Secondary walls have recently drawn research interest as a primary source of sugars for liquid biofuel production. Secondary walls are composed of a complex mixture of the structural polymers cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. A matrix of hemicellulose and lignin surrounds the cellulose component of the plant's cell wall in order to protect the cell from enzymatic attacks. Such resistance, along with the variability seen in the proportions of the major components of the mixture, presents process design and operating challenges to the bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuel. Expanding bioenergy production to the commercial scale will require a significant improvement in the growth of feedstock as well as in its quality. Plant biotechnology offers an efficient means to create "targeted" changes in the chemical and physical properties of the resulting biomass through pathway-specific manipulation of metabolisms. The successful use of the genetic engineering approach largely depends on the development of two enabling tools: (1) the discovery of regulatory genes involved in key pathways that determine the quantity and quality of the biomass, and (2) utility promoters that can drive the expression of the introduced genes in a highly controlled manner spatially and/or temporally. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the transcriptional regulatory network that controls secondary wall biosynthesis and discuss experimental approaches to developing-xylem-specific utility promoters.
A Computational Fluid Dynamics model is presented in this study for the simulation of the complex fluid flows with free surfaces inside the Tuned Liquid Column Dampers in horizontal motion. The characteristics of the fluid model of the TLCD in horizontal motion include the free surface of the multiphase flow and the horizontal moving frame. In this study, the time depend unsteady Standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model based on Navier-Stokes equations is chosen. The volume of fluid (VOF) method and sliding mesh technique are adopted to track the free surface of water inside the vertical columns of TLCD and treat the moving boundary of the walls of TLCD in horizontal motion. Several model solution parameters comprising different time steps, mesh sizes, convergence criteria and discretization schemes are examined to establish model parametric independency results. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data in the dimensionless amplitude of the water column in four different configured groups of TLCDs with four different orifice areas. The predicted natural frequencies and the head loss coefficient of TLCDs from CFD model are also compared with the experimental data. The predicted numerical results agree well with the available experimental data.
This paper presents the numerical results of fluid flow and mixing in a microfluidic device for electro-osmotic flow (EOF) with an trapezoidal electrode array on the bottom wall (ETZEA). Differently from previous EOF in a channel which only transports fluid in colloidal system. ETZEA can also be utilized to mix a target liquid with a reagent. In this study we propose a method of controlling fluid flow and mixing enhancement. To obtain the flow and mixing characteristics, numerical computations are performed by using a commercial code, CFX-10, and a self-made code LBM-D. It was found that the flow near the trapezoidal electrode in the ETZEA is of 3-D complex flows due to the zeta potential difference between the trapezoidal electrode and channel walls, and as a consequence the hetrogeneous zeta potential on the electrodes plays an important role in mixing the liquid.

The present study is concerned with the heat transfer enhancement associated with a symmetrical or asymmetrical horseshoe vortex in front of and around the circular cylinder centered between the side walls of a wind tunnel. The static pressure measurements and the flow visualization in front of and around cylinders have been performed to determine the existence of horseshoe vortex. The hue-capturing method using the thermochromatic liquid crystals with great spatial resolution was used to obtain the local information of the endwall heat transfer coefficients. In case of one cylinder, the convective heat transfer coefficients of the region where the horseshoe vortex exists are larger than those of any other region. In case of two cylinders with tandem arrangement, the heat transfer rate of gap spacing (d/D= 1.5) is higher than that of gap spacings (d/D=2.0 or 2.5).

The washing effects on pretilt angle generation in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC), 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface with trifluoromethyl moiety have been successfully studied. The pretilt angle of 5CB is increased by the washing process on the rubbed PI surface. The surface tension on the rubbed PI surface increases with the rubbing strength RS and then saturated above RS: 150 mm. The pretilt angle of 5CB for all washing processes on the rubbed PI surface decreases with the surface tension. We have found that the pretilt angle of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface may be attributed van der walls (VDW) dispersion interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces having trifluoromethyl moieties.

