feature of the Four-wired antenna has simple installment with broadband balun, a Four-wired antenna, and loading resistances in an anechoic chamber. And the E-field polarization of antenna can be easily changed. Without the limitation of space, EMI/EMC experimental environment could be built within the anechoic chamber with the moderate cost. In S, C, and X-bands, the manufactured antenna was able to make an experiment on EMI/EMC with the DUT which has the quiet zone of the height, width, length equal to about 10 cm.
Success or failure of the bi-directional pile load test for drilled shaft depends on point selection for loading cells, that is balanced location both uplift force and downward force. Methods to evaluate the ultimate unit side resistance in rockmass layer in both domestic and foreign are based on the uniaxial compression strength of rock core, which can hardly be obtained in domestic rockmass layers which are weathered rockmass layer and soft rockmass layer with very low RQD. Therefore, this study suggested the relation charts between the revised SPT N values and developed unit side resistance of each different layers, which were obtained from bi-directional pile load tests in various domestic sites. To evaluate the appropriateness of the relation charts, the developed unit side resistances from the relation charts were used to select the loading cell position and compared with the measured unit side resistances from field pile load test. Results showed that the developed side resistance from relation charts and the measured side resistance of weathered soil layer and weathered rock layer were very close. Average developed side resistance($1,325kN/m^2$), which are average of upper soft rock layer of loading device($1,151kN/m^2$) and lower($1,500kN/m^2$), was similar with the estimated value ($1,250kN/m^2$).

In order to remove the organic substances and the nitrate-nitrogen contained in wastewater, some researchers have studied the simultaneous removal of organics and nitrogen by using different biocathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The operating conditions for removing the contaminants in the MFCs are the external resistances, HRTs, the concentration of the influent wastewater, and other factors. This study aimed to determine the effect of the external resistors and organic loading rates, from the changing HRT, on the removal of the organics and nitrogen and on the production of electric power using the Denitrification Biocathode - Microbial Fuel Cell (DNB-MFC). As regards the results of the study, the removal efficiencies of $SCOD_{Cr}$ did not show any difference, but the nitrate-nitrogen removal efficiencies were increased by decreasing the external resistance. The maximum denitrification rate achieved was $129.2{\pm}13.54g\;NO_3{^-}-N/m^3/d$ in the external resistance $1{\Omega}$, and the maximum power density was $3,279mW/m^3$ in $10{\Omega}$. When the DNB-MFC was operated with increasing influent organic and nitrate loading by reducing the HRTs, the $NO_3{^-}-N$ removal efficiencies were increased linearly, and the maximum nitrate removal rate was $1,586g\;NO^3{^-}-N/m^3/d$ at HRT 0.6 h.
Flush end-plate (FEP) beam-to-column joints are commonly used for gravity load resisting parts in steel multi-storey buildings. However, in seismic resisting structures FEP joints should also provide rotation capacity consistent with the global structural displacements. The current version of EN1993-1-8 recommends a criterion aiming at controlling the thickness of the end-plate in order to avoid brittle failure of the connection, which has been developed for monotonic loading conditions assuming elastic-perfectly plastic behaviour of the connection's components in line with the theory of the component method. Hence, contrary to the design philosophy of the hierarchy of resistances implemented in EN1998-1, the over strength and the hardening of the plastic components are not directly accounted for. In light of these considerations, this paper describes and discusses the results obtained from parametric finite element simulations aiming at investigating the moment-rotation response of FEP joints under cyclic actions. The influence of bolt diameter, thickness of end-plate, number of bolt rows and shape of beam profile on the joint response is discussed and design requirements are proposed to enhance the ductility of the joints.
