  • This study was carried out for development of effective preservation on animal genetic resources. Spermatogonia cells are the germline stem cells and they can be restored to adult animal with proliferation and differentiation intentionally. When the spermatogonia cells were purified from seminiferous tubules and were cultured at $32^{\circ}C$, the cells were actively proliferated. The culture medium consisted of TCM199 plus $10\%$ FCS and coculture with Sertoli cells supported cultivation of spermatogonia cells. By passing 40 days of incubation, spermatogonia cells formed the germline colony or shape of ES-like colony or reconstruction of pseudo-seminifcrous tubule shape. At 40 days, the cultured cells were no sign for differentiation to spermatocyte or spermatid. The experiment of induced differentiation of this cells is needed.

  • As livestock diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease are highly infectious and likely to inflict nationwide damage, it is important to detect such diseases in advance. Infection of foot-and-mouth disease is determined in the field through examination of external symptoms such as rise in body temperature. However, as the disease is carried around initially by travelling veterinarians in some cases, it is critical to measure the body temperature of livestock to detect abnormal temperature pattern early on and transmit temperature reading data remotely to a veterinarian remotely to expedite decision. In this study, we have developed a telemedicine system designed to connect veterinarians and livestock farmers and measure the body temperature of Korean beef cattle with IR sensor module linked to ubiquitous ICT platform as a solution for controlling health conditions of Korean beef cattle and improving the efficiency of livestock farming operations at individual farm, regional, and national level by converging ubiquitous ICT platform and livestock farming practices. Successfully employing the state-of-the-art IT technologies of Korea, the system proposed herein is expected to make Korea's livestock farming industry more sustainable and help the nation to secure technological preeminence in the global livestock products market.

  • The current study was conducted to investigate the optimum stunning voltage and chilling regime with emphasis on reduction in pale, soft and exudative (PSE) pork. The experiments were conducted at seven Korean major pig abattoirs using a total of 91,082 industrial population. Frequencies of PSE meat was found to be significantly (p<0.05) increased as stunning voltage was elevated from 220-240 (13.14%), 250-280 (29.32%) to 430 volts (36.74%). Chilling methods after slaughter, either with cold water showing or rapid chilling reduced PSE meat by 22% compared to a classic chiller-based slow chilling regime. The current study also revealed that chiller temperature during the first 90 minutes had a significant (p<0.001) effect on PSE incidences. Pigs chilled between -5 to $7^{\circ}C$ resulted in the lowest PSE meat (17.8%), followed by higher than $7^{\circ}C$ (21.3%) and lower than $-5^{\circ}C$ (37.5%). The current data implies that low voltage stunning method (eg., 220-240 volts), followed by rapid chilling regime, maintaining chiller temperature between approximately -5 to $7^{\circ}C$ could reduce PSE incidences.

  • Fast response to livestock disease and raising the reproductive success rate contribute to the improvement of farm productivity and profit margins. Due to the decrease in farm workforce and aging population, efficient livestock healthcare and breeding management are needed. In this study, we developed a mobile application for livestock healthcare and breeding management based on the collected body temperature data by IoT sensors. In case of livestock health problem, users are notified immediately via a mobile application warning message. It also provides users with a livestock breeding date function, allowing them to respond without missing the breeding season.

  • Ammonia is a very important constituent of the atmospheric environment because it is the most dominant gaseous alkaline species present in the atmosphere. Ammonia is known to affect ecosystems at relatively low concentration. Ammonia flux from livestock facilities can be regulated by a number of environmental factors (pH, ammonium ion, temperature, wind speed, etc). The increases in wind speed above manure from 0.0 m/s to 1.0 7m/s resulted in 2.5 times increases in ammonia flux. Wind speed and ammonia flux showed 0.982. A linear relationship with a correlation coefficient (r=0.982). When manure temperature increased from $3^{\circ}C$ to $36^{\circ}C$, the manure pH decreased approximately 0.30 to 0.46. As wind speed above the manure increased from 0.0 m/s to 1.07 m/s, ammonia flux increased approximately 2.5 times. The increasing manure temperature from $3^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$, raised ammonia flux from 2.0 to 3.6 times (2.6 times in average similarly). The increases of manure temperature from $3^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ increased ammonia flux from 5.7 to 12.9 times (8.5 times in average). In this study, the correlation coefficient between ammonia flux and manure temperature was found from 0.972 to 0.989. Results of our research showed that ammonium ion concentration, pH of manure and wind speed were important factors in controlling the ammonia flux from manure livestock facilities.

  • More a reddish color of KNBP was related to higher frequency of slower fiber type. Tender meat with a faster ageing rate for KNBP was coincided with a faster proteolytic rate, and likely a higher collagen solubility (data not shown). However, it is not confirmed whether the results were linked to the favorable pH/temperature window during rigor development, or fiber composition for tender meat.

  • This study was conducted to collect basic data about the effects of ventilation types on the interior environment of the enclosed farrowing-nursery pig house in Anseong, Icheon and Jeungpyong. Surveyed ventilation types in the enclosed farrowing-nursery pig house are classified in to 4 types. In V1 type, air enters through a planar slot inlet placed on the juncture of the entering wall and exit through the chimney fan outlet; in V2 type, air enters through a perforated ceiling inlet and exits chimney fan outlet(V2); in V3 type, air enters through a circular duct inlet and exit chimney fan outlet(V3); in V4 type, enters through a circular duct inlet and exits side wall exhaust fan outlet(V4). Temperature, relative humidity, air velocity and ammonia concentration($NH_3$) were measured in the interior of swine building in the summer. Interior temperature was not remarkably different in all ventilation types in this study. However, temperature of the V4 was somewhat lower than that of the other types. Air velocity of the V4 was higher and $NH_3$ concentration of the V4 was lower than those of other ventilation types. It is suggested that the V4 ventilation type be applicable in the enclosed farrowing-nursery pig house in Korea.

  • The body temperature of livestock is directly related to the health of livestock such that it changes immediately when there exists health problem. Accordingly, the monitoring of livestock's temperature is one of most important tasks in farm management. However, the temperature of livestock is usually measured using skin-attached sensor which is significantly affected by the outside temperature and the condition of attachment which results in the inaccurate measurement of temperature. Herein we have proposed new scheme which estimates the body core temperature of cow based on measured data from neck-attached smart sensor. Especially, we have considered both schemes which estimate the exact temperature and which detect the unusually high temperature based on machine learning. We have found that the occurrence of high temperature can be detected accurately. The proposed scheme can be used in monitoring of health condition of cow and improving the efficiency of farm management.

  • This study was conducted to utilize the wastes produced from thinning the forest as a roughage source for ruminants. Four ruminally cannulated Korean steers were used to investigate the ruminal fermentation characteristics and blood concentrations of stress-related hormones. Treatments were composed of the rice straw only (Control) and the 30% pine silage plus 70% rice straw(Pine silage) as roughages. The experiment was conducted with four replicates by a double tum over design. For sampling of blood under high temperature steers were accommodated in respiratory chamber. Concentrations of ruminal pH, volatile fatty acids and ammonia were not affected by substitution of pine silage. Mean concentration of blood thyroxine was significantly(P < 0.01) lower in the pine silage than the control. However, blood cortisol concentration was not affected by substitution of pine silage, even though it was significantly(P < 0.05) decreased after exposure for 6 hrs in high temperature. It was concluded that the pine silage using the wastes produced from thinning the forest could be use as a substitute roughage for reduction of heat stress in ruminant.