In liquid oxygen/kerosene liquid rocket engines, kerosene is not only a propellant but also plays a role as a coolant to protect the combustion chamber wall from 3,000 K or more combustion gas. Since kerosene is exposed to high temperature passing through cooling channels, it may undergo heat-related chemical reactions leading to precipitation of carbon-rich solids. Such kerosene's thermal and fluidic characteristic test data are essential for the regeneratively cooled combustion chamber design. In this paper, we investigated foreign studies related to regenerative cooling channel and kerosene. Starting with general information on hydrocarbon fuels including kerosene, we attempted to systematically organize sedimentary phenomena on cooling channel walls, their causes/research results, coking test equipments/prevention methods, etc.

Nowadays, the artificial ground freezing (AGF) method has been used in many geotechnical engineering applications such as temporary excavation support, underpinning, and groundwater cutoff. The AGF method conducts the freezing process by employing a refrigerant circulating through a set of embedded freezing pipes to form frozen walls serving as an excavation support and cutoff wall. Two refrigerants of brine with the freezing temperature of $-20{\sim}-40^{\circ}C$ and liquid nitrogen with the freezing (evaporating) temperature of $-196^{\circ}C$ are commonly being used in geotechnical applications. This paper performed a series of field experiments to evaluate the freezing rate of marine clay in application of the AGF method. The field experiments consisted of the single freezing-pipe test and the frozen-wall formation test by circulating liquid nitrogen, which is a cryogenic refrigerant, into freezing pipes constructed at a depth of 3.2 m in the ground. The temperature of discharged liquid nitrogen was maintained through the automatic valve, and the temperature change induced by AGF method was measured at the freezing pipes and in the ground with time. According to the experimental results, the single freezing-pipe test consumed about 11.9 tons of liquid nitrogen for 3.5 days to form a cylindrical frozen body with the volume of about $2.12m^3$. In addition, the frozen-wall formation test used about 18 tons of liquid nitrogen for 4.1 days to form a frozen wall with the volume of about $7.04m^3$. The radial freezing rate decreased with increasing the radius of frozen body because the frozen area at a certain depth is proportional to the square of the radius. The radial freezing rate was formulated as a simple equation.

Transpiration cooling is the most effective cooling technique for the high-performance liquid rockets and air-breathing engines operating in aggressive environments with higher pressures and temperatures. When applying transpiration cooling, combustor liners and turbine blades/vanes are cooled by the coolant(air or fuel) passing through their porous walls and also the exit coolant acting as an insulating film. Practical implementation of the cooling technique has been hampered by the limitations of available porous materials. But advances in metal-joining techniques have led to the development of multi-laminate porous structures such as Lamilloy$^{(R)}$ fabricated from several diffusion-bonded, etched metal thin sheets. And also with the availability of lightweight, ceramic matrix composites(CMC), transpiration cooling now seems to be a promising technique for high-performance engine cooling. This paper reviews recent research activities of transpiration cooling and its applications to gas turbines, liquid rockets, and the engines for hypersonic vehicles.

Leak detection, the system is controlled by humanity's precious water resources, prepare for natural disasters and prevent damage to buildings and various industrial facilities. Especially because it causes serious environmental pollution, chemicals or oil spills, leak detection of various liquid(oil, water), the point at which the liquid leak is detected early on, and minimize environmental pollution, prevent damage of the equipment due to the leak, and the country's precious water resources to be used safely. In this paper, we solve these problems by using specialized film sensor, any person who is not a skilled technician, equipment or walls anywhere can be easily installed. also reduce unnecessary circuit, If film sensor is connected to operate, have a big competitive price, the detection of liquid and the surrounding environment according to, the sensor film that can set the sensitivity control, and monitoring system was implemented.

In order to effectively reduce thermal loads on regenerative cooled walls, fuel cooling injectors and film cooling devices have often been employed. The present study has established a numerical methodology for prediction of performance and near-wall temperature distribution taking into account the nonuniform mixing due to these additional cooling devices. A correction procedure for main propulsive parameters has also been proposed based on comparison between prediction and experimental data. Under the computational framework of this study, the predicted results were in good agreement with hot-firing test data for a 30 tonf-class full-scale combustor at the design and off-design conditions. As a consequence, the present numerical method is expected to be useful for design and evaluation of regenerative cooled liquid rocket thrust chambers.
