Neuro-inflammation induced by restraint stress causes impairs neurobehavior in mice (스트레스 유발 마우스모델에서 뇌염증 및 신경행동 장애 변화)

  • Background : Behavioral stress has been suggested as one of the significant factors that is able to disrupt physiological systems and cause depression as well as changes in various body systems. The stressful events can alter cognition, learning, memory and emotional responses, resulting in mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Results : We used a restraint stress model to evaluate the alteration of behavior and stress-related blood parameter. The animals were randomly divided into two groups of five animals each group. Furthermore, we assessed the change of body weight to evaluate the locomotor activity as well as status of emotional and anxiety in mice. After 7 days of restraint stress, the body weight had significantly decreased in the restraint stress group compared with the control group. We also observed stress-associated behavioral alterations, as there was a significant decrease in open field and forced swim test, whereas the immobilization time was significantly increased in the stress group compared to the control group. We observed the morphological changes of neuronal death and microglia by immunohistochemistry and western blot. In our study restraint stress did not cause change in neuronal cell density in the frontal cortex and CA1 hippocampus region, but there was a trend for an increased COX-2 and iNOS protein expression and microglia (CD11b) in brain, which is restraint stress. Conclusion : Our study, there were significant alterations observed in the behavioral studies. We found that mice undergoing restraint stress changed behavior, confirming the increased expression of inflammatory factors in the brain.

Concepts of Disaster Prevention Design for Safety in the Future Society

  • In this paper, we propose a pioneering concept of DPD(Disaster Prevention Design) to realize a securable society in the future. Features of danger in the future society are expected to be diverse, abrupt occurring, large scale, and complicated ways. Due to increment of dangers with their features of uncertainty, interactivity, complexity, and accumulation, human-oriented design concept naturally participates in activities to prevent our society against disasters effectively. We presented DPD is an essential design activity in order to cope with dangers expected in the future societies as well as realize securable environments. DPD is also an integrated design aids including preemptive protections, rapid preparing, recovery, and interactive cooperation. We also expect these activities of DPD is effective for generation of new values in the market, satisfaction of social needs, expansion of design industry, and a novel chance for development in the future society. Throughout this paper, we submit various aspects of DPD concepts including definition, classification, scope, necessity, strategy, influencing elements, process, and its principle. We expect these concepts will be the seed and/or basement of DPD research for the future works. For the direction of study for DPD in the future, we emphasize alarm system for preemptive protection rather than recovery strategy for the damage occurred. We also need to research about progressive prevention techniques and convergence with other areas of design. In order to transfer the concept of product design from facility-oriented mechanism to human-oriented one, we should develop new kinds of city basis facilities, public-sense design concepts referred to social weak-party, e-Learning content design preparing disasters, and virtual simulation design etc. On the other hand, we have to establish laws and regulations to force central and/or provincial governments to have these DPD strategies applying their regional properties. Modern design activities are expanding to UI(user interface) content design area overcoming the conventional design concept of product and/or service. In addition, designers are recognized as art directors or life stylists who will change the human life and create the social value. DPD can be divided into prevention design, preparedness design, response design, and recovery design. Five strategies for successful DPD are Precaution-oriented, Human-oriented, Sense-oriented, Legislation, and Environment Friendly Strategies.

An Analysis of the Communication Patterns according to the Mathematical Problem Types in Small Group (소집단 문제해결 학습에서 수학 문제 유형에 따른 의사소통의 패턴 분석)

  • In the 21C information-based society, there is an increasing demand for emphasizing communication in mathematics education. Therefore the purpose of this study was to research how properties of communication among small group members varied by mathematical problem types. 8 fourth-graders with different academic achievements in a classroom were divided into two heterogenous small groups, four children in each group, in order to carry out a descriptive and interpretive case study. 4 types of problems were developed in the concepts and the operations of fractions and decimals. Each group solved four types of problems five times, the process of which was recorded and copied by a camcorder for analysis, among with personal and group activity journals and the researcher's observations. The following results have been drawn from this study. First, students showed simple mathematical communication in conceptual or procedural problems which require the low level of cognitive demand. However, they made high participation in mathematical communication for atypical problems. Second, even participation by group members was found for all of types of problems. However, there was active communication in the form of error revision and complementation in atypical problems. Third, natural or receptive agreement types with the mathematical agreement process were mainly found for conceptual or procedural problems. But there were various types of agreement, including receptive, disputable, and refined agreement in atypical problems.

  • Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is a serine protease catalyzing the proteolytic conversion of plasminogen into plasmin, which is involved in thrombolysis. During last two decades, the role of tPA in brain physiology and pathology has been extensively investigated. tPA is expressed in brain regions such as cortex, hippocampus, amygdala and cerebellum, and major neural cell types such as neuron, astrocyte, microglia and endothelial cells express tPA in basal status. After strong neural stimulation such as seizure, tPA behaves as an immediate early gene increasing the expression level within an hour. Neural activity and/or postsynaptic stimulation increased the release of tPA from axonal terminal and presumably from dendritic compartment. Neuronal tPA regulates plastic changes in neuronal function and structure mediating key neurologic processes such as visual cortex plasticity, seizure spreading, cerebellar motor learning, long term potentiation and addictive or withdrawal behavior after morphine discontinuance. In addition to these physiological roles, tPA mediates excitotoxicity leading to the neurodegeneration in several pathological conditions including ischemic stroke. Increasing amount of evidence also suggest the role of tPA in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis even though beneficial effects was also reported in case of Alzheimer's disease based on the observation of tPA-induced degradation of $A{\beta}$ aggregates. Target proteins of tPA action include extracellular matrix protein laminin, proteoglycans and NMDA receptor. In addition, several receptors (or binding partners) for tPA has been reported such as low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP) and annexin II, even though intracellular signaling mechanism underlying tPA action is not clear yet. Interestingly, the action of tPA comprises both proteolytic and non-proteolytic mechanism. In case of microglial activation, tPA showed non-proteolytic cytokine-like function. The search for exact target proteins and receptor molecules for tPA along with the identification of the mechanism regulating tPA expression and release in the nervous system will enable us to better understand several key neurological processes like teaming and memory as well as to obtain therapeutic tools against neurodegenerative diseases.

5-year-old Nuri Course Teacher's Guidebook on Multimedia Content Use of Early Childhood Teachers in Flash (5세 누리과정 교사용 지도서의 멀티미디어 콘텐츠 중 플래시에 대한 유아교사의 활용도)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual use and satisfaction of early childhood teachers in the multimedia contents of the 5-year-old grade Nuri course teacher's guidebook and to provide basic data that should be developed in order to develop contents to help teaching and learning in the future. The subjects of this study were 144 early childhood teachers in kindergartens and day care centers in Busan, and collected data through questionnaires on recognition and implementation of flash among 5-year-old multimedia contents. The collected data were analyzed by frequency and percentage using SPSS 18.0 program. The results of the study were as follows: First, the early childhood teachers were satisfied with 5-year-old multimedia contents. Second, in the actual field, multimedia contents were used relatively low, and among them, the use of early childhood teachers for flash was more than half of all respondents. Third, the utilization and satisfaction according to the activity area and the life topic of the group were the most used in the fairy tale, the concurrent, the play and the story sharing, and it is mostly used in Korea and spring summer autumn winter by teachers.

A Study on Activistic Construction of Number Concept in the Children at the Beginning of School Age (학령 초의 활동주의적 수 개념 구성에 관한 연구)

  • Mathematics education starts from learning the concept of number. How the children at the beginning of school age learn the concept of natural number is therefore important for their future mathematics education. Since ancient Greek period, the concept of natural number has reflected various mathematical-philosophical points of view at each period and has been discussed ceaselessly. The concept of natural number is hard to define. Since 19th century, it has also been widely discussed in psychology and education on how to teach the concept of natural number to the children at the beginning of school age. Most of the works, however, were focused on limited aspects of natural number concept. This study aims to show the best way to teach the children at the beginning of school age the various aspects of natural number concept based on activistic perspective, which played a crucial role in modern mathematics education. With this purpose, I investigated the theory of the activistic construction of knowledge and the construction of natural number concept through activity, and activistic approaches about instruction in natural number concept made by Kant, Dewey, Piaget, Davydov and Freudenthal. In addition, I also discussed various aspects of natural number concept in historical and mathematical-philosophical points of view. Based on this investigation, I tried to find out existing problems in instructing natural number to primary school children in the 7th National Curriculum and aimed to provide a new solution to improve present problems based on activistic approaches. And based on activistic perspective, I conducted an experiment using Cuisenaire colour rods and showed that even the children at the beginning of school age can acquire the various aspects of natural number concept efficiently. To sum up, in this thesis, I analyzed epistemological background on activistic construction of natural number concept and presented activistic approach method to teach various aspects of natural number concept to the children at the beginning of school age based on activism.

