Electrochemical Characteristics of Carbon-coated LiFePO4 as a Cathode Material for Lithium Ion Secondary Batteries

  • The electrochemical properties of $LiFePO_4$ as a cathode for Li-ion batteries were improved by incorporating conductive carbon into the $LiFePO_4$. X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM observations revealed that the carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$ consisted of fine single crystalline particles, which were smaller than the bare $LiFePO_4$. The electrochemical performance of the carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$ was tested under various conditions. The carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$ showed much better performance in terms of the discharge capacity and cycling stability than the bare $LiFePO_4$. The improved electrochemical performances were found to be attributed to the reduced particle size and enhanced electrical conductivity of the $LiFePO_4$ by the carbon.

  • In order to drive a hybrid propulsion device which combines an engine and an electric propulsion unit, battery packs that contain dozens of unit cells consisting of a lithium-based battery are used to maintain the power source. Therefore, it is necessary to more strictly manage a number of battery cells at any given time. In order to manage battery cells, generally voltage, current, and temperature data under load condition are monitored from a personal computer. Other important elements required to analyze the condition of the battery are the internal resistances that are used to judge its state-of-health (SOH) and the open-circuit voltage (OCV) that is used to check the battery charging state. However, in principle, the internal resistances cannot be measured during operation because the parallel equivalent circuit is composed of internal loss resistances and capacitance. In most energy storage systems, battery management system (BMS) operations are carried out by using data such as voltage, current, and temperature. However, during operation, in the case of unexpected battery cell failure, the output voltage of the power supply can be changed and propulsion of the hybrid vehicle and vessel can be difficult. This paper covers the implementation of a high safety battery management system (HSBMS) that can estimate the OCV while the device is being driven. If a battery cell fails unexpectedly, a DC power supply with lithium iron phosphate can keep providing the load with a constant output voltage using the remainder of the batteries, and it is also possible to estimate the internal resistance.

Li Ion Diffusivity and Improved Electrochemical Performances of the Carbon Coated LiFePO4

  • This study examines the effects of a carbon coating on the electrochemical performances of $LiFePO_4$. The results show that the capacity of bare $LiFePO_4$ decreased sharply, whereas the $LiFePO_4$/C shows a well maintained initial capacity. The Li ion diffusivity of the bare and carbon coated $LiFePO_4$ is calculated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) to determine the correlation between the electrochemical performance of $LiFePO_4$ and Li diffusion. The diffusion constants for $LiFePO_4$ and $LiFePO_4$/C measured from CV are $6.56{\times}10^{-16}$ and $2.48{\times}10^{-15}\;cm^2\;s^{-1}$, respectively, indicating considerable increases in diffusivity after modifications. The Li ion diffusivity (DLi) values as a function of the lithium content in the cathode are estimated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The effects of the carbon coating as well as the mechanisms for the improved electrochemical performances after modification are discussed based on the diffusivity data.

Application of Regularized Linear Regression Models Using Public Domain data for Cycle Life Prediction of Commercial Lithium-Ion Batteries (상업용 리튬 배터리의 수명 예측을 위한 고속대량충방전 데이터 정규화 선형회귀모델의 적용)

  • In this study a rarely available high-throughput cycling data set of 124 commercial lithium iron phosphate/graphite cells cycled under fast-charging conditions, with widely varying cycle lives ranging from 150 to 2,300 cycles including in-cycle temperature and per-cycle IR measurements. We worked out own Python codes which reproduced the various data plots and machine learning approaches for cycle life prediction using early cycles and more details not presented in the article and the supplementary information. Particularly, we applied regularized ridge, lasso and elastic net linear regression models using features extracted from capacity fade curves, discharge voltage curves, and other data such as internal resistance and cell can temperature. We found that due to the limitation in the quantity and quality of the data from costly and lengthy battery testing a careful hyperparameter tuning may be required and that model features need to be extracted based on the domain knowledge.

Li Ion Diffusivity and Rate Performance of the LiFePO4 Modified by Cr Doping

  • This study reports the root cause of the improved rate performance of $LiFePO_4$ after Cr doping. By measuring the chemical diffusion coefficient of lithium ($D_{Li}$) using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the correlation between the electrochemical performance of $LiFePO_4$ and Li diffusion is acquired. The diffusion constants for $LiFePO_4$/C and $LiFe_{0.97}Cr_{0.03}PO_4$/C measured from CV are $2.48{\times}10^{-15}$ and $4.02{\times}10^{-15}cm^2s^{-1}$, respectively, indicating significant increases in diffusivity after the modification. The difference in diffusivity is also confirmed by EIS and the $D_{Li}$ values obtained as a function of the lithium content in the cathode. These results suggest that Cr doping facilitates Li ion diffusion during the charge-discharge cycles. The low diffusivity of the $LiFePO_4$/C leads to the considerable capacity decline at high discharge rates, while high diffusivity of the $LiFe_{0.97}Cr_{0.03}PO_4$/C maintains the initial capacity, even at high C-rates.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of LiFePO4 by Citrate Process (구연산염법을 이용한 LiFePO4 합성 및 전기화학특성에 관한 연구)

