A Comparison of web Searching and Library System Searching: Perceived Difficulty, Self-Efficacy, and Effort (웹과 도서관 시스템에서 이용자 정보탐색 비교연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore whether the concept of amount of invested mental effort (AIME) developed in the field of educational psychology can help explain why people put so little effort into online searching. In this experimental study, two information retrieval systems - a web search engine and a university library system - were used to make a comparison. The data were collected from 15 undergraduate students through background questionnaires, think-aloud protocols, search logs, post-search questionnaires, and post-task interviews. The findings indicate that perception of the web's "easy-ness" and high levels of self confidence in searching capability led the subjects to put less effort into web searching than they do into library system searching. In addition, the perceived difficulty of search task influenced the extent of mental effort invested. The AIME proved a useful framework for understanding search behavior and user experience for both web search engines and library systems.

Exploring Older Adults' Experienced Barriers and Emotional Changes in Seeking Health Information (건강정보검색에서 노인이 경험하는 어려움과 감정변화)

  • This study aims to explore older adults' experiences on cognitive and physical barriers and emotional changes of interactions from their health information seeking. Total of 10 older adults aged 65 or more were individually interviewed. The results show that the older adults may experience more difficulty from the perspectives on cognitive and physical barriers. The cognitive barriers are to: 1) know information resource and information search skills, 2) to choose relevant information, and 3) to know information search tools. The physical barriers for them to consider are eyes, hands, legs, and the whole body when accessing health information. In terms of emotion, the older adults express curiosity and negative emotion and at the beginning of the search and then they have more emotional expressions in the middle, and then they express positive emotion at the end of the search. The results suggest that information professionals should consider library as a connection to help them reduce these barriers and stabilize emotional changes.

An Exploratory Study of Developing a Measurement Tool for the Quality of Information Commons (정보공유공간의 품질 측정지표 개발에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a measurement tool for the quality of information commons. Information commons is a physical, technological, social, and intellectual place where library users can experience various educational, research, and cultural activities. It is recently gaining popularity and several libraries have implemented it to help users share knowledge and interact with each other. It also intends to provide a place for collaboration, learning, and rest. Despite its benefits and usefulness, there is no measurement tool explicitly designed for the quality of information commons. This study used in-depth personal interview, compared prior studies, and conducted a pilot study to elicit library users' perceptions on information commons and factors influencing on the perceived quality of information commons. Groups of initial items were emerged through classifying and clustering key concepts in the data. Then, the validity of the items were verified through a pilot study. The findings of this study will be useful for developing more reliable and valid survey measurement tool.

The Use and Understanding of Keyword Searching in SELIS Online Public Access Catalogs (SELIS OPAC에 있어서 키워드탐색의 이용과 이해)

  • It Is the purpose of this research to analyse users' understanding how keyword and boolean search work in SELIS(SEoul Women's University Library and Information System) OPAC. Results of analyses of the subject, SELIS OPAC system processing, are: comprehension percentage of keyword extraction is $67(22.48\%)$ out of total 298 persons, no comprehension is $231(77.52\%)$ understanding of boolean OR In keyword search appears $115(22.48\%)$ out of 297, no understanding does $182(77.52\%)$ : comprehension of boolean AND is $98(33.11\%)$ out of 296, no understanding appears $198(66.89\%)$ understanding of using boolean and symbols is $109(36.49\%)$ out of 285, no understanding is $181(63.51\%)$ which Is lower percentage generally. And in SELIS OPAC system, in Intentional analyses to see any difference in understanding of keyword search between experience of keyword search or no, It shows no difference in interrelation $5\%$ level of significance, but In boolean search it does in interrelation $5\%$ level of significance.

Internee's Assessment of Library Internship Program: Capturing of the Use of LIS Practicum (인턴기관(도서관) 실무자의 인턴쉽 프로그램에 대한 인식진단 사례연구)

  • Inspired by the practice-oriented curriculum in LIS, many colleges have developed Internship program. Researches of internee's attitude or opinion of internship program, which affect students' learning and their cognitive impact, have not been studied. This study measured internee's cognition of internship by surveying thirty-four librarians who had experience of internship instructor in libraries and information centers. The Researcher found several practical problems as well as some implications which can be applied in a meaningful way among LIS professionals.

Roles of Public Libraries in Closing Disparities of Cultural Capital (문화자본 격차 해소를 위한 공공도서관의 역할)

  • It is generally accepted that cultural capital is constructed through cultural environments that facilitate the cultural activities of individuals. Although public libraries foster the cultural environment and support various cultural activities, there is controversy about whether public libraries still affect the formation of cultural capital in the current evolved cultural environment. This research empirically verified the roles of public libraries in the formation of cultural capital by conducting a survey targeting public library users. As a result, public libraries as cultural institutions play an important role in providing opportunities to access and utilize cultural resources and to experience various cultural activities, which are connected to the formation of different types of cultural capital. In addition, public libraries function to close the cultural divide and social disparities by providing equal opportunities to construct cultural capital for community members.

