  • The present study proposes a theoretical model for predicting the matrix crack density growth of each layer in composite laminates subjected to thermo-mechanical loads. Each layer with matrix cracks is treated as an equivalent continuum of degraded elastic stiffnesses which are functions of the matrix crack density in each slyer. The energy release rate as a function of the degraded elastic stiffnesses is then calculated for each layer as functions of thermo-mechanical loads externally applied to the laminate. The matrix crack densities of each layer in general laminates are predicted as functions of the thermo-mechanical loads applied to a number of laminates. Comparisons of the present study with experimental data in the open literatures are also provided.

  • Single-crystal InGaZnO (IGZO) thin films were spontaneously formed as periodic layered structure along the c-axis by thermal treatment at high temperature. when the IGZO superlattice were synthesized by sol-gel method, the effects of preferred growth orientations and the flatness of ZnO buffer layer were investigated. $InGaO_3(ZnO)_2$ superlattice were favorably formed on ZnO buffer layer with single preferred orientation. Futhermore, it showed relatively high Seebeck coefficient and power factor.

  • We have developed a laser molecular beam epitaxy system for the layer-by-layer growth of oxide thin films. Using this system, we could grow and control oxide thin films of LaAlO$_3$in a molecular layer epitaxy mode on the atomically flat SrTiO$_3$ substrate with a LaAlO$_3$single crystal target. Very clear RHEED oscillations were observed during to growth of a LaAlO$_3$ film for a long period under the optimized conditions of substrate temperature at $650^{\circ}C$, oxygen pressure at 1$\times$10\ulcorner torr, and an incident laser fluence of 4.6J/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The height of mono-layer-LaAlO$_3$ film grown during one period of RHEED intensity oscillation was 3.8$\AA$.

  • In this paper, we made three kinds of porous silicon samples (single layer, distributed Bragg reflector, and microcavity) by electrochemical etching p-type silicon substrate. And then, we investigated their reflectance spectrum properties. We found that the number of fringe patterns and the maximum reflectivity of porous silicon multilayer increased compared with a porous silicon sinlge layer. In addition, we can observe that the DBR (distributed Bragg reflector) porous silicon has a full-width at half-maximum about 33 nm which is narrower than the porous silicon single layer and porous silicon microcavity.

  • In order to increase perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of magnetic layer and prepare magnetic recording layer with a good quality by epitaxial growth between magnetic layer and, we prepared Co$\_$77/Cr$\_$20/Ta$_3$/Si doublelayer for perpendicular magnetic recording media which was promoted as next generation recording media on slide glass substrate. The thickness of magnetic layer and Underlayer were varied from 20 to 100 nm and 5 to 100 m, respectively. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the CoCrTa/Si film were examined with XRD and AFM. Prepared thin films showed improvement of dispersion angle of c-axis orientation Δ$\theta$$\_$50/ caused by inserting amorphous Si underlayer.

  • The conducting polymer thin films were deposited using the gas phase method which known as molecular layer deposition (MLD). Terephthalaldehyde (TPA) and p-phenylenediamine (PD) were used as monomers to deposit conducting polymer. Self-terminating nature of TPA and PD reaction were demonstrated by growth rate saturation versus precursors dosing time. Infrared spectroscopic and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to determine the chemical composition and state of conducting polymer thin films. Layer by layer growth and polymerization of thin films can be showed by shifting of absorption edge using UV-VIS spectroscopy. This conducting polymer fabricated by using MLD method gives the opportunity to develop new hybrid materials by combining inorganic materials in nanoscale.

  • The organic-inorganic hybrid polymer thin films were deposited using the gas phase method which known as molecular layer deposition (MLD). Titaniumchloride (TiCl4) and 1,4-phenylenediamine (PD) were used as monomers to deposit hybrid polymer. Self-terminating nature of TiCl4 and PD reaction were demonstrated by growth rate saturation versus precursors dosing time. Infrared spectroscopic and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to determine the chemical composition and state of hybrid polymer thin films. Layer by layer growth was showed by increasing UV-VIS absorption peak of hybrid polymer thin films.

  • The mechanical properties of aluminized steel were investigated after the JIS SB 41 plates were dipped in molten aluminum bath. (1) The growth rate of iron-aluminum alloy layer was fast in early stage of alumizing, and then gradually decreased with increasing time. However, over the time period above 10 minutes the growth of alloy layer did not occur. (2) The constituent of alloy layer formed on the steel surface was identified to be intermetallic compound of $Fe_2\;Al_5$. (3) The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of aluminized steel showed a nearly constant value over all thickness below about 0.15 mm. However, both properties decreased rapidly in showed a nearly constant value over all thickness above about 0.20 mm. (4) In case of aluminized steel with greater thickness, crack was formed below yield point of base metal, which is considered to be attributed to the alloy layer failure.

  • Initial growth mode of Nb on Cu(100) is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory. Nb/Cu is immiscible at room temperature, but isolated Nb atoms are expected to be incorporated up to the second layer by DFT. STM shows that Nb atoms mix with Cu atoms in the first layer at room temperature and diffuse into the second layer upon annealing. In the second layer, Nb/induced features are preferentially found at step edges and appear as bright dots surrounded by dark rings. Details of comparison between experiment and theory will be discussed.

  • Atomic layer deposition (ALD) and molecular layer deposition (MLD) are based on sequential, self-limiting surface reactions that produce atomic layer controlled and conformal thin film growth. ALD can deposit inorganic films and MLD can deposit films containing organics. ALD and MLD can be used together to fabricate a wide range of hybrid organic-inorganic alloy films. The relative fraction of inorganic and organic constituents can be defined by controlling the ratio of the ALD and MLD reaction cycles used to grow the film. These hybrid films can be tuned to obtain desirable mechanical, electrical and optical properties. This talk will focus on the growth and properties of metal alkoxide films grown using metal precursors and various organic alcohols that are known as "metalcones". The talk will highlight the tunable mechanical properties of alucone alloys grown using Al2O3 ALD and alucone MLD and the tunable electrical conductivity of zincone alloys grown using ZnO ALD and zincone MLD with DEZ and hydroquinone as the reactants.