  • $LiFePO_4$ is a promising cathode material for secondary lithium batteries due to its high energy density, low cost and safety. $LiFePO_4$ was synthesized by the citrate process under reductive, neutral, and oxidative, atmospheres and the crystal structure was analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction. The samples synthesized under $N_2$ and $H_2$ atmosphere showed a single phase of a olivine structure, where the samples synthesized under $O_2$ atmosphere exhibited second phase of $Fe2O_3$. All the samples synthesized at 400, 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ atmosphere presented a single phase of olivine. Residual organic material was observed for the sample synthesized at $400^{\circ}C$. There was nearly no intensity difference between the samples synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. The electrochemical characteristic of the $LiFePO_4$ synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ in the $N_2$ atmosphere was analyzed. The result exhibited an high discharge capacity of 160 mAh/g at the first cycle, and 155-160 mAh/g after 45 cycles.

Dual EKF-Based State and Parameter Estimator for a LiFePO4 Battery Cell

  • This work presents the design of a dual extended Kalman filter (EKF) as a state/parameter estimator suitable for adaptive state-of-charge (SoC) estimation of an automotive lithium-iron-phosphate ($LiFePO_4$) cell. The design of both estimators is based on an experimentally identified, lumped-parameter equivalent battery electrical circuit model. In the proposed estimation scheme, the parameter estimator has been used to adapt the SoC EKF-based estimator, which may be sensitive to nonlinear map errors of battery parameters. A suitable weighting scheme has also been proposed to achieve a smooth transition between the parameter estimator-based adaptation and internal model within the SoC estimator. The effectiveness of the proposed SoC and parameter estimators, as well as the combined dual estimator, has been verified through computer simulations on the developed battery model subject to New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) related operating regimes.

The Origin of the Residual Carbon in LiFePO4 Synthesized by Wet Milling

  • This study reports the origin of the electrochemical improvement of $LiFePO_4$ when synthesized by wet milling using acetone without conventional carbon coating. The wet milled $LiFePO_4$ delivers 149 $mAhg^{-1}$ at 0.1 C, which is comparable to carbon coated $LiFePO_4$ and approximately 74% higher than that of dry milled $LiFePO_4$, suggesting that the wet milling process can increase the capacity in addition to conventional carbon coating methods. UV spectroscopy, elemental microanalysis, and evolved gas analysis are used to find the root cause of the capacity improvement during the mechanochemical reaction in acetone. The analytical results show that the improvement is attributed to the conductive residual carbon on the surface of the wet milled $LiFePO_4$ particles, which is produced by the reaction of $FeC_2O_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ with acetone during wet milling through oxygen deficiency in the precursor.

An investigation into energy harvesting and storage to power a more electric regional aircraft

  • This is an investigation for a more electric regional aircraft, considering the ATR 72 aircraft as an example and the electrification of its four double slotted flaps, which were estimated to require an energy of 540 Wh for takeoff and 1780 Wh for landing, with a maximum power requirement of 35.6 kW during landing. An analysis and evaluation of three energy harvesting systems has been carried out, which led to the recommendation of a combination of a piezoelectric and a thermoelectric harvesting system providing 65% and 17%, respectively, of the required energy for the actuators of the four flaps. The remaining energy may be provided by a solar energy harvesting photovoltaic system, which was calculated to have a maximum capacity of 12.8 kWh at maximum solar irradiance. It was estimated that a supercapacitor of 232 kg could provide the energy storage and power required for the four flaps, which proved to be 59% of the required weight of a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery while the supercapacitor also constitutes a safer option.

Synthesis and Rietveld Refinement of the Cathode Material $LiFePO_4/C$ for Rechargeable Lithium Batteries (리튬 2차전지용 양극소재 $LiFePO_4/C$의 합성 및 리트벨트 구조분석)

  • Carbon-coated lithium iron phosphate ($LiFePO_4/C$) composites are synthesized by the modified mechanical activation method (modified MA process) and studied by the Rietveld structural refinement. Rietveld indices of $LiFePO_4/C$ indicate good fitting with $R_p=8.14%,\;R_{wp}=11.1%,\;R_{exp}=9.09%,\;R_B=3.88%$, and S (GofF, Goodness of fit) = 1.2, respectively. $LiFePO_4/C$ with a space group Pnma shows a = 10.3229(3)${\AA}$, b = 6.0052(2) ${\AA}$, c = 4.6939(1) ${\AA}$, and V = 290.98(1) ${\AA}^3$ in dimension, indicating good agreements with those of previous works. Synthetic powders are nano-sized ($65{\sim}90nm$) homogeneous particles with high purity. Thus the modified MA method will be an efficient process to get a high quality cathode material for commercial lithium batteries.