A Study on the Information Usage Behavior of Researchers in the Field of Ocean Science and Technology (해양과학기술 분야 연구자의 정보이용행태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to explain information usage behavior of researchers in the field of ocean science and technology. The study mainly collected primary data for advancement of special library services as well as establishment of personalized information services based on personal characteristics such as age, education level, and area of research. The data collection was conducted for two weeks during January 2014, through a web survey to 348 researchers in national ocean research institutions in South Korea. Total of 115 researchers replied. The analysis showed that the most preferred type of information medium was a scholarly journal. Researchers used more foreign published journals compared to Korean ones, while favoring digital formats rather than printed ones. The top channels for information collection were 'web search' and 'affiliated libraries.' Most pointed out difficulties of data collection were 'lack of variety of digital resources in affiliated libraries' and 'reluctance to use charged information.' Key elements for satisfactory user experience were ranked in the order of 'digital library system,' 'library staff,' and 'library collection' and so on;which proves the close relationship between library service and information usage service satisfaction. The result of an assessment for demands in special libraries showed that 'personalized information search service,' 'project support service,' and 'research direction analysis service' should be implemented in the future.

Continuing Education for the Library and Information Professionals : Present Situation and Need Assessment (문헌정보전문직을 위한 계속교육에 관한 연구 : 현황과 요구분석)

  • To investigate the present states and analyze the need of continuing education, a survey was done to the library and information professionals. Based on the personal membership file of the Korean Library Association, 292 members were selected using $25\%$ systematic sampling method. Questionnaires were mailed to them and $80\%$ returned. Of the total respondents. $90\%$ want to participate continuing education, however only $50\%$have a formal continuing education experience during last 3 years. Informal educational efforts are also weak and show much individual differences. $67\%$ of the libraries encourage continuing education but only $25\%$ of the respondents were provided with time and money for participation. The most favored mode of the continuing education Is one week course specialized In particular topic$(31.1\%)$ or area$(25.5\%)$. New methods, such as CD-ROM. online etc. were also preferred. Respondents regard professional association, society, and the library Information science department of university as desirable leading organization for continuing education. Among the 16 possible topics to be educated, respondents showed substantially higher Interest(more than $50\%$) In 5topics, and there were significant need differences In 7 topics among groups divided by library type.

Librarians' Contribution for Publishing in LIS Journal: In the case of Journal of the Korean Biblia Society for Library and Information Science (사서의 문헌정보학분야 학술논문 출판 활동 현황 - 『한국비블리아학회지』를 중심으로 -)

  • In addition to emphasizing practicality, as in some academic disciplines, LIS is also interested in the research activities and journal publishing of librarians. Despite the high interest, there are few Korean studies on librarian authors' publishing. This study focuses on analyzing the status of librarians' publishing and finding ways to activate their journal publishing. This study analyzed the papers of the librarian authors published from 2014 to 2018 in Journal of the Korean Biblia Society for Library and Information Science and identified the characteristics of librarians who are publishing. As a result, librarians accounted for 15.56% of all authors. However, it is encouraging that the number of librarians' authorship stabilized, and that many librarians are the main authors. Librarians who were energetically publishing were public or school librarians, and academic librarians were slightly behind. There were graduate student librarians who collaborated with the advisor. In order to increase the librarian's publishing, it seemed to be necessary to improve not only the librarian's efforts but also the recognition and assistance of his/her library. Both the librarian and his/her library should be aware of the importance of publishing the journals, and should establish concrete plans such as resilience, compensation, and support. In this way, the librarian's valuable practical experience will be published in research papers and widely shared among researchers and practitioners.

A Study on Evaluation of the Reading Culture Promotion Project and Develpment Direction of Smart Era at the National Library for Children and Young Adults (국립어린이청소년도서관의 독서문화진흥사업 평가와 스마트 시대 발전방향에 대한 연구)

  • This study closely analyzed changes in the educational environment and changes in the needs of children's and young people's reading culture programs, which are directly beneficiaries of the promotion of reading culture as they enter the fourth industrial revolution. It also comprehensively evaluated the reading culture promotion project for children and adolescents promoted by the National Children and Youth Library and proposed a reading culture promotion project that meets the needs of the smart era. This study investigated the cases of various domestic and foreign reading culture promotion projects to divulge trends. The authors invited experts from public libraries and school libraries with experience of the reading culture promotion projects and performed Focus Group Interviews (FGI). The authors evaluated individual reading culture program based on the PDCA method (Plan, Do, Check, Act). Based on the data obtained through case studies and expert evaluations, the development plan of reading culture promotion project and the strategy of promoting new projects to be pursued in the National Children and Youth Library were presented. By gathering the results of the research, 'Interactive e-book making platform production / distribution business', 'Game-type reading program production / distribution business', 'Habruta reading culture dissemination project using backward learning method', 'Youth coding branding "Teen-Start -Up"' were proposed as new services.
