  • Epoxy-amine liquid prepolymers are extensively applied onto metallic substrates and cured to obtain painted materials or bonded joint structures. Overall performances of such systems depend on the created interphase between the organic layer and the substrate. When epoxy-amine liquid mixtures are applied onto more or less hydrated metallic oxide layer, concomitant amine chemical sorption and hydroxide dissolution appear lending to the chelate formation. As soon as the chelate concentration is higher than the solubility product, these species crystallize as sharp needles. Moreover, intrinsic and thermal residual stresses are developed within painted or bonded systems. When residual stresses are higher than the organic layer/substrate adhesion, buckling, blistering, debonding may occur leading to a catastrophic drop of system performances. Practical adhesion can be evaluated with either ultimate parameters (Fmax or Dmax) or the critical strain energy release rate, using the three point flexure test (ISO 14679-1997). We observe that, for the same system, the ultimate load decreases while residual stresses increase when the liquid/solid time increases. Ultimate loads and residual stresses depend on the metallic surface treatment. For these systems, the critical strain energy release rate which takes into account the residual stress profile and the Young's modulus gradient remains quite constant whatever the metallic surface treatment was. These variations will be discussed and correlate to the formation mechanisms of the interphase.

  • The viscosities of benzene have been determined at several temperatures and pressures to investigate the effect of temperature and pressure on the viscosity of benzene in liquid phase. When a falling ball viscometer with a constant volume contained a given amount of liquid benzene at desired temperatures and pressures, the viscosities of benzene in the viscometer could be evaluated from the measurements of the falling time of a skinker. The variations of the specific volume and the free volume of liquid benzene with temperature and pressure were, from the results, searched out. Finally, the effects of temperature and pressure on the viscosity of benzene were discussed by means of the variations of free volume with temperature and pressure.

  • The effects of liquid phase ozonation on seed dormant alleviation and subsequent seedling growth were studied using two plant seeds of Indian jointvetch (Aeschynomene indica L.) and Indian mallow (Abutilon avicennae Gaertn.). At a constant ozone concentration ($80g/m^3$), contact time varied from 10 to 60 min with 10 min interval. Germination rate, root length, and specific root length were compared after 3-day incubation on gel-medium. The germination rate increased significantly (p<0.05) in the 50 min treatment of Indian mallow by 30% compared to the control. Enhanced root elongation was observed in the seeds of 30 min treatment of Indian jointvetch and 30~50 min treatment of Indian mallow. Specific root length, an indicator of environmental change, did not show significant changes, suggesting the level of ozone treatment has no adverse effect on seedling development. The results indicate that liquid phase seed ozonation can be an effective on-site germination alleviation method in the application of phytoremediation.

  • There are various application of liquid crystal materials to devices, especially, blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) and nano-structured liquid crystal mixture have been studied recently because BPs existing temperature range has been expanded by polymer-stabilization and liquid crystal has been confined in room which has certain coherence length so that their particular characters, such as fast response time and optically isotropic state at no electric field, could apply to advanced liquid crystal display devices. However, there is an crucial problem which is high operating voltage from low Kerr constant and limited electric field utilization using in-plain electric field. In this paper, we will analyze cell structure in the way of using electric field and show effective electric field utilization to reduce operating voltage.

  • This study is based on a investigation regarding the evaporation rate of a volatile liquid(methanol, tetrahydrofuran, xylene) according to changes of the temperature and wind. The weight of a volatile liquid was standardized to 24 g and the mixture was formed with the same weight ratio. In order to discover about the effect of the wind velocity, small fan was installed at 10 cm above the entrance and 30 cm away in the direction of the cylinder. The effect of the wind velocity was tested at 0 m/s, 1.63 m/s, 2.03 m/s respectively and the effect of the temperature on the volatile liquid was experimented at the temperature of $21^{\circ}C$, $32^{\circ}C$, $52^{\circ}C$ in the constant temperature water base. As a result, in case of Xylene, the evaporation rate of the tetrahydrofuran and methanol showed 1.4 mg/min, 19.8 mg/min and 10.2 mg/min respectively. Also, the effect of the evaporation rate on the temperature of the volatile liquid and on the velocity of wind was shown to be very sensitive. At the same time, the evaporation rate of the mixture showed large difference compared to that of the single volatile liquid.

