Numerical simulation is performed for microdroplet deposition on a pre-patterned micro-structure. The liquid-air interface is tracked by a level-set method, which is improved by incorporating a sharp-interface modeling technique for accurately enforcing the matching conditions at the liquid-gas interface and the no-slip condition at the fluid-solid interface. The method is further extended to treat the contact angle condition at an immersed solid surface. The present computation of a patterning process using microdroplet ejection demonstrates that the multiphase characteristics between the liquid-gas-solid phases can be used to improve the patterning accuracy.
A cutting fluid can improve machining quality and tool life by maintaining the tool toughness and by providing a lubrication effect to reduce the friction between the chip and tool interface. Although liquid nitrogen as an environmentally safe coolant has been widely recognized in cryogenic machining, its function as a lubricant is plausible due to its chemical inertness, physical volatility and low viscosity. Since a reduced friction is a direct witness of the lubrication effect from a tribological viewpoint, this paper presents an evaluation of the apparent friction coefficient on the tool-chip interface in cryogenic cutting operations to prove and characterize the lubricity of LN2 in cryogenic machining. The mathematical approaches have been formulated to derive the normal and frictional forces on the tool-chip interface for the oblique cutting tests.
A micro zoom system without moving elements by use of two liquid lenses is designed and optimized in this paper. The zoom equations of the system composed of two liquid lenses are deduced. The structure parameters including radius and thickness of a conical double-liquid electrowetting based lens are analyzed and calculated. Because the liquid thickness varies non-linearly with the radius of the interface, it's very difficult to optimize a real liquid lens using commercial optical design software directly. Through the Application Programming Interface (API) of the optical design software CODE V, a zoom system with two real electrowetting based liquid lenses is modeled and optimized. A two-liquid-lens zoom system without moving elements, with a zoom factor of 1.8 and a compact structure of 10 mm is designed for illustration. This can be useful for the camera design of mobile phones, tablets and so on. And this paper presents a convenient way of designing and optimizing a zoom system including liquid lenses by commercial optical design software.

In this study, the novel concept catalytic reactor was designed for water-gas shift reaction (WGS) under high pressure. The novel concept catalytic reactor was composed of an autoclave, the catalyst, and liquid water. Cu-ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ as the low temperature shift catalyst was used for WGS reaction. WGS in the novel concept catalytic reactor was carried out at the ranges of 150~$250^{\circ}C$ and 30~50 atm. The liquid water was filled at the bottom of the autoclave catalytic reactor and the catalyst of pellet type was located at the gas-liquid water interface. It was concluded that WGS reaction occurred over the surface of catalysts partially wetted with liquid water. The conversion of CO for WGS was also controlled with changing content of Cu and ZnO used as the catalytic active components. Meanwhile, the catalyst of honey comb type coated with Cu-ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ was used in order to increase the contact area between wet-surface of catalyst and the reactants of gas phase. It was confirmed from these experiments that $H_2$/CO ratio of the simulated coal gas increased from 0.5 to 0.8 by WGS at gas-liquid water interface over the wet surface of honey comb type catalyst at $250^{\circ}C$ and 50 atm.
Catalytic slurry reactors, in which a solid maintained in the rom of fine particles suspended in a liquid, are frequently used in chemical and biochemical and industries. In these processes the particle loading is normally low so that the effects of particles on the liquid-film mass transfer coefacent and the gas-liquid interface area are assumed to be negligible. But it is known from the works, amongst others, that the finely powdered activated carbon can increase the gas-liquid mass transfer significantly in surface-aerated reactors. The stirred cell (13.2cm inside diameter) contained four baffles and at the stirring speeds range of 80 ∼ 300ppm, the gas-liquid interfacial area could be considered as that of the cross section of the vessel (that is, 130.1cm2). When the stirrer speeds were increased, the effective interfacial area was slightly higher than the geometric area and was obtained experimentally from the Danckwerts plots. Key Words : gas-liquid interfacial area, Duckwert's Plot stirred dell. mass transfer coefficient.
