  • Analytical solutions are obtained for the director reorientation dynamics of both VA and IPS modes by considering a possible effect of the molecular flow, providing a theoretical basis of the relations between the response characteristics of the display and the physical properties of the liquid crystal material used. The relevant properties of practical liquid crystal mixtures are quantitatively reviewed and the features of superior substances, used in formulating those mixtures, are presented.

  • We have prepared the plasma-polymerized membrane for pervaporation of organic-liquid mixtures by the plasma polymerization technique. Plasma polymerization techniques were utilized in the development of hydrophilic composite membranes having high hydrogen ion permeability and excellent dimensional stability. To develop an organic liquid permselective Membrane, suppressing membrane swearing as well as enhancing the solubility difference is impotant. the objectives of the present study are to disign a suitable membrane for an organic-mixture system by the control of the plasma-polymer solubility.

  • Three-ring types liquid crystalline compounds having fluoro and isothiocyanate substituent were synthesized and their physical and electro-optical properties were measured to evaluate the applications to active matrix VA liquid crystal displays. The tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) catalyzed cross coupling of aryl boronic acids with aryl halides is used to prepare trans-4'-Alkoxy-2,3-difluoro-3'-isothiocyanato-4-(4-alkylcyclohexyl}-biphenyl series. The synthesized compounds showed the nematic liquid crystalline phase and the negative dielectric anisotropy. The prepared mixtures showed faster response time and lower threshold voltage than their host mixture.

  • The recent Bistable Nematic ($BiNem^{(R)}$) LCD technology presents long term bistability, high level passive matrix multiplexing, gray levels capabilities and high optical quality. The $BiNem^{(R)}$ device, based on anchoring breaking, needs specific low anchoring strength materials - alignment layers and liquid crystal mixtures. We present here our approach to develop nematic mixtures with wide enough temperature range and low zenithal anchoring energy.

  • Equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations are used to evaluate the transport coefficients of argonkrypton mixtures at two liquid states (state A: 94.4 K and 1 atm; state B: 135 K and 39.5 atm) via modified Green-Kubo formulas. The composition dependency of the volume at state A obeys close to the linear model for ideal liquid mixture, while that at state B differs from the linear model probably due to the high pressure. The radial distribution functions for the Ar-Kr mixture (x = 2/3) show a mixing effect: the first peak of g11 is higher than that of g(r) for pure Ar and the first peak of g22 is lower than that of g(r) for pure Kr. An exponential model of engineering correlation for diffusion coefficient (D) and shear viscosity (η) is superior to the simple linear model for ideal liquid mixtures. All three components of thermal conductivity (λpm, λtm, and λti) at state A and hence the total thermal conductivity decrease with the increase of x. At state B, the change in λtm is dominant over those in λpm and λti, and hence the total thermal conductivity decrease with the increase of x.

  • This paper presents the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data measured for carbon dioxide and propane mixtures. Their mixtures were considered as promising alternative refrigerants due to good thermophysical properties and negligible environmental impact. The isothermal VLE data were measured at eight temperatures ranging from 253.15 to 323.15 K in the circulation type equipment with a view cell. The binary system was found to be a zeotropic mixture in the tested temperature range and could be correlated with sufficient accuracy by using the Peng-Robinson equation of state (PR EoS) with the van der Waals one fluid mixing rule. A comparison with published experimental VLE data has been carried out by means of the PR equation of state. In addition, the phase behaviors of carbon dioxide and propane mixtures were analyzed based on the measured VLE data.

  • Reactive mesogens were used to prepare photo-cured liquid crystal films in which orientations of liquid crystal molecules were preserved by crosslinked networks of cured reactive mesogens. The molecular orientations of liquid crystal mixtures of photo-reative mesogens and non-reactive nematic liquid crystals were studied and compared before and after curing reactions. The effects of temperature and the amount of the non-reactive nematic liquid crystal in the mixture on birefringence of the liquid crystal films were investigated. It was found that optical compensation films with different birefringence could be prepared by controlling the amount of the nematic liquid crystals in the reactive mesogen mixtures.

  • The vapor-liquid equilibrium and miscibility measurement apparatus was developed and used to obtain data for refrigerant/oil mixture. The vapor-liquid equilibrium and miscibility data for R-410a/POE32 and R-410A/POE46 oil mixtures are obtained over the temperature range from -20 to $60^{\circ}C\;with\;10^{\circ}C$ intervals and the oil concentration range from 0 to 90 wt%. Using the experimental data, an empirical model is developed to predict the temperature-pressure-concentration relations for R-410A/POE oil mixtures at equilibrium. In the R-410A/POE32 oil mixture, the average root-mean-square deviation between measured data and calculated results from the empirical model is 2.00% and in the R-410a/POE46 oil mixture, that is 3.69%. Flory-Huggins theory is also used to predict refrigerant/oil mixture behavior. Miscibility for R-410A/POE32 oil mixture was observed all over the experimental conditions. Immiscibility for R-410A/POE46 oil mixture was observed at the low oil concentrations(10~30 wt%).

  • The effect of a water-miscible ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate $([BMIM][BF_4])$, on the horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-catalyzed oxidation of 2-methoxyphenol (guaiacol) with hydrogen peroxide $(H_2O_2)$ was investigated. HRP maintains its high activity in the aqueous mixtures containing various concentrations of the ionic liquid and even in 90% (v/v) ionic liquid. In order to minimize the effect of solution viscosity on the kinetic constants of HRP catalysis, the enzymatic reactions in the subsequent kinetic study were performed in water-ionic liquid mixtures containing 25% (v/v) ionic liquid at maximum. As the concentration of $[BMIM][BF_4]$ increased for the oxidation of guaiacol by HRP, the $K_m$ value increased with a slight decrease in the $K_{cat}$ value: The $K_m$ value increased from 2.8 mM in 100% (v/v) water to 22.5mM in 25% (v/v) ionic liquid, indicating that ionic liquid significantly weakens the binding affinity of guaiacol to HRP.

  • Explosive limit is one of the major physical properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. Explosive limits are used to classify flammable liquids according to their relative flammability. Such a classification is important for the safe handling of flammable liquids which constitute the solvent mixtures. Explosive limits of all compounds and solvent mixtures can be calculated with the appropriate use of the fundamental laws of Raoult, Dalton, Le Chatelier and activity coefficient models. In this paper, Raoult,s law and van Laar equation(activity coefficient model) are shown to be applicable for the prediction of the explosive limits in the flammable ethylacetate-toluene system. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with literature data within a given percent. From a given results, by the use of the proposed equations, it is possible to predict explosive limits of the other flammable mixtures. It is hoped eventually that this method will permit the estimation of the explosive Properties of flammable mixtures with improved accuracy and the broader application for other flammable stances.
