  • In many people's minds, health promotion is simply a more modern term covering roughly the same field as disease prevention or life style related reduction of the risk factors of chronic disease. A review of the modern literature of health promotion make it clear that there is more to this term than what is involved in functioning as a synonym for disease prevention. Therefore, in order to reach a clear understanding of what health promotion is, this study suggest the concept of the health balance model. Health balance is represented in terms of an equilibrium between physical, social, and life-style-related health challenges on the one hand and health potential on the other hand. Thus, health promotion strategies encompasses both the reduction of health challenges and the strengthening of health potential. Many elements of reducing health challenge are mainly related to the regulation laws. Aspects of strengthening of health potential are related to activities of health center. Therefore, health promotion strategies at a community level should be included in regional health planning which is implemented by health center.

  • We examined breakfast patterns and preferences in 420 elementary school students (216 boys, 206 girls) in the Chung-nam area. About thirty percent of the subjects had breakfast irregularly. The main reasons for skipping breakfast were having a 'poor appetite' and being 'busy'. The person who prepared breakfast was the 'mother' in both groups. Subjects were satisfied with 'Korean style' menu but dissatisfied with 'rice porridge-style'. Multiple regression analysis indicated that the 'frequency of having breakfast' was positively related to the subject's 'frequency of having breakfast with their mother'. On the other hand, the frequency of having breakfast was negatively related to feeling obligated to have breakfast. The multiple regression analysis also indicated that a Korean style 'breakfast preference' was positively related to the mother's age and negatively related to their 'wake-up time'. A 'breakfast preference for bread and milk' was positively related to 'bed time' and negatively related to the 'age of the father'. Our results will provide critical information for the nutritional education of elementary school students.

The subjects were 213 children and their parents who lived in Kwanak-ku, Seoul. The three-way analysis of variance was employed. The main results were as follows: 1. Children's autonomy was varied significantly according to their sex. Girls do better by themselves than boys do in toileting, washing and drying hands, putting on and buttoning up a coat, putting on clothes, washing and drying their faces. Children's autonomy also varied significantly according to age. A majority of the autonomy subsets increased as the children's ages increased. However, drying their hands with a towel, removing their coats, and drinking water did not vary by age. 2. Children's autonomy also varied significantly according to their parents' feeding style. A responsive feeding style encouraged children to drink water by themselves. 3. The group with the highest score in self-help skills in toileting was 6-year-old girls, and the group with the lowest score was 3-year-old boys. Additionally, the groups with the highest scores in toileting were 4-year-old girls whose parents demonstrated a neglective feeding style, 5-year-old girls whose parents demonstrated an authoritative feeding style, 5-year-old girls whose parents demonstrated a responsive feeding style, 3-year-old boys whose parents demonstrated a responsive feeding style and 6-year-old boys whose parents demonstrated a neglective feeding style. Conversely, the groups with the lowest scores in toileting were 3-year-old girls whose parents demonstrated an authoritarian feeding style, 5-year-old girls whose parents demonstrated a neglective feeding style, and 3-year-old and 6-year-old boys whose parents demonstrated an authoritarian feeding style. 4. • Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the nutrition quotient (NQ) by mother's parenting style which may influence the NQ in preschool children. Methods: Subjects were 310 mothers and their 4-6 year old children. The questionnaire composed of demographic characteristics, mother's parenting style at meal time and eating behavior as measured by NQ questions. The NQ questions consisted of 19 food behavior checklist items and all items were grouped into 5 factors: balance, diversity, moderation, regularity, and practice. Mother's parenting style was classified by using words for nutrition education at meal time. All data were statistically analyzed by SPSS program (Ver. 23) and the statistical differences in variables were evaluated by Student's t-test, ${\chi}^2$-test, One-way ANOVA. Results: We observed that in children whose mothers use the parenting style at meal time of 'explanation' and 'compliment & cheer up' had high dietary regularity, diversity, practice. The children of mothers who use the parenting style at meal time of 'persuasion' and 'reward' were found to have a lower degree of balance, diversity, and practice. Especially, children of 'reward' style mothers had lower moderation of dietary life. On the other hand, among the parenting style at meal time of 'comparison & demand', 'treating' and 'faire', there was no significant difference in the NQ factor by each group. NQ grade was higher among those who used more explanation (p < 0.001) and persuasion (p < 0.01) and with use of less persuasion (p < 0.01) and reward (p < 0.01). The positive association observed between the frequency of dietary education of mothers and higher NQ grade indicated the degree of dietary practices of those children. On the other hand, the children of mothers who rarely practice the dietary education at home had lower NQ grade (p < 0.001). Conclusions: In order to promote children's proper dietary behaviors, it is important to provide nutrition education to children as well as provide guidance on parenting style at meal time.
