  • A general purpose program for computing 3-D flows has been extended for two-phase flows with topologically complex interfaces. The 3-D interfaces are tracked by employing a coupled level set and volume-of-fluid (CLSVOF) method which not only can calculate an interfacial curvature accurately but also can achieve mass conservation well. The program has been tested through the computations of bubbles rising in a liquid. The numerical results are found to compare well with the results reported in the literature.

  • In level set method, material properties are made to change smoothly across an interface of two materials with different properties by introducing an interpolation or smoothing scheme. So far, the weighted arithmetic mean (WAM) method has been exclusively adopted in level set method, without complete assessment for its validity. We showed here that the weighted harmonic mean (WHM) method for rate constants of various rate processes, including viscosity, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and permittivity, gives much more accurate results than the WAM method. The selection of interpolation scheme is particularly important in multi-phase electrohydrodynamic problems in which driving force for fluid flow is electrical force exerted on the phase interface. Our analysis also showed that WHM method for both electrical conductivity and permittivity gives not only more accurate, but also more physically realistic distribution of electrical force at the interface. Our arguments are confirmed by numerical simulations of drop deformation under DC electric field.

  • This paper presents a topological shape optimization for electromagnetic system using a Level Set method. The optimization is progressed by updating the implicit Level Set function from the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The up-wind scheme is used for numerical implementation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In order to validate the proposed optimization, the core part of a C-core actuator is optimized by three cases using different materials; (single steel), (two steels), and (steel and magnet).

  • In this study, the two-phase incompressible flow in two-dimensional channel considering the effect of surface tension is simulated using an improved level-set method. Quadratic element is used for solving the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations to avoid using an additional pressure equation, and Crank-Nicholson scheme and linear element are used for solving the advection equation of the level set function. Direct approach method using geometric information is implemented instead of the hyperbolic-type partial differential equation for the reinitializing the level set function. The benchmark test case considers various arrays of defomable droplets under different flow conditions in straight channel. The deformation and migration of the droplets are computed and the results are compared very well with the existing studies.

  • In the present study, a parallel Taylor-Galerkin/level set based two-phase flow code was developed using finite element discretization and domain decomposition method based on MPI (Message Passing Interface). The proposed method can be utilized for the analysis of a large scale free surface problem in a complex geometry due to the feature of FEM and domain decomposition method. Four-step fractional step method was used for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and Taylor-Galerkin method was adopted for the discretization of hyperbolic type redistancing and advection equations. A Parallel ILU(0) type preconditioner was chosen to accelerate the convergence of a conjugate gradient type iterative solvers. From the present parallel numerical experiments, it has been shown that the proposed method is applicable to the simulation of large scale free surface flows.

  • Numerical simulations for dendritic growth of crystals are conducted in this study by the level set method. The effect of order of difference is tested for reinitialization error in simple problems and authors founded in case of 1st order of difference that very fine grids have to be used to minimize the error and higher order of difference is desirable to minimize the reinitialization error The 2nd and 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme in time and 3rd and 5th order of WENO schemes with Godunov scheme are applied for space discretization. Numerical results are compared with the analytical theory, phase-field method and other researcher's level set method.

  • In the present work, topology optimization method using adaptive inner-front level set method is presented. In the conventional level set based topology optimization method, there exists an incapability for inner-front creation during optimization process. In this regard, as a new attempt to avoid and to overcome the limitation, an inner-front creation algorithm is proposed. In the inner-front creation algorithm, the strain energy density of a structure along with volume constraint is considered. Especially, to facilitate the inner-front creation process during the optimization process, the inner-front creation map which corresponds to the discrete valued function of strain energy density is constructed. In the evolution of the level set function during the optimization process, the least-squares finite element method (LSFEM) is employed. As an application to shell structures, the lightweight design of doubly curved shell and segmented mirror is carried out.

  • In this study, a three-dimensional least-square, level-set-based two-phase flow code was developed for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems using finite element discretization. The code was validated by solving some benchmark problems. The proposed method was found to provide improved results against other existing methods, by using a coarser mesh. The results of the numerical experiments conducted during the course of this study showed that the proposed method was both robust and accurate for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems. Using a substantially coarse grid, historical results of the dynamic pressure at a selected position corresponded with existing experimental data. The pressure history with a finer grid was similar to that of a coarse grid; however, a fine grid provided higher peak pressures. The present method could be extended to the analysis of a sloshing problem in a complex geometrical configuration using unstructured meshes owing to the features of FEM.

  • Numerical simulation is performed for a microdroplet deposition on the pre-patterned micro-structure. The liquid-air interface is tracked by level set method improved by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The method is further extended to treat the contact angle condition at an immersed solid surface. The present computation of a patterning process using microdroplet ejection demonstrates that the multiphase characteristics between the liquid-gas-solid phases can be used to overcome the patterning error.
