  • As the size of mechanical components decreases, capillary forces and surface tension become increasingly significant. A major problem in maintaining high reliability of these small components is that of large frictional forces due to capillary action and surface tension. Unlike the situation with macro-scale systems, liquid lubrication cannot be used to reduce friction of micro-scale components because of the excessive capillary and drag forces. In this work, the feasibility of using evaporation to coat a thin film of organic lubricant on a solid surface was investigated with the aim of reducing friction. Petroleum and silicone oils were used as lubricants to coat a silicon substrate. It was found that friction could be significantly reduced and, furthermore, that the effectiveness of this method was strongly dependent on the coating conditions.

  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas is divided into liquefied gases containing propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10). The quality of LPG varies greatly depending on the composition of the mixture, so it is important to measure the composition accurately. It is difficult to determine the composition of the mixture because liquid and gas coexist at room temperature. Therefore, the uncertainty in determining the concentration of hydrocarbons by component is high, and there are many problems that differ from the actual content standard. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a mixed liquid propane standard gas for the composition and accurate concentration of hydrocarbon substances. Mixed liquid propane standard gas is manufactured into bellows-type constant-pressure cylinders by ISO-6142 (2015). The homogeneity of the four standard gases manufactured was confirmed to be GC-FID. The manufacturer's uncertainty of expansion was 0.01 % to 0.30 % and homogeneity was 0.03 % to 0.25 %. In this mixed liquid propane standard gas, the relative expansion uncertainty of weight method, manufacturing consistency, cylinder adsorption and long-term stability was developed within 0.26 %-1.3 9% (95% of confidence level, k=2).

  • Metal ions exist in seawater, groundwater and industrial wastewaters. These source waters can be recycled if their concentrations are reduced. A number of processes can be applied for this purpose. Liquid-liquid extraction is one of the promising methods. In this paper, experimental results are presented on the removal of Cr(VI) using Aliquat-336, a reactive carrier, in sunflower oil (a non-toxic solvent). The performance of this new system is compared with those of kerosene (a toxic solvent). The extent of removal of Cr(VI) from samples with high and low concentrations are presented. The process was upgraded to a bench-scale module that can selectively remove about 50-90% Cr(VI) from samples of groundwater. Thus this process can produce water within the acceptable range for recycling and for use in secondary purposes such as irrigation.

  • A good atomization in uniform size brings the elevation of thermal efficiency in spray combustion, the beautiful painting on surfaces, and the economical sprinkling of chemicals. Ultrasonic atomization has been expected as a good uniform atomization mechanism due to its uniform size distribution. Influx, load, and physical properties of liquids are the effecting factors to atomize liquids. In this study, distilled water and city water are selected as reference liquids and gasoline, kerosene, and petroleum as fuel liquids. Characteristics and affinity to get the maximum effect for the ultrasonic atomization are observed by using the two ultrasonic transducers with 28kHz and 2MHz. Results show that the size distributions of liquid spray dorplet by the direct vibration method prevail over those by the aerosol method in uniform droplet size and as a whole, sizes of spray liquid droplets are increased slightly according to increasing influx in the direct vibration method and quantities of spray droplets in the aerosol method decreasing according to increasing liquid load h.

  • There are several types of petroleum products used for the fuel oil, according to their respective quality standards, grades and usage. Depending on the degree of oil tax rate by country, even the same petroleum products will have price gap. The illegal mixing of cheap petroleum products, which are subject to the lower tax rate, with relatively expensive transportation fuel causes problems such as tax evasion, environmental pollution and vehicle breakdown. In order to prevent illicit production and mixing of these different petroleum products, a small amount of markers are legally added to specific petroleum products. In Korea, markers are introduced and used to prevent illegal activity that kerosene used as fuel for house and commercial boiler are mixed with automotive diesel fuels, and marker contents are analyzed to use UV-Vis spectrophotometer and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In this study, we have developed a method to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the marker added to petroleum products by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) without adding developing reagent or sample pre-treatments.

  • Pyrolysis of polypropylene(PP) Was performed to find the effects of the pyrolysis temperature(425, 450, 475 and $500^{\circ}C$) and the pyrolysis time(35, 50 and 65minutes), respectively. Conversion and liquid yield obtained during PP pyrolysis continuously increased with the pyrolysis temperature( up to $500^{\circ}C$) and the pyrolysis time(up to 65minutes), especially these were more sensitive to the pyrolysis time at $425^{\circ}C$ than other pyrolysis temperatures. Each liquid product formed during the pyrolysis was classified into gasoline, kerosene, light oil and wax according to the distillation temperature based on the petroleum product quality standard of Korea Petroleum Quality Inspection Institute. The liquid products of PP pyrolysis up to $450^{\circ}C$ were almost same fractions($26{\pm}3$wt.% gasoline, $20{\pm}2$wt.% kerosene and $23{\pm}2$wt.% light oil) except wax($3{\sim}13$wt.%). On the other hand, the pyrolysis of PP from $475^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$ produced $26{\pm}3$wt.% wax, $24{\pm}1$wt.% gasoline, $18{\pm}1$wt.% kerosene and $16{\pm}1$wt.% light oil. After all, the main liquid product changed from gasoline to wax with increasing pyrolysis temperature.

  • To recycle collected high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) wastes as liquid fuel, depolymerization characteristics of HIPS by pyrolysis was studied. The effects of temperature and time on the pyrolysis of HIPS were investigated. The depolymerization temperature and activation energy of HIPS pyrolysis increased with increasing heating rate. In general, conversion and liquid yield gradually increased with pyrolysis temperature and pyrolysis time. Each liquid product formed during pyrolysis was classified into gasoline, kerosene, light oil and heavy oil according to the distillation temperature based on the petroleum product quality standard of Korea Petroleum Quality Inspection Institute. As a result, the amount of liquid products produced during HIPS pyrolysis was in the order of gasoline》heavy oil〉kerosene〉light oil. Especially 51${\pm}$6 wt% of HIPS treated was obtained as gasoline.

  • In the present study, in attempt was made to observe the effect of lipid components in pantocrin and antler velvet and sponge layers extracts on the aldolase activity in the rat spinal nerves. The antler chloroform-methanol (2:1) extracts are known to be composed of neutral lipids, cholesterol, cerebrosides, spingomyelin, phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl serine and gangliosides. The antler extracts were studied on the aldolase activity in the rat spinal nerves. The aldolase activity was measured by the method of Lehninger. To investigate the components of tile extracts which affect the enzyme activity, the chloroform-methanol (2:1) extracts of antler were fractionated into petroleum ether soluble and insoluble fractions and their effects on the enzyme activity were compared. It was found that the chloroform-methanol (2:1) extracts of the antler sponge and velvet layers as well as those petroleum ether soluble fractions obtained from the chloroform-methanol (2:1) extracts, decrease the aldolase activity by 18-23%. However, pantocrin showed increasing effect on the aldolase activity by 42.6%. The petroleum ether insoluble fraction of the chloroform-methanol (2:1) -extract showed no significant increasing activity (about 13%) on the spinal nerves aldolase. The components of pantocrin ind the petroleum ether insoluble fractions were attempted to analysize by thin layer (silica gel) and gas liquid chromatography.
