A three-dimensional linear model and the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS) were used to simulate parabola-shaped disturbances and clouds in the lee of a bell-shaped mountain. The ARPS model was compared in the x-y plane against the linear model's analytic solution. Under similar conditions with the linear theory, the ARPS produced well-developed parabola-shaped mountain disturbances and confirmed the features are accounted for in the linear regime. A parabola-shaped cloud in the lee of an isolated bell-shaped mountain was successfully simulated in the ARPS after 6 hours of integration time with the prescribed initial and boundary conditions, as well as a microphysical scheme.
Artificial neural networks (ANNs), for a first time, were successfully developed for the modeling and prediction of solvent effects on rate constant of [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of diethyl azodicarboxylate with ethyl vinyl ether in various solvents with diverse chemical structures using quantitative structure-activity relationship. The most positive charge of hydrogen atom (q$^+$), dipole moment ($\mu$), the Hildebrand solubility parameter (${\delta}_H^2$) and total charges in molecule (q$_t$) are inputs and output of ANN is log k$_2$ . For evaluation of the predictive power of the generated ANN, the optimized network with 68 various solvents as training set was used to predict log k$_2$ of the reaction in 16 solvents in the prediction set. The results obtained using ANN was compared with the experimental values as well as with those obtained using multi-parameter linear regression (MLR) model and showed superiority of the ANN model over the regression model. Mean square error (MSE) of 0.0806 for the prediction set by MLR model should be compared with the value of 0.0275 for ANN model. These improvements are due to the fact that the reaction rate constant shows non-linear correlations with the descriptors.
A quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) study is performed for modeling and prediction of oral bioavailabilities of 216 diverse set of drugs. After calculation and screening of molecular descriptors, linear and nonlinear models were developed by using multiple linear regression (MLR), artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF) techniques. Comparison between statistical parameters of these models indicates the suitability of SVM over other models. The root mean square errors of SVM model were 5.933 and 4.934 for training and test sets, respectively. Robustness and reliability of the developed SVM model was evaluated by performing of leave many out cross validation test, which produces the statistic of $Q^2_{SVM}=0.603$ and SPRESS = 7.902. Moreover, the chemical applicability domains of model were determined via leverage approach. The results of this study revealed the applicability of QSAR approach by using SVM in prediction of oral bioavailability of drugs.

The detection of corporate failures is a subject that has been particularly amenable to cross-sectional financial ratio analysis. In most of firms, however, the financial data are available over past years. Because of this, a model utilizing these longitudinal data could provide useful information on the prediction of bankruptcy. To correctly reflect the longitudinal and firm-specific data, the generalized linear model with assuming the first order AR(autoregressive) process is proposed. The method is motivated by the clinical research that several characteristics are measured repeatedly from individual over the time. The model is compared with several other predictive models to evaluate the performance. By using the financial data from manufacturing corporations in the Korea Stock Exchange (KSE) list, we will discuss some experiences learned from the procedure of sampling scheme, variable transformation, imputation, variable selection, and model evaluation. Finally, implications of the model with repeated measurement and future direction of research will be discussed.

A variety of studies to predict students' performance have been conducted since educational data such as web-log files traced from Learning Management System (LMS) are increasingly used to analyze students' learning behaviors. However, it is still challenging to predict students' learning achievement in blended learning environment where online and offline learning are combined. In higher education, diverse cases of blended learning can be formed from simple use of LMS for administrative purposes to full usages of functions in LMS for online distance learning class. As a result, a generalized model to predict students' academic success does not fulfill diverse cases of blended learning. This study compares two blended learning classes with each prediction model. The first blended class which involves online discussion-based learning revealed a linear regression model, which explained 70% of the variance in total score through six variables including total log-in time, log-in frequencies, log-in regularities, visits on boards, visits on repositories, and the number of postings. However, the second case, a lecture-based class providing regular basis online lecture notes in Moodle show weaker results from the same linear regression model mainly due to non-linearity of variables. To investigate the non-linear relations between online activities and total score, RF (Random Forest) was utilized. The results indicate that there are different set of important variables for the two distinctive types of blended learning cases. Results suggest that the prediction models and data-mining technique should be based on the considerations of diverse pedagogical characteristics of blended learning classes.
Observed climate data are processed under the assumption that their time series are stationary, as in multi-step temperature and precipitation prediction, which usually leads to low prediction accuracy. If a climate system model is based on a single prediction model, the prediction results contain significant uncertainty. In order to overcome this drawback, this study uses a method that integrates ensemble prediction and a stepwise regression model based on a mean-valued generation function. In addition, it utilizes empirical mode decomposition (EMD), which is a new method of handling time series. First, a non-stationary time series is decomposed into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), which are stationary and multi-scale. Then, a different prediction model is constructed for each component of the IMF using numerical ensemble prediction combined with stepwise regression analysis. Finally, the results are fit to a linear regression model, and a short-term climate prediction system is established using the Visual Studio development platform. The model is validated using temperature data from February 1957 to 2005 from 88 weather stations in Guangxi, China. The results show that compared to single-model prediction methods, the EMD and ensemble prediction model is more effective for forecasting climate change and abrupt climate shifts when using historical data for multi-step prediction.

An algorithm for estimating incident angles of multiple broaband signals is proposed. The method adopts semicausal model for two dimensional linear prediction filter coefficients such that the arithmatic averag of the mean squared values of the forward and reverse prediction arrors is minimized. Preliminary results demonstrating the performance of the proposed method are presented. Simulation results indicate that the performance depends on signal-to-noise ratio and prediction order in spatial demension.
In this paper, a seasonal variable selection method using the spectral analysis accompanied with seasonal linear model is suggested. The suggested method is applied to the prediction of intra-day call arrivals at a large North American commercial bank call center and a signi cant intra-month seasonal variable I detected. This newly detected seasonal factor is included in the seasonal linear model and is compared with the seasonal linear models without this variable to see whether the new variable helps to improve the forecasting performance. The seasonal linear model with the new variable outperformed the models without it in one-day-ahead forecasting.
Most of the studies on stock price predictability using the linear model conclude that there are little possibility to predict the future price movement. But some anomalous patterns may be generated by remaining market inefficiency or regulation, market system that is facilitated to prevent the market failure. And these anomalous pattern, if exist, make them difficult to predict the stock price movement with linear model. In this study, I try to find the anomalous pattern using the ANN model. And by comparing the predictability of ANN model with the predictability of correspondent linear model, I want to show the importance of recognitions of anomalous pattern in stock price prediction. I find that ANN model could have the superior performance measured with the accuracy of prediction and investment return to correspondent linear model. This result means that there may exist the anomalous pattern that can't be recognized with linear model, and it is necessary to consider the anomalous pattern to make superior prediction performance.
The local prediction method utilizing embedding vector loses the prediction power when the parameter r estimation is not exact for predicting the chaos time series induced from the high order differential equation. In spite of the fact that there have been a lot of suggestions regarding how to estimate the delay time ($\tau$), no specific method is proposed to apply to any time series. The inclinded linear model, which utilizes inclinded netter, yields satisfying degree of prediction power without estimating exact delay time ($\tau$). The usefulness of this approach has been indicated not only theoretically but also in practical situation when the method w8s applied to economical time series analysis.
