Effects of Grit in Nursing Students on Self-Directed Learning Ability and Adjustment to College Life (간호대학생의 그릿이 자기주도 학습능력과 대학생활적응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is a descriptive research study to analyze the effects of grit in nursing students on self-directed learning ability and adjustment to university life. Data was collected from 260 nursing students including first and second-year nursing students in Region C University. The data was analyzed to find relationships among grit, self-directed learning ability, and college life adjustment using frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. The results showed the subdomains of grit in which grit in nursing students affected self-directed learning ability were consistency of interest (t=2.423, p<.05) and perseverance of effort (t=3.761, p<.001). The explanation power of the regression model was 40.2%, which was a statistically significant result (F=23.609, p<.001). The subdomains of grit in which grit in nursing students affected adjustment to college life were the consistency of interest (t=3.112, p<.001) and perseverance of effort (t=3.930, p<.001). The explanation power of the regression model was 43.2%, which was a statistically significant result (F=30.608, p<.001). These results show that it is necessary to develop educational programs to enhance individual nursing students' grit, self-directed learning ability, and college-life adjustment.

Children's Representations of Mothers and Preschool Adjustment: Analysis of Mediating Effect of Peer Competence (유아의 어머니 표상과 유아교육기관 적응: 또래 유능성의 매개효과 검증)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of children's representations of mothers and peer competence on preschool adjustment. 102 preschoolers (47 boys and 55 girls, aged 4-5) participated in this study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling analysis. The results were as follows: Firstly, children's representations of mothers had a direct effect on peer competence. Secondly, peer competence had a direct effect on preschool adjustment. Thirdly, children's representations of mothers did not directly affect preschool adjustment, but their representations of mothers did indirectly affect preschool adjustment, through peer competence. In conclusion, children's representations of mothers and peer competence influence preschool adjustment.

Effects and Development of an Experience-based Sex Education Program for Adjustment to Puberty in Upper Elementary Students (초등학교 고학년 아동의 사춘기 적응증진을 위한 학교기반 성교육체험 프로그램의 개발 및 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an experience-based sex education program to improve adjustment to puberty in elementary school students in the upper grades and to verify its effectiveness. Methods: This study had a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The subjects of this study were a total of 95 sixth-graders in Y city (experimental group: 48, control group: 47). The measurement variables were sexual knowledge, body image, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life. Four sessions of the experience-based sex education program to improve adjustment to puberty, consisting of 40 minutes per session, were provided to the experimental group. Results: Children's sexual knowledge, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life in the experimental group, which participated in the experience-based sexual education program to improve adjustment to puberty, showed a significant increase compared to the control group. However, there was no statistically significant difference in body image. Conclusion: This study presents the development of an experience-based sex education program for adjustment to puberty to overcome the shortcomings of existing sex education programs that are limited to sexual knowledge and attitudes, and also verified that the sexual knowledge, self-esteem, and life satisfaction of the elementary school students who were provided with the program improved meaningfully.

Effects of Undergraduate Students' Stress, Social Support, and Resilience on College Life Adjustment (대학생의 스트레스, 사회적지지, 회복탄력성이 대학생활적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of stress, social support, and resilience on the university life as predictors of college life adjustment. For this purpose, the questionnaires were administered to 145 college students in Busan, and correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and mediation analysis were conducted using SPSS 18.0. The main results are as follows. First, the significant factors influencing college life adjustment were stress (B = -.351, p <.01), social support(B = -.210, p <.05) resilience (B = .355, p < .01), 30.6% explanatory power, and resilience was the most influential factor. Among the sub-factors of stress, interpersonal stress and academic stress has a negative effect. In addition, friendship support had a statistically significant effect on social support, and resilience subscale was life satisfaction and cause analysis ability. In addition, stress was found to be partly mediated in the relationship between social support and college life adjustment. Based on this study, the strategies for lowering the stress, improving the resilience of the university students in order to improve the college life adaptation were provided.

Influence of SNS Addiction Tendency on Nursing Student's Adjustment of University Life (간호대학생의 SNS 중독 경향성이 대학 생활 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the influence of social network site (SNS) addiction on the ability of nursing students to adjust to university life and to generate the basic data to develop programs that could improve this ability. The data was collected from questionnaires that were filled out by 255 nursing students in two universities located in Jeollanam-do and Gyeonggi-do from May 16, 2020 to May 20, 2020. The data was analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 program (frequency, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression). The mean scores of SNS addiction and adjustment to university life were 2.16±0.54 (range:1-5) and 3.13±0.39 (range:1-5) respectively. SNS addiction accounts for 27% of the variance in adjustment to university life. The study concluded that SNS addiction negatively affects adjustment to university life among nursing students. To ensure better adjustment a program should be developed to treat SNS addiction early. Also, a study will have to be conducted to determine the time when tendency toward SNS addiction becomes apparent, to initiate treatment.

