  • The critical strength of outsourcing system is to enhance the competitive power of the company by applying the centralization of management resources. This strategy has been used in library management and become the general method. The libraries in the U.S. stated to adopt the outsourcing system to organize the information of library works. Those in Korea also commence to use this method later on. The main reason of outsourcing the cataloging and classification works in the library was to reduce the budget; however, result were diverse. The efficiency on performing works was positive while the quality of bibliographic record was not guaranteed. Regardless of various opinions, The National Library of Korea decided to apply the method to cataloging and classification considered as a major work in maintaining library. • The purpose of this study was to propose the improvements for high quality of National Library of Korea (NLK) Subject Headings List which was developed as a subject access tool in 2002. For this study, literature review, case study for subject headings lists of national libraries, and data analysis of headings and relationships were performed. Several problems were found as follows: inconsistency of subject headings descriptions, unclear and unnecessary relationships among headings, inconsistency of hierarchical relationships, lack of currency, incorrectness of classification numbers, duplication of newly requested terms, and assignment of non-preferred and unregistered terms in bibliographic records. Focusing on these problems, modifications of subject headings and bibliographic records, installation and operation of an review committee on subject headings, and supplementation of a manual were suggested to improve NLK Subject Headings List.

  • Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) was first published in 1876. Since its first edition it has been revised, on an average, 6 years, and now it has become the widely used library classification system of which the scheme was translated in various languages. The purpose of this study is to find out the chief causes for the development of the DDC. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: 1. It allows materials to be shelved in a relative location as the collection expands. before the DDC was introduced, libraries used a fixed location for materials in which each item was assigned to a certain location set aside for a subject. 2. It is a practical system. The fact that it has survived many storms in the past hundred years and is still the most widely used classification scheme in the world today attests to its practical value. 3. The pure notation of arabic numerals is universally recognizable. People from any cultural or language background can adapt to the system easily. 4. The use of the decimal system enable infinite expansion and sub-division. And it has adaptability for use in libraries of various size and kinds because of its hierarchically expressive notation which permits varying degrees of inclusiveness and exclusiveness within its decimal structure. 5. The notation is simple and easily understood. The self-evident numerical sequence facilitates filing and shelving. And the mnemonic nature of the notation helps the readers to memorize and recognize the class numbers. 6. The relative index brings together different aspects of the same subject scattered in different disciplines. 7. We can avail of DDC numbers for specific titles easily because of its use by many central bibliographic services. 8. It is being continuously revised by a permanent office established in the library of congress in 1933. This office has been responsible for editing all editions of the DDC since the 16th (1958). And the periodic revision at regular intervals ensures the currentness of the scheme. 9. It has adaptability both for conventional (manual) shelf or classed catalogue analysis and also, through its meaningful nation, for retrieval through mechanization and computerized systems.

  • This article investigates the functions, needs, and developments of the MARC format for classification data. and recommends the development for the KORMARC format for classification data. It ae analyzes the record structure, content designation and the content of it mainly based on USMARC format. Structure and content designation are almost same with those of the bibliographic and authority formats. The data fields divided into functional blocks based on their functions. Record contents of the data in the fixed-length fields include more elements on the classification numbers, including type of number, classification validity, standard or optional number, synthesized number. Variable fields can be grouped into several blocks, inducing those for numbers and codes: for classification numbers and terms; for references and tracings; for notes fields: for index terms fields, and for number building fields. Data in each fields of this format have the same contents with those in other related fields as soon as possible. This article analyzes the content in each data fields in detail.