Based on liquid-lens technology and our previous findings on the optical model of the Chinese eye, the liquid lens is applied in the research of the crystalline-lens optical model. Theoretical models of three-layer liquid lenses are built with COMSOL software, and the effect of voltage on the shape of the interface between two liquids is analyzed. By polynomial fitting, different equations describing the interface shape are set up under different voltages. Finally, the optical system of the human eye with a three-layer liquid lens is built and analyzed with Zemax optical design software, and moreover the optical system models of emmetropia, myopia, and hyperopia are presented. This method to build a model of the human eye with a variable-focus liquid lens can provide a novel idea for more practical human-eye models for clinical regulation and control in the future.
A theoretical method is developed to analyze the free vibration of an elastic annular plate in contact with an ideal liquid. The displacement potential functions of the contained liquid are expressed as a combination of the Bessel functions that satisfy the Laplace equation and the liquid boundary conditions. The compatibility condition along the interface between the annular plate and the contained liquid is taken into account to consider the fluid-structure coupling. The dynamic displacement of the wet annular plate is assumed to be a combination of dry eigenfunctions, allowing for prediction of the natural frequencies using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The study investigates the effect of radial liquid boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of the wet annular plate, considering four types of liquid bounding: outer container bounded, outer and inner bounded, inner bounded, and radially unbounded. The proposed theoretical method is validated by comparing the predicted wet natural frequencies with those obtained from finite element analysis, showing excellent accuracy. The results indicate that the radial liquid bounding effect on the natural frequencies is negligible for the axisymmetric vibrational mode, but relatively significant for the mode with one nodal diameter (n =1) and no nodal circle (m' = 0). Furthermore, the study reveals that the wet natural frequencies are the largest for the plate with an inner bounded cylinder among the radial liquid boundary cases, regardless of the vibration mode.
The gas-liquid counter-current flow limitation (CCFL) is closely related to efficient and safety operation of many equipment in industrial cycle. Air-water countercurrent flow experiments were performed in a tube with diameter of 25 mm to understand the triggering mechanism of CCFL. A parallel electrode probe was utilized to measure film thickness whereby the time domain and frequency domain characteristics of liquid film was obtained. The amplitude of the interface wave is small at low liquid flow rate while it becomes large at high liquid flow rate after being disturbed by the airflow. The spectral characteristic curve shows a peak-shaped distribution. The crest exists between 0 and 10 Hz and the amplitude decreases with the frequency increase. The analysis of visual observation and characteristic of film thickness indicate that two flooding mechanisms were identified at low and high liquid flow rate, respectively. At low liquid flow rate, the interfacial waves upward propagation is responsible for the formation of CCFL onset. While flooding at high liquid flow rate takes place as a direct consequence of the liquid bridging in tube due to the turbulent flow pattern. Moreover, it is believed that there is a transition region between the low and high liquid flow rate.
The motion of a rising liquid droplet is different that of a bubble motion. Treatment of liquid drops is more complex because internal motion must be considered. A 3D unstructured CFD code has been developed to solve incompressible N-S equation for the droplet simulation. This front-tracking consideration which the interface is tracked explicitly is very available to apply for not only exact interface topology but also the high schmidt number issue, such as $CO_2$ dissolution. This paper is forced on the zig-zag motion of the liquid droplet. The simulation shows that if the rising droplet is located at the corner of the zig-zag path, the velocity is low and shape of the droplet is more spherical shape, results in the less drag coefficient. Twin horse shoe vortexes behind the rising droplet are presented and the topology of the droplet is compared with an experimental result during one period of the path.
[ $BaTiO_3$ ] thick film by an interfacial polymerization method was prepared at the liquid/liquid interface between benzyl alcohol saturated solution with the basic catalyst [diethyl amine ($NHEt_2$) or triethylamine ($NEt_3$)], and the water dissolved with $TiO_2$ and $Ba(CH_3COO)_2$. The film thickness increased gradually with an increase in diethyl amine($NHEt_2$) or triethylamine($NEt_3$) volume and the reaction time. The homogeneity of $BaTiO_3$ thick film after sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ was confirmed by EPMA analysis, which showed that both of Ba and Ti element were homogeneously distributed on the surface as well as in the perpendicular direction of the film. The thickness of $BaTiO_3$ film obtained by this process was $8.75\;{\mu}m$.