Acculturation, Psychological and School Adjustment of Early Study-Abroad Adolescents in Terms of Stress Coping Strategy

  • The goal of this study was to examine the correlations of stress coping strategies and cultural, psychological and school adjustment among Korean early study-abroad adolescents in the United States. Participants were 437 Korean early study-abroad adolescents aged 15 to 18 years old enrolled in summer language institutes located in Seoul and Gyeonggido, South Korea. The survey consisted of questionnaires relating to coping strategies and, cultural, psychological and school adjustments. The data was collected during the break time of summer language institute classes. Results showed that these adolescents' problem focused and social support coping strategies were positively related with acculturation, psychological adjustment and school adjustment, and emotion focused coping strategy was positively related to satisfaction of life.

  • Objectives This study is designed to evaluate the relationship between school life maladjustment and oriental medicine by diagnostic procedure based on the symptoms of weak children. Methods The questionnaire administrated to 130 fifth grade elementary school students in Daejeon was analyzed. Results 1. Comparing and analyzing different sexes in terms of school adjustment grades, girls were more adaptable than boys. 2. Weak score didn't show significant difference in sex and in the school adjustment 3. Based on the relationship between a group normal children and a group of children with weak lung, normal children group was more adaptable than group of children with weak lung. Conclusions School life maladjustment should be investigated as a new field of oriental medical treatment and further study needs to be done.

Housing Adjustment Behaviors of Korean Elderly Immigrants Living in Affordable Housing (Affordable housing에 거주하는 한인 노인 이민자의 주거적응행태)

  • This study explores the daily life patterns and housing adjustment behaviors of low-income Korean elderly immigrants residing in affordable housing in the Chicago metropolitan area. Utilizing an intercultural perspective, the study focuses on identifying the immigrants' their cultural attributes of daily living and coping responses to residential misfits. These housing adjustment behaviors are classified into five modes consisting of residential mobility, structural adaptation, residential alteration, normative adaptation, and behavioral adaptation. Two-hour in-depth interviews with open-ended questions were conducted with 138 participants from 15 affordable housing complexes. Collected information includes demographic data, immigration experiences and cultural identity, daily life patterns, as well as housing evaluation and housing adjustment behaviors. The study results indicate that many research participants maintained their cultural attributes of daily living accumulated from past experiences (i.e. mostly based upon Korean cultural contexts), but also made adjustments as they complied with their aging body and new living conditions. This also reflects that immigrants' cultural needs are not limited to the use of language and ethnic goods, but are also embedded deeply in their daily life patterns to influence one's uses of the dwellings in a broader sense. All five modes of housing adjustment behaviors were observed with research participants within their residential settings. More importantly, normative and behavioral adaptations along with residential alterations occurred more simultaneously rather than sequentially when the respondents perceived discrepancy between oneself (i.e. including one's attributes, needs, and preferences) and his/her dwelling.

Effect of self-esteem on multicultural acceptability that mediated by job satisfaction and adjustment to military life for Republic of Korea Army officials (군 간부의 자존감이 다문화 수용성에 미치는 영향: 직무만족과 군생활 적응을 매개로)

  • The purpose of this study is to review whether the self-esteem of Republic of Korea army officers and noncommissioned officers affect cultural acceptability and at the same time to determine whether these relationships are mediated by adjustment to military life and job satisfaction. For this purpose, we conducted a survey by random sampling of 580 officers and noncommissioned officers serving in the army units located in Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province. The collected data was analyzed by a structural equation model, including statistical and correlation analysis. As a result of analysis, self-esteem of the military officers and noncommissioned officers appeared to be mediated only by military life adjustment, or to affect the cultural acceptability mediated by the military life and job satisfaction in turn. Therefore, in order to increase the cultural acceptability of military officers and noncommissioned officers, ROK Army should enhance the self-esteem, job satisfaction and adaptability of them.

The Development of College Adjustment Program for Freshmen via Admission Officer System (입학사정관제 신입생을 위한 대학적응교육 프로그램 개발)

  • The primary purpose of this study was to develop a college adjustment program for freshmen through admission officer system that relies less on test scores and on the various talents evaluated by admissions officers. To help these talented students adjust the new life of the university and enhance their gifts, a college adjustment program was developed with their special needs and characteristics. For that, the survey with 57 students and in-depth interviews with 12 students were conducted. The results revealed that the students wanted to learn study skills, self-management, global mind setting, and life vision and goals setting. Most of the students were worried about their grades because they entered the school with their talents and experience in diverse activities not SAT scores. To promote their academic performance, this program consisted of an academic readiness program which complements students' abilities in primary subjects like math, English, and science, and a potential progress program which is peer-group learning communities based on their own interests like global learning communities, creative learning communities, and service-learning communities. This program was suggested in the context of Comprehensive Development Model. To carry out the program systematically, related organizations and colleges should collaborate with each other.
