Analysis of slope stability based on evaluation of force balance

  • The paper presents a new approach for the analysis of slope stability that is based on the numerical solution of a differential equation, which describes the thrust force distribution within the potential sliding mass. It is based on the evaluation of the thrust force value at the endpoint of the slip line. A coupled approximation of the slip and thrust lines is applied. The model is based on subdivision of the sliding mass into slices that are normal to the slip line and the equilibrium differential equation is obtained as the slice width approaches zero. Opposed to common iterative limit equilibrium procedures the present method is straightforward and gives an estimate of slope stability at the value of the safety factor prescribed in advance by standard requirements. Considering the location of the thrust line within the soil mass above the trial slip line eliminates the possible development of a tensile thrust force in the stable and critical states of the slope. The location of the upper boundary point of the thrust line is determined by the equilibrium of the upper triangular slice. The method can be applied to any smooth shape of a slip line, i.e., to a slip line without break points. An approximation of the slip and thrust lines by quadratic parabolas is used in the numerical examples for a series of slopes.

  • Dynamic thermal rating of the overhead transmission lines is affected by many uncertain factors. The ambient temperature, wind speed and wind direction are the main sources of uncertainty. Measurement uncertainty is an important parameter to evaluate the reliability of measurement results. This paper presents the uncertainty analysis based on Monte Carlo. On the basis of establishing the mathematical model and setting the probability density function of the input parameter value, the probability density function of the output value is determined by probability distribution random sampling. Through the calculation and analysis of the transient thermal balance equation and the steady- state thermal balance equation, the steady-state current carrying capacity, the transient current carrying capacity, the standard uncertainty and the probability distribution of the minimum and maximum values of the conductor under 95% confidence interval are obtained. The simulation results indicate that Monte Carlo method can decrease the computational complexity, speed up the calculation, and increase the validity and reliability of the uncertainty evaluation.

  • This paper presents the basic quench protection idea for the HTS(High-Temperature Superconducting) cable. In Korea power system, the transfer capability of transmission line is limited by the voltage stability, HTS cable could be one of the countermeasure to enhance the transfer limit with its higher current capacity and lower impedance[1]. However, the quench characteristic makes not only HTS cable to loss its superconductivity, but also change the impedance of the transmission line and power system operating condition dramatically. This pheonominum threats HTS cable safety as well as power system security, therefore a proper protection scheme and security control counterplan have to be established before HTS cable implementation. In this paper, the quench characteristics of HTS cable for the fault current based on heat balance equation was established and a proper protection method regarding conventional protection system was suggested.

A Study on Crosstalk in High Speed Digital Signal Transmission Line (고속 디지털 신호 전송선로에서의 Crosstalk 에 관한 연구)

  • The prediction of crosstalk in one of important problems in estimating the EMC of a system for high speed digital signal transmission. Crosstalk curves are shown in terms of characteristic impedance of lines spacing between lines and rise time of pulse by using general multiple coupled transmission line equation and harmonic-balance method. The coupled symmetrical two-line on dielectric material epoxy-glass FR 4(${\varepsilon}_r$), is fabricated to measure crosstalk occuring at the near end and far end of the passive line. The inter-line is inserted to reduce crosstalk between two microstrip lines. The simulation results and the measurement results are shown and found to be very close.

A Modified Heuristic Algorithm for the Mixed Model Assembly Line Balancing

  • This paper proposes a modified heuristic mixed model assembly line (MMAL) balancing algorithm that provides consistent station assignments on a model by model basis as well as on a station by station. Basically, some of single model line balancing techniques are modified and incorporated to be fit into the MMAL. The proposed algorithm is based on N.T. Thomopoulos' [8] method and supplemented with several well proven single model line balancing techniques proposed in the literature until recently. Hoffman's precedence matrix [2] is used to indicate the ordering relations among tasks. Arcus' Rule IX [1] is applied to generate rapidly a fairly large number of feasible solutions. Consequently, this proposed algorithm reduces the fluctuations in operation times among the models as well as the stations and the balance delays. A numerical example shows that the proposed algorithm can provide a good feasible solution in a relatively short time and generate relatively better solutions comparing to other three existing methods.