The Development of a Technology.Home Economics Teacher-Training Program (기술.가정과 교사 교육 프로그램 개발)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a teacher-training program to improve the Technology Home Economics teacher's educational activity effects. To accomplish this goal, this study developed a training program for the Technology Home Economics teacher through the literature study and the research. The conclusion drawn from this study is as follows: First, it needs to develop a systematic teacher training program to raise the professionalism related to the Technology Home Economics teacher's instruction. Second, the developed program for the Technology Home Economics teacher organizes the 46 subjects and 121 educational contents, and this educational program is worthwhile to be facilitated when a teacher-training institution like the Ministry of Eduction, Science and Technology, local education offices and universities organizes a teacher-training program. Third, as the result analyzing teachers' training demands about the educational contents of a Technology Home Economics teacher-training program, it was appeared that the most demand was 'development of professional activities for the Technology Home Economics teacher', and following demands were the 'production of various evaluation tools', the 'effectively epilogue strategy', and the 'technology to increase the learning motivation' in order. Therefore a training program for the Technology Home Economics teacher should deal these educational contents importantly, and a future teacher-training program developer need to refer to them.

Motor Imagery Brain Signal Analysis for EEG-based Mouse Control (뇌전도 기반 마우스 제어를 위한 동작 상상 뇌 신호 분석)

  • In this paper, we studied the brain-computer interface (BCI). BCIs help severely disabled people to control external devices by analyzing their brain signals evoked from motor imageries. The findings in the field of neurophysiology revealed that the power of $\beta$(14-26 Hz) and $\mu$(8-12 Hz) rhythms decreases or increases in synchrony of the underlying neuronal populations in the sensorymotor cortex when people imagine the movement of their body parts. These are called Event-Related Desynchronization / Synchronization (ERD/ERS), respectively. We implemented a BCI-based mouse interface system which enabled subjects to control a computer mouse cursor into four different directions (e.g., up, down, left, and right) by analyzing brain signal patterns online. Tongue, foot, left-hand, and right-hand motor imageries were utilized to stimulate a human brain. We used a non-invasive EEG which records brain's spontaneous electrical activity over a short period of time by placing electrodes on the scalp. Because of the nature of the EEG signals, i.e., low amplitude and vulnerability to artifacts and noise, it is hard to analyze and classify brain signals measured by EEG directly. In order to overcome these obstacles, we applied statistical machine-learning techniques. We could achieve high performance in the classification of four motor imageries by employing Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) which transformed input EEG signals into a new coordinate system making the variances among different motor imagery signals maximized for easy classification. From the inspection of the topographies of the results, we could also confirm ERD/ERS appeared at different brain areas for different motor imageries showing the correspondence with the anatomical and neurophysiological knowledge.

Variables that Affect the Satisfaction of Brazilian Women with External Breast Prostheses after Mastectomy

  • Background: : In 2012, the breast cancer estimate worldwide stood at 1.67 million new cases, these accounting for 25% of all types of cancer diagnosed in women. For 2014, 57,120 new cases are expected, with a risk estimated at 56.1 cases for every 100,000 women. The objective of this study was to analyze the satisfaction regarding the use of external breast prostheses by women undergoing mastectomy. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 76 women who used an external breast prosthesis (EBP), registered in the services of the Cuiaba Center for Comprehensive Rehabilitation, Mato Grosso, Brazil, from 2009 to 2012. Data were collected from the records of women who had requested the opening of a process of external breast prosthesis concession. Results: Satisfaction with the EBP was identified in 56.6% of the women. Those satisfied with the EBP reported that its weight was not annoying (p<0.01). Although the women felt body sensations of stitches, pains, pulling, dormancy and phantom limb, they are satisfied with the EBP. The variable related to the displacement of the breast prosthesis during activity of everyday life has demonstrated that even though the women have reported the possibility of displacements, they are satisfied with the EBP. The satisfaction with the use of external breast prosthesis did not affect the sexuality of the women with mastectomy. Conclusions: Learning the specificities of the EBP, taking into consideration the satisfaction of its use, allows the rehabilitation team, by listening to their clientele more attentively, following up this woman throughout her life journey, supporting and guiding the best way of use, with an eye to her personal, emotional and social life, as well as to her self-esteem.

Intelligence Robot Contents for Early Childhood Education Settings (유아교육 기관용 지능형 로봇의 '우리반' 콘텐츠 개발)

  • The purpose of this research is to design and develop teacher assistant contents 'My Class' for an intelligent robot iRobiQ, using in early childhood educational setting. After observing daily activities and correspondence role of teachers in educational settings, we selected the robots' target contents as 6 main functions (Attendance, Activity, Gallery, Learning, Role Calling, and Timer). We designed the contents according to the PLU (Player-Learner-User) model which suggests importance of entertainment, education, and enabling features to meet player, learner, and user requirements. We also considered 'emotional' features to satisfy 'companion' requirements. The developed contents in this study was deployed in kindergarten classrooms consisting of five-years-old for 4 weeks to see how they response and use the contents. We found that both teachers and children were likely to show positive responses to the contents. Especially, young children responded to the entertainment and emotional features more actively than to the other features. And they continually explored for something new inside the contents. Finally, this paper discusses what should be considered to develop more useful teacher assistant contents for iRobiQ.