  • We have shown that the volcanic rocks from the northern part of Cheju Island can be divided into high $P_2O_5/K_2O$(HPK) and low $P_3O_5/K_2O$(LPK) groups, each with distinct geochemical characteristics(Park and Kwon, 1993a and b). This study reports mineral compositions for plagioc-lase, olivine, and clinopyroxene in order to see the dependence of mineral chemistry on the whole rock composition, and discusses equilibrium relationships between crystal and liquid. Plagioclase and olivine phenocrysts show no compositional differences for the two rock group. However, $Al^{ⅵ}/Al^{ⅳ}$ ratios of clinopyroxenes suggest that pyroxenes have fractionated at deeper level, and that the LPK group might have fractionated at higher pressure than the HPK group. These are in good agreement with our previous interpretation based on whole rock chemistry(Park and Kwon, 1993a). Although subhedral or euhedral form and homogenous composition for most plagioclase and clinopy-roxene phenocrysts suggest equilibrium relationship with liquid, the uncertainties associated with liquid, the uncertainites associated with equilibrium constant for these minerals do not allow testing equilibium relationship between mineral and liquid on the basis of chemistry. On the other hand, olivine phenocrysts in hawaiites, for which Kd is well known, show distinct nonequilibrium relationship with calculated liquid composi-tions, while those in other rock compositions are in equilibrium from those for other rocks. We report for the first time as far as we know plagioclase xenocryst and pigeonite inclusion in plagioclase, which indicates assimilation process. In conclusion, these mineralogical observations imply that mag-matic processes underneath the Cheju volcano were not simple.

  • The single crystalline thick fi1ms of Bi:Y$_3$Fe$_{5}$ $O_{12}$(Bi:YIG) were grown on (GdCa)$_3$(GaMgZr)$_{5}$ $O_{12}$(SGGG) by Liquid Phase Epitaxy (LPE). The changes of lattice mismatch and Bi concentration were investigated in the thick film growth as a function of PO/Bi$_2$ $O_3$ molar ratio, with keeping constant of substrate rotation speed, supercooling and growth time. It was grown that the lattice constant of the garnet single crystalline thick films and Bi content increased with decreasing of PO/Bi$_2$ $O_3$ molar ratio. Bi concentration decreased with increasing of the film thickness.

  • The single crystalline thick films of Y$_3$Fe$\sub$5/O$\sub$12/(YIG), Y$_3$Fe$\sub$5/O$\sub$12/(Bi:YIG), (TbBi)$_3$(FeAlGa)$\sub$5/O$\sub$12/ (TbBi:YIG) were grown on (GdCa)$_3$(GaMgZr)$\sub$5/O$\sub$12/ (SGGG) by Liquid Phase Epitaxy (LPE). The change of lattice mismatch, Bi concentration, characteristic of magnetic and surface morphology were investigated in the thick film growth as a function of species and amount of chemical element, while substrate rotation speed, supercooling and growth time were kept constant. It was observed that the lattice constant of garnet single crystalline thick films of TbBi:YIG (12.500 ${\AA}$) is closed to the one of the substrate (12.496 ${\AA}$). Besides magnetic field of saturation exhibits excellent results (150 Oe).

  • In the process of continuous hot-dip galvanizing, it is well known that the gas wiping through an air knife system is most effective because of its uniformity in coating thickness, possibility of thin coating, workability in high speed, and simplicity of control. However, gas wiping used in the galvanizing process brings about a problem of splashing at the strip edge above a certain high speed of process. It is also known that the problem of edge splashing is more harmful than that at the mid strip surface. For a given liquid(of a certain viscosity and surface tension), the onset of splashing mainly depends upon the strip velocity, the gas-jet pressure, and the nozzle's stand-off distance. In these connections in the present study, we proposed three kinds of air knife system having nozzles of constant expansion rate, and compared the jet structures issuing from newly proposed nozzle systems with the result by a conventional one. In numerical analysis, the governing equations are consisted of two-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations, and the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is employed to solve turbulence stress and so on. As the result, it is found that we had better use the constant expansion-rate nozzle which can be interpreted from the point view of the energy saving for the same coating thickness. Also, we better reduce the size of separation bubble and enhance the cutting ability at the strip surface, by using an air-knife having constant expansion-rate nozzle.