  • The tunnel excavations are used for construction of common utility tunnel, electric tunnel, communication line tunnel, water supply and public sewerage pile line in urban area. The trench cut methods were mainly used in the past, but now, tunneling method is more being used. The tunnel excavation method like as NATM, Messer-Shield, Semi-Shield Methods are being applied to small section tunnel in Korea. The actual construction results of seme-shield method are increasing due to simplified construction process and reduced noise and vibration. And also this method is being used frequently in waterway tunnel and construction of prevention flooding recently. The seme-shield method design guideline is absence except for electric line tunnel construction in Korea, because of the semi-shield method was developed in Europe and Japan. In the prescriptive design, engineer's subjects are tending to intervene, because of absence of standard and specification for details. Therefore, Design and Construction Problems of Semi-Shield Method were described and construction trouble was introduced for exam. These problem and construction troubles have to be examined thoroughly in advance.

The Stern Hull Form Design using the Flow Analysis around Stern Skeg (선미 스케그 주위의 유동 분석에 의한 선미 형상 설계)

  • The optimized distance between skegs and angle of the skeg for a standard twin-skeg type LNG carrier were presented using the CFD and model tests. The evaluation method of self-propulsion performance was derived based on the results of CFD and confirmed the validity through model tests. The analyses to assess self-propulsion performance using CFD were shown by flow line patterns on the skeg surface, nominal wake distribution in the propeller plane and the evaluation for flow balance around stern skegs. The optimized ship that was applied to the optimized two design parameters in stern skeg arrangement for target ship was derived in this work. Finally speed performance of mother ship which is existing ship and optimized ship were compared through CFD and model tests. And the usefulness about the evaluation method of self-propulsion performance was reconfirmed.

Dynamic Walking of a Biped Robot

  • This paper mainly deals with the dynamic walking of a biped robot. At first, in order to walk in various environments, it is desirable to adapt to such ground conditions with a suitable foot motion, and maintain the stability of the robot by a smooth hip motion. A method to plan a walking pattern consisting of a foot trajectory and a hip trajectory is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by simulation results. Secondly, the paper brings forward a balance control technique based on off-line walking pattern with real-time modification. At last, the concept of Zero Moment Point (ZMP) is used to evaluate dynamic stability.

Line Balanced Assembly Sequence Generation Based on a Verification of Disassemblability and Work Time (분해도 및 작업시간 산정을 통한 균형잡힌 조립공정계획에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents a method of a line balanced assembly sequence generation based on the verification of a disassemblability and a work time. To derive the disassemblability for a part to be disassembled, first we inference collision free assembly directions by extracting separable directions fur the part. And we determine the disassemblability defined by the separability and stability cost. The separability cost represents a facility of the part disassembly operation, and the stability cost which represents a degree of the stability for the base assembly motion. Based upon the results, we propose a new approach of evaluating work time using neural networks. The proposed assembly sequence generation provides an effective means of solving the line balancing problem and gives a design guidance of planning assembly lay-out in flexible manufacturing application. Example study is given to illustrate the concepts and procedure of the proposed schemes.

  • Line Balancing is the method enflowing workparts smoothly by balancing the worktime of processes, and reduces the cycle time. Soccer is the sports attacking the opposite team and defending a friendly area efficiently by means of ball. To accomplish this purpose, space balancing is the necessary condition. Soccer 'system' what we called 'formation' is the basic frame to balance the space of playground, operate the tactics. This paper introduces 'Dual Hexagon System', a quite new system in soccer, using line balancing principle. It also explains the correlations between line balancing and dual hexagon system, distinctions and position names of dual hexagon system, and then suggests success factors.
