  • This study performed the physical and mechanical experiment on the samples of costal marine clays individually collected in western and southern regions to identify the characteristics of western and southern costal marine clay. Based on the experiment result, the characteristics of costal marine clay is identified undrained shear strength. Based on the experiment result on the physical and mechanical characteristics of costal marine clays, the regression is presented that can analyze the mechanical characteristics of undrained shear strength in costal marine clay of Korea, region of Korea and western-southern region. The correlation of uniaxial compressive strength and undrained shear strength was suitable for use of western-southern region correlation equation. The test result of Jeonnam Yeosu area compares with prediction results of previous researchers formula and western-southern region formula. Prediction results appear highest reliability on the 0.827 of coefficient of determination in the prediction results of the western-southern region formula.

  • In baseball, estimation of winning percentage is critical and many studies for this topic have been actively performed. Pairwise winning percentage estimation using Pythagorean winning percentages of individual teams against other individual teams has the property that the sum of estimated winning percentage totals must be a constant. In this paper, we consider two types of pairwise estimation including linear formula and Pythagorean formula to the Korean baseball data of seasons from 2013 to 2016 under the criterions of RMSE and MAD. In conclusion, pairwise Pythagorean methods have the smaller RMSE and MAD than traditional Pythagorean methods. We suggest the optimal pairwise Pythagorean formula with a fixed exponent. Also we show that there are very little differences of RMSE and MAD between variation in exponent values.

  • A series of experimental studies are conducted on the deformation and shear strength property of compacted loess. The results reveal that the relationships of both the initial moisture content (w) and the initial degree of compaction (K) of compacted loess with cohesion (w) and the angle of internal friction (${\varphi}$) are linear. The relationship between the secant modulus ($E_{soi}$) and K is also linear. The relationship between $E_{soi}$ and w can be fitted well by a second-order polynomial. Further, when the influences of w and K are ignored, the relationship between the confined compression strain (${\varepsilon}$) and vertical pressure (p) can be expressed by a formula. A correction formula for the deformation of compacted loess caused by a change in w and K is derived on the basis of the study results.

  • We propose a sliding surface design method for linear systems with mismatched uncertainties in the state space model. In terms of LMIs, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a linear sliding surface such that the reduced-order equivalent sliding mode dynamics restricted to the linear sliding surface is not only stable but completely invariant to mismatched uncertainties. We give an explicit formula of all such linear switching surfaces in terms of solution matrices to the LMI existence condition. We also give a switching feedback control law, together with a design algorithm. Additionally, we give some hints for designing linear switching surfaces guaranteeing pole clustering constraints or linear quadratic performance bound constraints. Finally, we give a design example in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

  • The aim of this study was to produce a simple and inexpensive technique for estimating the obturator foramen area (OFA) from young calves based on the hypothesis that OFA can be extrapolated from simple linear measurements. Three linear measurements - dorsoventral height, craneocaudal width and total perimeter of obturator foramen - were obtained from 55 bovine hemicoxae. Different algorithms for determining OFA were then produced with a regression analysis (curve fitting) and statistical analysis software. The most simple equation was OFA ($mm^2$) = [3,150.538 + ($36.111^*CW$)] - [147,856.033/DH] (where CW = craneocaudal width and DH = dorsoventral height, both in mm), representing a good nonlinear model with a standard deviation of error for the estimate of 232.44 and a coefficient of multiple determination of 0.846. This formula may be helpful as a repeatable and easily performed estimation of the obturator foramen area in young bovines. The area of the obturator foramen magnum can thus be estimated using this regression formula.

  • Geometric invariants are basic tools for geometric processing and computer vision. In this paper, we give a linear approximation for the differentiation of the binormal vector field of a space curve by using the forward and backward differences of discrete binormal vectors. Two kind of discrete torsion, say, back-ward torsion $T_b$ and forward torsion $T_f$ can be defined by the dot product of the (backward and forward) discrete differentiation of binormal vectors that are linear approximations of torsion. Using Frenet formula and Taylor series expansion, we give error estimations for the discrete torsions. We also give numerical tests for a curve. Notably the average of $T_b$ and $T_f$ looks more stable in errors.

  • In the present study, laboratory pull-out tests with various geogrid shapes are carried out to investigate behavior characteristics of the geogrid. Also, an interface pullout formula is proposed for predicting and interpreting pullout test result. The analytical model is based on the assumption that the reinforcement is linear elastic during the pullout test. And then, maximum pullout force, frictional resistance and active length for each of the grid density ratio are predicted based on the interface pullout formula. The predicted results were compared with those of pullout tests, and showed in general good agreements.

  • In this paper, we propose a formula to compute the exact autocorrelations of the autoregressive (AR) process. For an arbitrary value of N, we first review the Yule-Walker equation and some basic properties of the AR model. We then modify the Yule-Walker equation to construct a new system of N+1 linear equations that can be used to solve for the N+1 autocorrelation coefficients for lags 0, 1, …, N, provided that the AR parameters of order N and the power of the white noise of the AR process are given.