  • This study analysed work types of Chinese bibliographical records based on FRBR model to identify how many useful data there are in bibliographical records and how much difference in usefulness there is according to themes. For the purposes, the study randomly extracted samples of 2,200 Chinese books with 100 cases of 22 kinds from "Chinese Library Classification" through National Library of China's OPAC, targeting Chinese books collected by the National Library of China to analyse the work types of Chinese bibliographical records and their usefulness in application of the FRBR model according to themes and data types. The results are summarized as follows: Firstly, in applying the FRBR model for Chinese bibliographical records, 18.6% was considered as useful works for which simple work was added to complex work. Secondly, although it is a fact that usefulness is higher as bibliographical relations are more complex, only works by famous people collected in 'Marxism-Leninism'(A) and some classics and modern masterpieces collected in 'Literature'(I) have diverse versions of works such as sequels, revision, reproduction, adaptation, and critical books. However, if criticism, review, explanation and bibliographical introduction are included in specific subjects of 'Military'(E), 'Language and Words'(H), 'Literature'(I) and 'Comprehensive Book'(Z), it was clear that their usefulness is relatively high.

  • One of the fundamental roles of libraries is to provide users with efficient and easy retrieval of materials. Various discussions have been made at domestic and abroad to improve the accessibility of materials by category, user, and collection, and at the center of this is the issue of improving classification and cataloging systems. However, there are few studies in this area dealing with the data accessibility of the DLS catalog, which is a central tool for accessing domestic school library materials. This study started from the appeal of school library users to the difficulty of searching and accessing books, especially literature. This study is an exploratory study that attempts to derive problems by finding the causes of there difficulties from various aspects. To this study, we surveyed and analyzed the current status of school library collections, the data registration of the school library support system DLS, the subject accessibility of catalog records produced through this, and the recognition and opinions of school library professionals. As a result, school library collections were highly concentrated in the literature field, and it was found that there was not enough catalog bibliographic records to provide efficient access to these collections. In addition, it was found to be somewhat lacking through the DLS search function to compensate for this. Surveys of school librarians and librarians have also identified this problem, and a rich topic index and search keyword assignments have been drawn to the majority of opinions as a way to improve access to materials in school library catalogs. As a continuous discussion on this subject, the plan for improving access to school library materials will be more concrete through future user studies and new challenges for bookshelf classification.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze Dongkuksipji's Yeamunji, written by Bae Sang-hyun(裴象鉉) in 1855. Dongkuksipji is a kind of encyclopedia. Dongkuksipji's Yeamunji record 137 books written in Goguryeo, Silla, Goryeo, Joseon and China. Yeamunji has its own classification system which includes 15 different topics. But this classification system emphasizes too much some field, such as Chinese classics of Confucianism. Yeamunji contains information on the period of compilation, author, title, and some bibliographic introductions. Although Dongkuksipji's Yeamunji does not have a perfect system for its contents, it is worthy of notice because it is a large catalogue of ancient books compiled by just one person.

  • This study aims to analyze the properties of the tags used in the fiction genre, the structural aspect of the patterns and the contents of the tags by utilizing LibraryThing, where the tags are assigned in work units of FRBR. A comparative analysis was conducted in terms of the level of association between the descriptive terms in bibliography and LCSH terms. The study also examined the sources of the tags not included in the bibliographic descriptions or LCSHs, what aspects of work they represented, and the terms used as tags in relation to the work. By restricting the study to a single genre, a number of tags that reflected the characteristics of fiction (three elements of the fiction which are theme, plot, style and three elements of the fiction composition which are character, event, setting) were extracted. This study finds out the role of the tag making up the taxonomy and proposes a new direction for the tagging system by demonstrating the possibility of using tags as facets in information organization and retrieval.

  • This article analyzes the record structure, content designation, and the content of UNIMARC, USMARC, and KORMARC formats for authorities, through the comparative investigation, Structure and content designation are almost same with those of the bibliographic formats, being based on those of ISO 2709. The data fields of USMARC and KORMARC are divided into blocks based on the traditional authority card formats, and those of UNIMARC are divided into functional blocks based on the GARE. Record contents of the formers in the fixed-length fields include more elements on the selectioa status and scope of the heading, and those related to the series. And those of the later include more elements for the international exchange. Based on the analysis of the variable fields, it is recommended that KORMARC should include an additional subfield, say $(\blacktriangledown\;j)$ for the processing of the Hanja(Chinese character) data and add the separate classification fields for series.
