Pyroprocessing has been developed for the purpose of resolving the current spent nuclear fuel management issue and enhancing the recycle of valuable resources. An electrolytic reduction of the pyroprocessing is a process to reduce oxides into metals using LiCl as an electrolyte and requires a post-treatment process due to the inclusion of residual salt in porous metal products. A vacuum distillation has been adopted for various molten salt systems and could be applied to the post-treatment process of the electrolytic reduction. The residual salt in the metal products includes LiCl, alkali chlorides, and alkaline earth chlorides. In this paper, vapor pressures of chlorides have been estimated and the composition changes on the residual liquid during the vacuum distillation process have been calculated. A model combining a material balance and vapor-liquid equilibrium relations has been proposed under a constant vapor discharging flow rate and liquid composition changes have been calculated using the vapor pressures with respect to a dimensionless time. The behaviors have been compared with temperature and molten salt composition changes to simulate the process condition variation. The distillation of the residual salt has been dominated by LiCl which is the main component of the salt and CsCl of which vapor pressure is higher than that of LiCl would be readily removed. RbCl exhibits similar vapor pressure with LiCl and maintains its composition. However, $SrCl_2$ and $BaCl_2$ of which vapor pressures are much lower than that of LiCl are concentrated with time and expected to be possibly precipitated during the distillation when the initial compositions are increased.
Electrical treeing phenomenon, regarded as pre-breakdown which accelerates aging process leading an insulation to the complete breakdown, is with no doubt extremely fatal to the performance of the insulation. Investigated in this paper is electrical treeing representing local dielectric failure according to flow pattern, the flow history of liquid polyethylene formed during the extrusion process. Experiments of electrical tree initiation by means of ramp tests were conducted using newly developed electrode system with point-to-point structure. Constant voltage tests were also carried out with the electrode system to estimate the life time of the insulation. Results were analyzed using statistical method such as Weibull distribution.

The effects of subcooling and natural convection are studied numerically on the melting process of an initially subcooled phase-change medium filled inside a horizontal circular cylinder. It is postulated that melting continues with the tube wall kept at a constant temperature and with the unmelted solid core fixed. Primary emphasis is placed on the evolution of interface morphology, the local/overall heat transfer rate at the tube wall and at the interface, and the structure of natural convection. The numerical results are mainly presented in terms of the Rayleigh and subcooling numbers. As the degree of subcooling intensifies, the melting rate and the movement of the interface are impeded but the interfaces are of similar shape with the passage of time. The heat transfer characteristics are found to be mostly governed by the formation pattern of natural convection in the liquid phase. Good agreement with available experimental data is found.
A bubble trapped in the liquid manifold of INTELSAT IV F-7 spacecraft caused a mass imbalance between the System 1 propellant tanks and a wobble half angle of 0.38 degree to 0.48 degree. A maneuver on May 14, 1980 passed the bubble through the axial jet and allowed propellant to redistribute. A 0.2 rpm change in sin rate was observed with an exponential decay time constant of 6 minutes. In this paper, moment of inertia, tank geometry and hydrodynamic models are derived to match the observed spin rate data. The values of the total mass of propellant considered were 16, 19 and 20 kgs with corresponding mass imbalances of 14.3, 15 and 15.1 Kgs, respectively. The result shows excellent agreement with observed spin rate data but it was necessary to assume a greater mass of hydrazine in the tanks than propellant accounting indicated.

A rectangular test section is devised by assuming two dimensional melting of a solid phase change material heated from two sides which are maintained at constant temperature and allowing a free expansion due to density difference between solid and liquid. The timewise melting shape is recorded photographically by the shadow graph method for several experimental conditions. The analysis shows that the melting process consists of four regimes. At first, the pure conduction heat transfer is dominant, and as time goes by natural convection grows and plays a role greatly. Experiments are carried out varying not only the wall temperature but height of the wall. Each effect of them on the melting process is obtained in the form of combination of dimensionless parameters, $Ste^{0.8}\;FoRa^{0.2}$. An algebraic correlation is suggested, which predicts the melted fraction well.
A technique for the reduction of pulse pile-up effect in digital pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) of neutrons and gamma-rays with organic scintillation detectors is presented. The technique is based on an electronic reduction of the effective decay-time constant of scintillation pulses while retaining the PSD information of the pulses. The experimental results obtained with a NE213 liquid scintillation detector in a mixed radiation field of neutrons and gamma-rays are presented, demonstrating a figure of merit (FOM) of 1.20 ± 0.05 with an energy threshold of 350 keVee (electron equivalent energy) when the effective length of the pulses is reduced to 50 ns.

Observations on the near-nozzle behavior of an unsteady fuel spray through single cylindrical hole nozzle were made by phase Doopler anemometer and microphotographs. At the edge of the spray, droplet velocity peaked during needle opening and closing. Droplet sizes tended to be small on the edge of spray. The near-nozzle spray angle taken from the microphotographs was time-dependent, even though it increased with gas-to-liquid density ratio as expected. The near-nozzle spray angle was the greatest on the initial stage and decreased to a relatively constant value after about one third of the total injection duration regardless of the ambient gas conditions, even in the near-vaccum condition. The wider near-nozzle spray angle in the early stage is due to the flow characteristics inside the nozzle rather than aerodynamic interactions. However, once the spray was established, aerodynamic interactions are essential in the near-nozzle atomization.
This paper describes the effects of spray breakup model constants on spray and combustion characteristics in single cylinder compression engine. KIVA-3V code coupled with a CHEMKIN chemistry solver was used for numerical analysis. In this study, spray simulations and combustion simulations are studied simultaneously. Spray simulation was conducted in constant volume to reduce the effects of air-flow as swirl or tumble. The model validation was conducted and there are little difference between experiments and simulation, this differences were reasonable. In spray simulation, the effects of model constants on spray tip penetration, spray patter and SMD were studied. Furthermore, the analysis of effects of breakup variables on combustion and emissions characteristics was conducted. The results show the KH-RT breakup model constants affects spray and combustion characteristics strongly. Increasing KH model variable (B1) and RT model constants ($C_{\tau}$, $C_{RT}$) induced slower breakup time.
The present study investigates the evaporation heat transfer characteristics of nanofluid droplet for different nanoparticle sizes. Also, the heat transfer coefficient was measured at different nanoparticle concentrations during evaporation. From the experimental results, it is found that the evaporation behavior of sessile droplet can be considered as constant radius mode due to pinning effect. The total evaporation time of sessile droplet decreases with nanoparticle size up to 7.9% for 0.10 vol% nanofluid droplet. As nanoparticle concentration increases, the clear difference in heat transfer coefficient is observed, showing that the size effect should be examined. This result would be helpful in designing the correlation between the nanoparticle size and the heat transfer characteristics for various applications.
The vibration-vibration energy exchange of $N_2(v=1)+O_2(v=0){\to}N_2(v=0)+O_2(v=1)$ has been investigated, in particular, at low temperatures. The energy exchange rate constants are calculated by use of the solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation with the interaction potential of the colliding molecule as a perturbation term. The predicted rate constants are significantly agree with a experimental values in the range of 295∼$90^{\circ}K$. The consideration of the VV-VT coupling decreases the predicted pure VV energy exchange value by a factor of ∼2. When the collision frequency correction is introduced, the VV-VT rate constant is consistent with the observed value in the liquid phase. The consideration of the population of the rotational energy level increases the VV-VT value significantly.
