Labyrinth Seal Design Considering Leakage Flow Rate and Rotordynamic Performance (누설유량과 회전체동역학적 성능을 고려한 래버린스 씰 설계)

  • This study proposes a procedure for designing a labyrinth seal that meets both leakage flow rate and rotordynamic performance criteria (effective damping, amplification factor, separation margin, logarithmic decrement, and vibration amplitude). The seal is modeled using a one control volume (1CV) bulk flow approach to predict the leakage flow rate and rotordynamic coefficients. The rotating shaft is modeled with the finite element (FE) method and is assumed to be supported by two linearized bearings. Geometry, material and operating conditions of the rotating shaft, and the supporting characteristics of the bearings were fixed. A single labyrinth seal is placed at the center of the rotor, and the linearized dynamic coefficients predicted by the seal numerical model are inserted as linear springs and dampers at the seal position. Seal designs that satisfy both leakage and rotordynamic performance are searched by modifying five seal design parameters using the multi-grid method. The five design parameters include pre-swirl ratio, number of teeth, tooth pitch, tooth height and tooth tip width. In total, 12500 seal models are examined and the optimal seal design is selected. Finally, normalization was performed to select the optimal labyrinth seal designs that satisfy the system performance requirements.

Flow Characteristics of Wake Flow with Relation to a Tip Leakage Vortex at Different Flow Rates in an Axial Flow Fan (유량에 따른 축류홴의 익단누설와류 및 후류 특성)

  • The flow characteristics in the blade passage and in the wake region of a low speed axial flow fan have been investigated by experimental analysis using a rotating hot-wire sensor for design and off-design operating conditions. The results show that the tip leakage vortex is moved upstream when flow rate is decreased, thus disturbing the formation of wake flow near the rotor tip. The tip leakage vortex interfaces with blade pressure surface, and results in high velocity fluctuation near the pressure surface. From axial velocity distributions downstream of the fan rotor, large axial velocity decay near the rotor tip is observed at near stall condition, which results in large blockage compared to that at the design condition. Although the wake flow downstream of the rotor blade is clearly measured at all operating conditions, the trough of the high velocity fluctuation due to Karmann vortex street in the wake flow is mainly observed at a higher flow condition than the design flow rate.

  • Unsteady nature of a tip leakage vortex in an axial flow fan operating at a design and off-design operating conditions has been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation in a blade passage with a rotating hotwire probe sensor. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor were also introduced to obtain the cross-correlation coefficient between the two sensors located in the vortical flow as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the vortical flow structure near the rotor tip can be clearly observed at the quasi-orthogonal planes to a tip leakage vortex. The leakage vortex is enlarged as the flow rate is decreased, thus resulting in the high blockage to main flow. The spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region at higher flow rates than the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition.

  • Three-dimensional vortical flow and separated flow topology near the casing wall in an axial flow fan having two different tip clearances have been investigated by a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow simulation. The simulation shows that the tip leakage vortex formed close to the leading edge of the blade tip on suction side grows in the streamwise direction. On the casing wall, a separation line is formed upstream of the leakage vortex center due to the interference between the leakage vortex and main flow. The reverse flow is observed between the separation line and the attachment line generated downstream of the trailing edge, and increased with enlarging tip clearance. The patterns of a leakage velocity vector including a leakage flow rate are also analyzed according to two tip clearances. It is noted that the understanding of the distribution of a limiting streamline on the casing wall is very important to grasp the characteristics of the vortical flow in the axial flow fan.

  • An inter-propellant seal (IPS) for high thrust turbopump is designed. With given operating conditions and requirements, the inter-propellant seal is designed to satisfy the leakage characteristics which is less than 0.1% of normal flow rate of pumps. A numerical analysis is developed to predict the leakage flow rate. The results show that the maximum leakage of LOX and kerosene are less than 0.1% of normal flow rate of pumps, respectively. Based on the numerical analysis results, the detail of IPS is performed. Finally a prototype of IPS is manufactured to perform sets of performance tests in the near future.

From the relative velocity distributions near the rotor tip, large axial velocity decay is observed at near stall condition, which results in large blockage compared to that at the design condition. Througout the flow measurements using a quasi-orthogonal measuring points to the tip leakage vortex, it is noted that the radial position of the tip leakage vortex is distributed between 94 and 96 percent span for all flow conditions. High spectrum density due to the large fluctuation of the tip leakage vortex is observed near the blade suction surface below the frequency of 1000 Hz at near stall condition.

  • A fuel cell vehicle has the hydrogen detection sensors for checking the hydrogen leakage because it use hydrogen for its fuel and can't use a odorant to protect the fuel cell stack. To verify the hydrogen safety of leakage we select the high possible leak points of fittings in hydrogen storage system and test the leaking behavior at them. The hydrogen leakage flow rate is 10, 40, 118 NL/min and the criterion for maximum hydrogen leakage is based on allowing an equivalent release of combustion energy as permitted by gasoline vehicles in FMVSS301. There are total 18EA hydrogen leakage detection sensors installed in test system. we acquire the hydrogen leakage detection time and determine the ranking. Hydrogen leakage detection time decrease when hydrogen leakage flow rate increase. The minimum hydrogen leakage detection time is about 3 seconds when the flow rate is 118NL/min. In this study, we optimize hydrogen sensor position in fuel cell vehicle and verify the hydrogen leakage safety because there is no inflow inside the vehicle.

  • This study investigates the pressure leakage characteristics of a desiccant rotor with a brush-type air seal. Through a pressure leakage experiment, a correlation equation for the leakage air flow rate is obtained as a function of the air seal area and pressure difference. Using this equation, an air leakage model for the desiccant rotor is developed. By comparing simulation results with the experimental results for the desiccant rotor, the accuracy of the air leakage model is demonstrated. A performance test of a desiccant rotor with various air flow rates is carried out. Using the air leakage model, the effective mass flow rate and air leakage rate are found. In addition, the characteristics of the air leakage are analyzed for a desiccant cooling system using the developed air leakage model.

  • Influence of Velocity and Temperature on Streaming Electrification of Insulating Oil is investigated by injection method. Leakage current is increased slightly with increasing temperature in the temperature range 20 to $80^{\circ}C$ at low flow rate, however, it show a peak in the temperature 40 to $60^{\circ}C$ at high flow rate. Leakage current is also increased linearly with increasing flow rate in the flow rate range 1 - 31/min but thereafter, it is increased abruptly with increasing flow rate.

  • A numerical method of calculating the performance of a scroll compressor for refrigerant R-22 and R-134a is presented in this paper. A series of involute curves are employed for the scroll wrap design and the compression volume is investigated geometrically. The radial leakage flow rate through tip clearance is calculated by the two-dimensional compressible flow. On the basis of the results, quasi one-dimensional leakage modeling can be applied to the performance analysis of a scroll compressor, more effectively. Furthermore, the heat transfer effect between scroll wrap and working fluid in compression chamber is considered for the performance analysis. As the results of this study, the effects of the radial and tangential leakage flow rate and heat transfer on the scroll compressor performance are derived precisely. These results may provide the guideline for the design and development of a real scroll compressor.
